  1. Another ace day on the road. Had lunch with @vivaspeed and Maria in Oamaru. We're currently in Twizel which for some reason has two 4 squares about 50M apart. No issues to report, did hit a massive lump in the road just out of Ranfurly but I can't see any major damage.

  2. Mysterious noises and happenings from the “almost world famous in NZ” sr2 man-cave late at night…… First attempt at offering up the chassis to the body…. Note the use of the appropriate Worksafe NZ approved safety footwear… It was very apparent the new cross member and the front driveshaft loop were going to hit each other. Yes crazy as it sounds in the 30’s most gearboxes had a flange on the gearbox output shaft and the spline was incorporated into the driveshaft – in the words of Jeremy Clarkson “what could possibly go wrong?” Hence the twin driveshaft loops! I played around with trimming the front loop… … then ended up removing it completely. Finally chassis bolted in place with all new fasteners….and it fits like a glove, (or c*** in a sock for the less salubrious amongst you). …….phew! Touched up the paint… And very, very carefully turned her upright - hopefully for the last time.

  3. Free bit of Weekend spent hanging/ aligning the doors, guards, valence and bumper for good. Pretty OK! Sorry the pics are shit, was in a rush. I’ve had this B310 panel-steel chin spoiler for years and finally bit the bullet and decided to run it. I could have gone Camaro style and had it inset, but the ends made problems when it came to mounting. We made the call to chop it, and the ends practically fit the sweep of the valence after all! just used a random number plate to fill the gap (lol) but it works well so I’ll make a bracket. Not finished but you get the idea. I took the 20 degree angle of the indicator to set the spook angle. And the tyres flipped and lathered in tyre shite to help lift the new-tyre scum and release agent Then, started blocking and bogging. Fucking Joy

  4. On with the pesting. The blue one is a very early production one apparently. This is evidenced by the bushed front wheels and chain steering. Anyway one of the front stub axles is completely wrecked. It's been run dry with a stuffed bush for so long that it almost ate the end off the stub axle. I needed the most basic solution to make it work again. That solution turned out to be turning up a replacement stub, making a crude jig based on the old stub, cut and weld. Sweet. on with the motor swap!

  5. Blast’n’bits Vapour blasted my wipers, photos don’t quite do justice but they are like new..the satin finish means I’d never be able to clean them up nicely without polishing but vape to the rescue again, it’s just a magic process. There some finger prints I need to clean then I’ll clear them

  7. Join this bit to that bit. First, makes some holes. So as not to intrude into the seat space, the front part goes under the floor. To avoid a suspension pivot point, the back part goes above the floor, also to tie into the strut tower.

  8. You are not going to believe this! It was raining on the west coast. So we cannonballed from franz down through haasssttt then across to wanaka. It wasn't raining in wanaka. Now we're in cromwell. Going to fuck around here for a couple days, see jonny @kiwi808 tomorrow and drink some more booze.

  9. What a day! Went to Highlands Park this morning for the smallest Toyota fest I've ever seen. Then went to look at old gold mining shit. Then meet up with @kiwi808 for a guided tour. Which ended at a wine tasting. Thanks heaps Jonny and Jo for spending your afternoon looking after us. Tomorrow we're going to hang out in graveyards.

  11. so after work today I got the fuel lines fixed to the shell and the fuel feed and return fubber hose parts done by the fuel tank.... I was about to start looking at making heat shelds ....... and then much like the sound of the ice cream van to my girls...... I heard the sliding door of a courier....and in her hands was the trigger wheel I've been waiting for ..... so I stopped what I was doing and had a look to see if it will fit and not hit on anything.......pretty fucking sweet. found some washers to center it on the idler pulley bolt.. had to move one sensor out... and one sensor in (that also needed the bracket to be cut out so I can use lock nut). I will be able to tack it on ....on the inside edge. but all in all I'm happy with that looks like it will work .... so I can look at getting it all tacked up and on the motor.

  12. Cut new gasket from a manila folder and ready to go. Whole lot is now assembled on the bench, was a bit of dicking around setting the axle float with limited shims. Ended up blocksanding one of the thicker ones to get everything right. Now to get the ute into work and fit everything up.

  13. Been parts hoarding for this, got the work rims as part of deal on the 1200, been just running down the haltech website cause I'm lazy and don't really know what I need. Got a wb2 wide band controller thing which should do two oxygen sensors And a Bosch type dual channel ignitor, I guess you can use one channel to run the coil, haven't looked too hard at it, but it had to come in from overseas so went for it now. Will most likely bring the car home in a month or so and start to faf about with it.

  14. Not a particularly interesting update I had a bit of time to kill today so I figured I'd get around to making a nicer fuel pump blanking plate for the engine. I took measurements of the spacer from the original pump and made a model in FreeCAD and set the milling machine to work I'm not entirely sold on the logo, maybe I'll sand it off and put a smaller one on it in the future. Either way the plate is an improvement. I also cleaned the seatbelt yesterday as it was starting to get a bit gummy and wouldn't retract properly. I couldn't really believe the amount of gunk that came out of it.

  16. Made a couple catch cans Even made the hose fittings First one for @GuyWithAviators Next one And cause I couldn't find a tap in the size I wanted on a Sunday arvo I made a drain thing, just needs an O-ring Thinking of making some more to sell, the 2 pictured are both 100x100x200mm, I made plate baffles etc and can make them shorter or taller (up to 2.5m ha!), and can either turn and weld on barbs in whatever size needed or supply ready to bolt off the shelf fittings to

  19. few more items the bonnet lock... I did have 3 different types but I now believe I've given them all away......... and the break anyway... sooooo I bent a bit of rod ... welded ut to the wire lock thingy that's really hard to get in and out and even harder when you weld some more length to it. but now it's like an early mk1 escort ...finger in the grill and push it sideways to relate bonnet... I made some braces for the inlet manifold as its pretty heavy and sticks out a bit very good condition 2nd hand shocks .. the aussie diff has eye to pin and the normal cortina eye to eye... so just had to drill a hole out a bit for bigger bolt and space them out a wee bit..... but the front shocks are so nice to swap out .......all you have to do is.....fuck all. I must have fixed the leak in the diff ...turns out the old interwebs may be right... weeeeeereps out the splines on the pinion and some Sealant with fix that just before you put the nut back on....also topped up the lsd fluids. even filled the gearbox with new ool. I bought some random bits from alliexpress finest catalog. a cheap shitty turbo back for a evo . and a random 2.5" down pipe .. and with a small 2.5" bend I managed to make a down pipe. I double wrapped it in heat wrap to cover up my welds and there is so much going on in that area I need to try and keep Temps down. that allowed me to put the wideband o2 sensor in.... and use the tool I made because I have a focus with 2 sensors in real Cunty places....I also had to sane the connector down to fit through a bulkhead hoke and not drill an other also got some coolant hoses in rad to heater , heater to adapter ,adapter to turbo , turbo to EWP sensor housing as well as rad to EWP , EWP to motor in ( also made that to replace factory water pump) , motor out (made that to replace thermostat housing), to EWP temp sensor housing , and then back into the rad. I wrapped the clutch cable in heat wrap and mig wire to help stop it melting and got that in as you can shit is getting tight around this side of the motor now... will look at heat shelds once every thing is in. and my mate is replacing his exhaust on his Valiant wagon with 2.25 so he gave me his old 2.5 system...perfect for what I need and free is a great price

  20. Anyone interested? Still got to clean it up a bit and weld the mounts on, just ran out of argon so called it for right now. Plate and SS wool baffling, 100x100, 190 tall, m16 threaded bosses so those cheap SAAS barbs from SCA will go straight in etc.

  22. Some parts finally showed. Clutch slave, fuel pump and some engine mounts. Ive been hanging out for the engine mounts so i can get this thing back in the van, the old mounts are split in half. Clutch slave is a Lada and X1/9 fitment, and a bit cheaper and more common than the 1500/2300 one. Only difference is the mounting tabs need about 4mm trimmed off them to snug it up against the gearbox a bit more, so hit the brand new parts with a slitting disc Chucked the fuel pump on as well, and timed it up with my special tool Ap.503027, which is needed because there are no factory timing marks on these engines, other than TDC. Good one FIAT. Tried to fire it up in its cradle on the ground but just wouldn't crank fast enough off the jump pack and jumper leads and the starter got pretty hot too. Check out that sweet exhaust A couple weeks later... Ol' mate @EURON8 was in town for the weekend and popped over and gave me a hand to bung it in the hole No photos of during as it was pretty sketchy, - pull out the dizzy so it doesn't get smashed, but forget to set engine to tdc while it easy to access (there is no external crank nut) - jack the front of the van up high enough to slide the engine on its cradle on the creeper under the chassis rail (at least 750mm which is pretty dang high) - once kind lined up yoink the creeper out from under the engine - drop the van back down step by step while sliding/kicking the engine on its cradle forward under the hole as far forward as it will go and centered. - set van on the wood chopping block under the master cylinder box, so the legs of the engine crane can go under the cross member (where it would normally be jacked) - lift engine up into hole with engine crane through drivers door, with only the normal amount of fresh paint scratching - line up the rear transmission mount and then install the fount handed mounts the right way round, - set engine to tdc using a crain wrench on the crank pully, install the dizzy to roundabouts 10 deg btdc, set up a fuel squirty bottle and lash up a temp battery set up to see if we can get it to run. - fiddle with timing and checking spark etc, swap wires,, fix carb leaks etc cranking on and off with a few back fires and pops till starter motor gets real hot. - have lunch - Swap dizzy 180 deg, fires straight up, idles long enough to dial in the timing with the timing light and then runs out of gas in the bowl. Unfortunately it seems the issue is the starter is pretty weak, and got pretty hot again, and the solenoid isnt the best and will 'clutch off' just as the engine seems to cough, so couldnt get it to pop off again, but it did run for about 20 seconds, twice. Starter definitely needs to come out for a check, when i cleaned it up, i just pulled it apart cleaned it and put new brushes in but i think it may need new field winding's or something. Anyway, the first time this thing has made any noise of its own for at least 20 years i would say and it ran well when it ran. Sounded good, and feels really good to be getting closer to nearly driving this old bus. Serendipitously, a fellow Fiat tickler from Chch texted me the other day saying a mate of his has just bought a 125p Ute (!) and will be dropping the good running 1500 out of that to twin cam it, and did i want the engine? Well, yes, yes i do, especially the starter motor (given the twin cam swap will need at a min the bell housing and starter from the engine donor car as its on the opposite side to these earlier engines), so ill probably take my 125p twin cam swapped ute up aloing with my special engine cradle and grab it at some stage. Meanwhile buttoned a few more things up, now has a working gear linkage and plumbed and bled the clutch. Update: charged the battery i was using and the jumper pack overnight, and it fired up after about 20 seconds of cranking and idled till it ran out of gas. Wooooo!

  24. some.more small things done. the radiator sits lower than factory and there is some holes and I've been thinking about making some holes in the front ri help with air flow and cooling..... so but the bullet and did it.. went 50mm holes and around the same length as number plate.. so nit really noticeable but with the chin spoiler good air flow.. I also figured if I push the clamp on the air filter all the way up I can cut about 10mm of that and ut will fit better where I had it with the round lights..... worked a treat. I also made a bit off alloy to help flow air to the intercooler and through the rad.... not to worried about the other side as what does go through the oil cooler goes to the air filter anyway... and number plate bolted on.

  26. Work has been mental as result of the invasion of Ukraine so not too much time on old Doris over the last couple of weeks. Have still made some progress though. It’s getting pretty busy on the drivers side of the engine bay so whipped up a CAD battery to make sure I do have space- don’t really want to go down the path of mounting in the boot. That does limit my battery choice though- I’ll be going with an oddesey of some sort. Alloy hubs arrived and gave me the clearance I needed- might still run some 8mm front spacers maybe. Front end nearly done now. Made some new front brake hard lines too.

  28. More work done during the week, new alloy radiator painted black and fitted- came with a nice spal fan. Have fitted the driveshaft and two hoops, exhaust fitted. New handbrake cable after modifications the routing to work with everything going on under neath now. New struts have gone in, after trying a couple of second hand escort sways bars that have turned out to be fairly rusty I’ve ordered a brand new one that should be here next week. Have to change the female fittings on the brake hardline to fit my braided lines. Rack in now too. Started playing around with the centre console to fit again after changing the trans tunnel. Will be wrapped in black vinyl, I think going green will be too much. Can also see the under dash parcel tray there too. Next big job is wiring, trying to figure out where to put the fuse box and ecu is going to be a bit of a challenge. Mine is a series 1 so hasn’t ever had a fuse box so will be good to update. Brake pedal is at Fraser Cars in AK getting copied and made to cert standards.

  31. Making good progress. Pedal box ordered this week after discussions with LVVTA and my certifier- will need to get the brake pedal remade but otherwise should be good. Seats are in, new seat guides in the trans tunnel made. Just need to make doubler plates for under the floor now. Spent some more time on the engine, new oil pick up, sump and dipstick assembly fitted, new cambelt and water pump fitted and painted the cam cover. Spent some time sanding and polishing the exhaust manifold too. Also added the accessory drive assembly. The Retroford stuff isn’t cheap but you get what you pay for, everything fits nicely and is really well made. Have also seam sealed and painted the floor pan, in hind sight probably should have sprayed it but not too many people will see it.

  33. Have been collecting a few bits for the T2, mainly so the exteriot looks more complete and less like a rolling shell. Managed to snag a few bits off a fella in Nelson whos been in the city scene for a long time. Initially got an original T2 grill and T2 hatch off him that came up with the tallboy. Then the front guards were a pair he sold to another dude, but that fella decided he didn't need them so sold to me. And more recently got a taillight/reverse light set to complete the back end. I brought the Heroes I-speed off @Dudley last year some time, and was bored yesterday so decided it was time to mock them up on the T2. Not gonna lie, looks pretty rad.

  34. Well having just one K11 didn't last very long then. While we were having a bbq and entertaining guests the other night I got a call from @Sanfiddy to say he had just picked up a March and wondered if I'd like to buy it from him. It had failed its wof on rust. Rego is on hold. "hmmmmm? " I hummed as I moved away from the bbq area out of earshot. He then says some magic words... "its a manual and I think it might be a 1.3...oh and its a 2 door. Plus it's got spotlights in the front spoiler" I glance over at Hannah, innocently sitting there unaware of what I was about to do. I'm sure she'll understand I say to myself. I'll tell her later. Maybe in the morning.. "yes - I'll buy it! " So he sent me some photos via messenger and I checked them out like a husband might look at porn when the wife is out shopping* and looked its rego up on carjam for any extra details I might gain. Sadly it was a facelift model but hey- very hard to win them all in this game. Hannah ended up finding out about it before we went to bed and luckily she did not kill me. In fact she was quite excited because we could have some fun tidying it up and hopefully turn in a decent profit when we sell it on to an enthusiast in the making.. So this afternoon we drove out to collect it. We roll up and the first thing I spot is the rear spoiler. Next thing I was happy to confirm after having spotted the potential from the photos I'd been sent was the black dash. I have never seen a black dash on a facelift. In fact the only black dash equipped k11 I have seen so far is our setup we scored. Next thing we spotted was that this little K11 (Meredith?) has sports seats just like what we have fitted into Minky! But these have a even nicer colour and are in great condition, with matching door cards Sadly the rear seat does not split so hannah instantly said no to my idea of swapping the lot over Hannah pays Sanford the money, much like an addict pays for their fix... Meanwhile I scamble about underneth to see what other treats she might be hiding. Rear disc brakes? Sadly no. But hey - uprated rear dampers (well ok- I'm basing this fact purely on them having stickers on them with some branding) and lowering springs (but quite possibly just Makita one ways) which have her sitting at about the same height as Minky. The cars battery was dead so we brought along a spare we'd kept from Molly and sat it into our new K11 (Mildred?) Started sweet as and sounded good- possibly a dry bearing on one of the fan belt idlers. We drive in convoy to the supermarket. It drives really really well !!! Neat. Its a bit bouncy- in that fun sort of slightly over sprung way that a boyracer car does when fitted with cutties. We manage to score parking spot side by side at the super market for maximum coo value from all the punters as they walk by and spot the two little k11s parked together (in my world this happens).. We drive home. I was going to put some extra fuel in it because its a bit low but when I arrived at our local station there was a line of paranoid idiots waiting to fuel up after having heard ominous tales of further fuel price rises. So we continue homeward. I have some fun on our hillclimb racetrack road tailing a flash bmw coupe that couldn't shake me. Little cars, willing little revvy hearts = such fun Took some photos once home. These driving lights work and look neat.. Sporty seats. Funky patterns... Black dash goodness. Steering wheel looks like a Primera item? Bit of rust on the wing/guard. There's a bit on one door as well. Nothing major though. Now inside where I'll hoist it into the air and sort out the rusty front crossmember.. Then give it a good clean, replace the missing trip around the screen (it has a windscreen chip that has been repaired) and we can advertise it for sale. I'm just stoked we saved her (Martha? Yes !!! Martha Hannah's has a sister named Martha. Perfect) because there was a strong chance this car was going to end up crushed. *I would never look at such things. Honest. Edit:I've been informed by a few k11 boffins on Facebook that it is a facelift g#. So quite a score then.

  40. A couple of weeks later an old, dear mate and I headed down to a lifestyle block in the Kaimi’s for the day. Apparently a for some years a good keen man had been collecting a few old Vauxhalls…….(understatement of the bloody century!). He had a very rusty old J that was being wrecked as a parts car……. With the help of a seriously cool old Fergy tractor and some seriously cool Vauxhall car club members (i.e. fanatics) we dragged it out of the shed that it had been in for the last 25 years and I fired up my trusty chop saw. One 76 year old B pillar body cut and a massive thanks to the guys from the Vauxhall car club, you guys rock! I’ll splice it in when I get the doors out of storage so I can check alignment before seam welding. Also scored a genuine tail lamp – been looking for one for years. To top it off they gave me a replacement trafficator – Rigamortice and I thought it was Xmas! Back home to Wild Turkey time for me and Rigamortice in the "almost world famous" sr2 man-cave.

  42. car went to the paint shop to get the runs out of it and get the final cut and polish. i went and picked it up last night and it looks amazing. anywho, today i wanted to fix the exhaust where the flex joint had worn through because its the lowest point and its had a fucking over judder bars and whatnot and subsequently has a hole it in. step 1 - jack up your car. this is where things went wrong. 2021-04-25_02-55-42 by sheepers, on Flickr car slid off the jack on the way up. given what could have happened i got off extremely lightly. it bent the radiator support up and bent the bottom of the radiator real bad. it also bent the bottom of the front bumper. however, the radiator isn't leaking and the crank pulley is unscathed which is a fucking miracle given what happened. i was able to bash the rad support back down and i got most of the bend out of the bumper so it looks fairly normal again. fuck it could have been WAY worse.................. so yea, after dealing with that i moved on to fixing the zorst. cut out the fucked bit, made a new bit, tacked it in place, remove zorst from car and fully weld, add 4mm thick bash plate and put zorst back in car. 2021-04-25_02-55-49 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_02-55-55 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_02-56-02 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_02-56-09 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_02-56-21 by sheepers, on Flickr then it was time to wax the newly polished paint. that went well. it looks pretty ace tbh and yea, i cant take a photo that justifies how good it looks. but it looks good. take my word for it. 2021-04-25_05-34-27 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_06-18-48 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_06-19-23 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_06-32-09 by sheepers, on Flickr
