  1. I learned from 2 proper oldschool engineers. The first was my boss the second a guy he contracted who i learned all the good tricks from. A bench grinder with a fine stone is a must i use the side of the stone, eyeball the bit parallel with the stone using a scooping motion commit flip it over usually 2 dabs its bang on. You'll get to know when the helix of the drill is resting on your finger right and time it takes to put an edge back on. Ideally you want to put fuck all heat into it bit of water handy helps. Once a drill bit is thrashed and turned blue drilling holes it wont hold an edge long.
  2. Ive been looking forward to you getting back to this....... and eagerly await you finding a place where a Go-Ped part fits perfectly.
  3. It runs it sounds ok isn't terribly loud but something isnt quite right i think i may have filled the carby with crap. Again motivation is gone for today time to clean up and leave it alone for a bit will attack it again another day.
  4. Almost done will fit a little pod filter to the factory Mikuni and i think its done with a small straight pipe ill see how noisy it is as the factory muffler is poked!
  5. Ive also flushed out the black but not to bad oil will fill it with penrites finest leftovers from my last oil change and call the engine ready for action. Now i need to order a clutch then can get onto mounting the engine properly l, going to stick it through the chassis so its 50mm lower minus the fuel tank itll be 150mm lower down leaving room for a seat. I dont want it too top heavy.
  6. My son told me the yellow is yuck. Haha i agree so now its gun metal grey and looks rather spiffy.
  7. Now i know its going to work time to give the well greasy neglected motor a birthday, been a hydraulic pump thats run mainly in dusty conditions it had thick coating of muck oven cleaner and a waterblast sorted it.
  8. Had an interesting conversation with my spine surgeon around what the torque settings are for the hardware he fitted during my spinal fusion....... Said no one had ever asked, i asked again he kinda went pale and admitted they were "pretty tight" one more thing to worry about, he had me on 3 monthly xrays after one shifted during a big sneeze.
  9. On upside it has a 1 piece axle again a sprocket carrier i can fit any sprocket i need too. The axle was the one thing i wanted to tick off today before committing to anything else. Its going to need the engine sunk far lower and the fuel tank moved to get a seat on it though fortunately ive got a new 1.5 litre go ped tank sitting around that will solve one problem and steel to make the engine mounts...... but im out of energy for today so thats a wrap.
  10. I think a 10t may just be bearable. I may of sat on this and ridden it up road to confirm..... at a fast idle it gets along at a fast walk not terrifying but could be better.
  11. Yup will confirm you are right. To be sure i did a direct drive stationary load test using a 13t top sprocket.
  12. Sprocket arrived its about as big as i can go without it being too close to the ground. If i stick with 420 chain i could hypothetically stick my V-twin on for when i want i dont know....... tow a trailer or pull out trees. I will get some go kart wheels on eventually but these will do till they burst, i know my son will do his best to kill them anyway.
  13. Wrap some copper wire around in the groove.... sounds dodgy cos it is. Is there the possibility of a big single cylinder Honda GX set of rings fitting? At least their easy to obtain.
  14. Yeah i was hoping i could use it in some way whether as a sprocket or disc brake carrier. Will get a better idea if i can indeed use it once it arrives nonetheless im sure parts of it can go on, im keen to get it Mobile asap as my motivation to finish things kicks in as soon as i get something to move under its own power. Once it moves i can refine it with my boy hes results driven too.
  15. The hoarding of parts begins LT50 sprocket and carrier for $20 will do. Will buy a clutch when i know what chain pitch im working with.
  16. You going to run it direct drive to the tyre or use a centrifugal clutch? I really need to build something 2 stroke as they seem to work a treat on your projects.
  17. I might use the carby off my v-twin its choking the twin but would be a huge upgrade on this if i can get it to not overfuel by changing jets etc. Finding same issue with the on off throttle with my Robin carby it wont get to an idle as it is but happy anywhere between around 2k rpm and 4k+. Probably manufactured without any intention of going under 2000rpm. My little 2.5hp motors carb had no provision to idle. I bunged a weedeater one on it which cured it.
  18. I like it should fit in my car It does fit on my roof racks nicely as at is.
  19. Im totally riding this to get the milk and bread..... plan is remove tank from top of motor to somewhere else and chuck a seat over the top of engine to get looking a bit more um low key. Should be able to get the seat a good 100mm lower so might be a bit more stable.
  20. pretty meaty steering sutup might think about adding some shocks and springs has a wobble bar kind of arrangement so there is some articulation.
  21. My son spent a few hours chipping off the battery trays they were pretty flaky but are pretty thick steel so came more than usable for the engines mounting. I whipped the seat pole off and sat the engine in a far better spot. Some arse has cut the axle in 2 so I'll have to make a sleeve up to join it back together, i should be able use it to mount the disc brake and sprocket to so will be a win once finished.
  22. Cool idea no doubt once it is moving an idea will come to me $300us is a bit over budget Need a fibreglass vw combi body maybe?
  23. I must resist the urge to encourage helping make this dangerous..... my son isn't much of a speed demon so 5hp will get the job done he is keen on pvc sleeves on the rear tyres though. That to me is promising.
