  1. All glued up. Ready to clamp it down to the pallet, then drop it to the ground. Went a lot smoother than last time but still a big big mission. Need a bigger area and a better way of mixing sand. I think its a little lighter than the last one. In preparation I added some 'helper' air bags to the El Camino a few weeks back. Should be good for 1000lbs.....

  2. Sprayed everything with the insulative coating. Youre meant to set fire to it just after spraying, but the shed was pretty hazy and Im sure the spray is 90% alcohol. So didnt want to explode the house! Got all the riser holes and vents done. Dry fits together well.

  3. So i made a thing from ali this time Will likely bomb it black at some point, its a bit too shiny for me. Thanks to Richie i now have some cam covers that have the lower bolt provisions for the COP plate so im working on getting those tidied up, modified for breathers and painted. I've also been making a few brake hard lines and about to start buying the ecu and sensors etc.

  5. I realised the other day that I never did a "post Te-Uruwera post" The bike went awesome, it was truck loads of fun to ride. A little over-loaded luggage wise, but I was reasonably happy with what I'd packed. With the rain, I used everything I had packed, but I'll try and get a bit lighter this year. The bike tried to kill itself on every day of the ride. Day 1 - Heading along the big straight bits into gizzy, ringing its neck, max vibrations etc. Went to change down the gears coming to an intersection and the gear lever wouldn't move... So I managed to coax it into gizzy in top gear. Then stopped at the bottle store, got it into second gear with some wriggling, and then had to crawl to the motel in 2nd gear (slooooow on a TS...) Whipped the clutch cover off and found a screw that had wound its way out into the shifter mechanism. Easy fix. Day 2, heading along some of the big fast hill sections into Waikeremoana, ringing its neck again, absolutely flying. Did a big downhill section to a stop and it did a massive lean-out. The carb had slid out of its boot and was sucking through just enough fuel to keep it firing. Shit it got hot. I let it cool down for ages and then it was sweet after that. Also heading into Waikeremoana the rear brake kept over centering and jamming on any time I touched it. So whipped the wheel off and shimmed it out with a baked bean tin.

  6. I can do better than that as I have a forklift. I have just spent a couple of hours building some lift struts that hook in to the awning rail and it is dodgy as fuck. It's off the deck but sways around like a motherfucker 1.2m off the ground. I think I am going to change a little bit of stuff which will let me wrap lifting strops all the way around and use the forklift.. Or fix some lifting points into the roof which is probably a better solution. Better than this anyway lols

  8. A year after ordering my SR-241's I finally have two of them in the shed now, so I can put some less chunky off-road rubber on. It also came apparent during Te-Uruwera, that this thing has quite the twist in the frame. It turns one way much better than the other, and is really obvious to those following it. So I've been on the look-out for a donor frame to re-build it. And also been wanting to find a spare set of wheels so I can swap between the skinny road racer tires and the SR-241's without too much issue. I scored this on trademe a couple of weeks ago, its an RGV50 I think, I reckon the wheels should fit. And then this came up for sale too: The new GT50 is actually waaay too good to trash for rebuilding my 100cc machine, so I might fix it up as a legit GT50, and then build something else eventually out of the silver bullet, maybe even using the RGV frame. So many options now!

  9. Pattern came out a lot easier this time. Mould looks pretty good for the most part! A few little areas that didnt pack well and also damaged some of the sharp corners. Close enough to good enough

  10. Dyno day. Glen beat on the poor old girl like a rented mule and it took it all like a champ. Only had one small issue with spark plug boots not being tight enough and it starting missing at high boost. That was easy fixed and it ended up making 460RWKW at 25psi. I still have a new intercooler to fit and then it'll get a new tune but it won't change much. If I thought it was frightening before I got a whole new level of violence to learn about. Graph shows old turbo tune and new turbo tune at both boost levels for each.

  11. This week in Cabin Builders News; I glued up the doors and mounted them. Many different interior finishes. Then I made some things so the back door could be strutted open with some cheapish Comac struts. I had a small solar panel lying around so I glued this on. I had been using this as a battery charger with a small solar controller so I bought a dinky battery and an LED light and installed all that. The controller has a USB port so theoretically I can charge my phone at night. No pic cos it needs charging and isn't that interesting anyway... Got the cabin sitting on the back more or less; Not much adjustment on those struts so those doors don't open quite as high as I would like, probably brain myself eventually as the front edges are at a good height for that. I then spent a minor amount of time attaching the hold down latches, and absolutely fucking ages making several iterations of the clamps such that it worked properlyish. The adjustment is sensitive to sideways movement of the cabin, I may need to rethink the rear ones.. Now I need to make something like 4x struts so I can lift it a bit and drive away without having to use the forklift to get it on as this is awkward. Then sort the door latches. Then increase the rear door overhang so less rain gets in, I'll probably just glue some flat ally I have on. Then I'll be sorted.

  14. Then @EpochNZwanders over one day to have a look at VW suspension on the drive. After, we have a quick look at the DAi, and it starts on the jumper cables. Hang on!. The battery is showing 12.8V after settling after charging, (OK), but drooping to 10V and less under load when starting. So I head off to Faast fit who supplied it, he tests it (OK on the hygrometer, but poos output current). It's just been a dead battery, all this time! Faast replaces under warranty (good service), and I throw a wee brass strap on because it's a slightly different shape. Runner! Drive to work. It's oookay, but not running well, maybe a little lean? Found an online airfilter dimension search (finally), and toss one in, then change the carb back to the one on the right (no hole in the barrel from long screw), and back to normal for that motor. Sheesh, what a chore. I need to remember to check the basics first. Anyways, it bloody great to be punting this around town again, and now I can get back to important tricky jobs like changing the carpet.

  16. Been many a moon since I've come onto OldSchool but I decided to come back and stalk the update posts for you and @sheepers because I knew big things had been going on Super super super stoked still to read over the build on this again with the antics of a couple of weeks ago pretty fresh in memory. Was just great to hear the noises this thing makes, the way it's presented and to get to go for a drive around and generally experience how brilliantly the whole thing has come together. It is ideal that you stuck with it and taken it to the point it is now, it was honestly a real happy time seeing Richy chuckles and stoked faces as it became clear that it all was working and was going to be a hilariously fun outcome. The trip was never going to be a chore, its always choice catching up and I love playing with cars like this but being able to add a tiny piece of the puzzle that has a tangible effect on the final package of this thing makes me warm inside. Awesome work with the build, man. Its such a great car and I think that as much as it looks great in pics, the thing needs to be seen or experienced in person to realise how bloody on point the whole thing is.

  18. Decided to adjust the tappets now they had settled in and got a wee bit clacky. I'm on the last stretch checking all the nuts are tight and on the last one we get a funny noise and this rather disappointing result. Fortunately I have two other sets of rockers so I grabbed the best set, ran a stone over the valve faces and chucked them in, all is up and running again. This set was rather hard to adjust for some reason, the screw would turn with the nut and felt quite spongy when tightening up. The new set was way more confidence inspiring for some reason... Or I'm a hamfisted monkey.

  27. Next up is getting set up for bending seat stays. I bought a 3 ton arbor press cause I figured it would be nice piece of kit to have for fabricating things. The seat stays are 5/8" tube .049 thick (about 1.2mm, most of the other tubes are .035"/0.9mm for reference) so I needed to make some tooling for the press to bend these, hopefully without kinking. I turned some form tools out of 51mm ali I had lying around and then turned off the bottom of one piece for the press tool. The piece to the left I needed to cut in half for supporting either side so I resorted to the scary tablesaw of death. I screwed it down to a sled with a piece of angle iron and hid behind the sled while feeding it through. My gamble with tablesaw russian roulette paid off and the part was cut fairly cleanly, though not quite as even as I had hoped. Still, didn't really matter for what I had in mind Gave it a press and the bend came out... ... with a horrible wrinkle on the inside. Sigh. This photo actually makes it look far worse than it is, so I just went ahead and used it anyway considering this piece of material is about $30 worth @ 460mm long. For the second stay I did some file work on the upper tool to increase the radius of the bending form and it was much better.

  29. May 22, Ok, probably not spark? Looks little lackadaisical, so nipped up the plug gaps for a longer lasting spark. Carb trouble? Hoick a spare in... Carb spring spare by BIQ and mis=-matched cable bracket mods... Ah, starts! on ether.. once ???

  30. So that was back in April? Anyways, I got to worrying about important things like changing the carpet. At the carpet place, the old girl stopped, and wouldn't kick over, even with jump starting. Then work started getting busy, so it got slow to look at it. May 7. Found this. That'll be it, fuel leaking round the booster plunger... Resulting in one fouled plug... Checked, cleaned pugs, carry on.

  31. Omg what a fucking mission. Went to do the crankseal/timing belt on the shuttle Lisa is driving Stopleak didn't fix the cooked crank seal. It leaked out a litre of oil over the past few weeks Turned into a 11 hr marathon Crank pulley was locktited in and done up to 11ty uggaduggas. Had to drop the exhaust to get to the flex plate to lock the motor. Promptly stripped a thread in the manifold Oil seal didn't want to come out nicely so oil pump had to come out, which meant sump out, which meant transfer case out. Transfer case wasn't coming out without a fight Make sure you get rtv in the oil gallery's to pack out the bearings. Luckily I had a oil pump oring in the gasket set Bottom half done New belt finally going back on This fought me at every step. Bloody honda rtv the sump gasket to the sump from factory so it was a bloody mission to ckeam that off. Hopefully that fixes the worst of the leaks. Rear main is weeping and it'll stay weeping as I'm not pulling the trans out

  32. You've got no idea who's been tightening shit over the years.. Got this Italian bloke who works for us and he fucken overtightens everything all the time. Its like he has to prove he can get it tighter than anyone else. Maybe the previous owner had small man syndrome.. or he was italian, maybe both, they seem to go hand in hand.

  38. Runner system pattern complete. Re sprayed everything with the better mould release. All patterns ready to go now. Next will be testing out the new sand resin system to figure out ratios and work times. Dont really want to go all in with a 200kg batch first go!

  39. Short answer: no they wont, totally different port spacing/bolt patterns/engines. Easiest way would be to put a 32/36weber downdraft on with an adaptor plate. Otherwise custom manifold

  40. Doing 2 sprues/filters on this one which each feed one side of the casting. There will be more volume but also the mould is higher with no basin which will give more pressure. Completed the box. Quicker and cleaner than the last one. Next will be the runner system pattern/box.

  41. Time to have another go Got almost a ton of sand, new resin system and a new insulating spray for the moulds (meant to help big thin castings). Planning to use a concrete mixer to do larger batches. Doing some repairs to the damaged patterns. Drilled holes in the print and injected concrete epoxy. Also adding a few bond on thread plates to hopefully get a slide hammer on.

  42. I have been picking away at the cabin of an evening, which got me thinking about camping trips and spare wheels. So I thought I had better make provision for one, and later, two; It's a bit flexi, which it probably needs as it is bolted to both the cab and deck, but it might bang on the roof if I hit a bump. I'll go for a run and see how it goes, I'll probably wedge some padding underneath, it's pretty close. Even though you can't tell the cabin is now covered with 3 diffey thicknesses of three different types of material, ie a $100 sheet of 2mm ACM, $20 sheets of 3mm foamed PVC, and free sheets of 4mm foamed fuck knows what packaging material. It looks way better in the pics than it actually is. Nevertheless I ordered a few hundred dollars worth of hardware from Comac today, this will give me lift struts and locking doors and allow me to clamp it to the deck, yay. That's all for now.
