  1. Just a small update - not long after getting it I put it through the Ontario equivalent of a WOF, the "Safety Check" which it passed not needing much. With new plates (old owner takes their plates off) and ridiculously expensive mandatory insurance it was back on the road. It's first legal trip was to the supermarket, where someone in their oversized Datsun prompted used my bumper (and 2 day old fresh plate) as a parking spot. I now have a dashcam & tyre valve stem remover kept in my glovebox for these times. Bought many a box of service items from RockAuto And some Solex locks from 'straya maaaate because the original lock barrels can be opened with almost any key and it has keyless entry anyway. Also had my first break down, can you spot the problem? ** Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/74793-helium-elbows-magical-rx-7-fb/ **

  2. ** Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/74793-helium-elbows-magical-rx-7-fb/ ** As 3-4 months of winter snow is coming up in just a few weeks I'm going to take it off the road and do a bit of a refresh. It needs a bit of a tidy up body wise as there is some faded/crazed paint on the passenger guard and door, and some little bits of surface rust here and there to tend to. I've salvaged the Racing Beat Road Race header and Power Pulse pre-silencer and main muffler from the parts car And picked up some Enkei EK98 15x7 -3 wheels which could do with a bit of a tidy up. The lips have been painted silver and I want to take them back to polished metal. Not keen on the black centres either, looking to go a metallic silver or bronzey/gunmetal. Also found the original owner's manual

  12. Rode my pushbike to work for the first time this week, appointment to see the surgeon tomorrow to get the all clear to start physio. WR250R is now paid off so I can start eyeing up other options. If anyone is keen on my FT500 project (rego on hold) I'd love to exchange it for a lifan'd (or similar) beauty.

  16. ** Discussion https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/74793-helium-elbows-magical-rx-7-fb/ ** So I never thought I would end up owning a rotary any time soon but wasn't having too much luck finding a sweet Starion/Conquest near me over the last year or so. This came up locally for a good price and thought why the fuck not. It's a 1985 Canadian spec FB RX-7 GSL-SE with the IMSA Targa option. It's basically the same as US spec top of the line GSL-SE with 13B RE-EGI engine just with km/h dials instead of mph. IMSA Targa package adds faux brushed metal targa band (I'm not the biggest fan), front splitter (currently off the car broken) and rear wrap around wing. Factory options include maroon leather interior, electric windows/mirrors, push button climate control A/C, LSD with larger vented disc brakes F&R, cruise control, and glass moon roof with carry bag. It's a two owner car with 167k kms on the clock. Needs a little tidy up with a few small rust patches but otherwise it's a solid body and completely factory original inside and out. It comes with an almost complete '84 GSL-SE parts car that has a 10k old rebuilt engine (though hasn't run for years) and a Racing Beat full exhaust which will probably find its way onto the good car. Plans are to tidy it up over time and bring it back to as factory fresh condition as possible. Probably hang onto it here in Canada for a while and perhaps even bring back to NZ with me. 17. Keen to try this road if we do the OG route round east cape instead of using the sealed coast road https://www.google.com/maps?geocode=FVJYwv0dd5ygCg%3D%3D;Faozu_0dNXueCg%3D%3D;FXlpuv0dTjKeCg%3D%3D;FfNMuv0dm0aeCg%3D%3D;FZu1t_0dEZGdCg%3D%3D;Fabptf0djuecCg%3D%3D;FUkDs_0d0HSbCg%3D%3D;FbXxsf0ddUycCik9kNnmKHhmbTGjXdM5uJzp-A%3D%3D&daddr=-38.0631911,178.1583886+to:-38.1149520,178.1397258+to:-38.1222540,178.1449226+to:-38.2920705,178.0984489+to:-38.4098195,178.0550541+to:-38.5998636,177.9601438+to:Waikanae+Beach+Motel+Salisbury+Road,+Awapuni,+Gisborne&saddr=-37.5950553,178.2979754&dirflg=dh&ftid=0x6d667828e6d9903d:0xf8e99cb839d35da3&shorturl=1

  18. Work It's a chiller converted. Full on Barry. There's copious amounts of bed liner and silicone on the cab roof to stop leaks, solar led lights glued to the outside, even Barry sharn starter notes stuck to the dash board. He's got what looks like acrylic for side windows, I though that it not being a passenger compartment it was ok, but apparently not.

  22. While I was fabricating the roller, I visited a bunch of engineers in the region and found that no one had a lathe big enough to machine it. Bugger. After getting some quotes from further abroad that would have blown my entire budget by themselves (15-20k). I decided that I'd just build my own lathe.. I jumped onto Ebay and ordered the cheapest set of linear rails I could find, including the ball screw and bearing blocks. 3-4 weeks later I got set to mocking up the "lathe" using the compound slide from my Stanko mounted to some adapters. Spinning the roll by hand with the compound slide clamped to the linear rail, I took the first test cut. "Fuuck yeah, this'll work" I said.. It would have taken forever to machine the 3mm x 25mm weld bead off, but I remember once when @kpr mounted his angle grinder in the lathe to cut through some hardening on a set of axles from memory? (that image is burnt into my mind, probably thinking it might be a useful trick one day. cheers dude!) The grinder worked really well and made short work of it. Spinning the ball screw with a battery drill.

  23. Inspired by the sheer joy that has been the Eastcape Escapade, and the Te Urewera Undertaking, it's been decided that the south island needs something similar. Brace yourself for the Molesworth Moped Melee! We reckon it's going to go something like this, Friday 5th March, we're setting off from the beautiful alpine resort town of Hanmer springs. And traveling the Molesworth road, taking Taylor's pass, through to Blenheim for the night. This is around 200kms. (Mostly unsealed) https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1G4yXjXAnRQ8CSi-WwTN4hghbMgk89sek&usp=sharing We'll likely do a BBQ lunch on this day, because there is literally nothing on this route. Day 2, Blenheim to Nelson. With a possible detour up the north bank of the Wairau river, and up mount Patriach Then back through to Nelson via the Maungatapu track/past the Maitai dam. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1rk2QIYvV-II3QYy6cvcHh-ygYrv_g9uq&usp=sharing Day 3, Nelson back to Hanmer, via St Arnaud, and the Rainbow road (toll road). https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1PTxU0yCmEI9Ogb2r58O_4cDfhcx-w5MM&usp=sharing We have some parties interested I driving back up vehicles with trailers. They can carry some gear. But riders are encouraged to be as self suffiecnt as possible. This post will be updated with proper maps and shit later. But I wanted to get it out there to get the fizz going. For those not familiar with the north island format, this is a ride for scooters/mopeds/small bikes. Theres no challange in attempting this on a 750cc adventure bike. More specific information will be added, as I think of it. 26. Just to follow up, I'd been massively overthinking the complexity of this job. (with head on the bench off motor) Step 1: place stuff under the valves to stop them moving/bending Step 2: place a 19mm socket with a magnetic thing on the inside, on top of the retainer Step 3: hit it with the hammer step 4: Valve retainer thing is off Too easy Now to try the rope trick and get a knot stuck in it Might try on a pick a part engine first haha.

  27. Drag day is awesome! Sadly I can’t make it this year due to missus work Christmas party. (Should just have it at drag day I reckon). Some fast cars, some slow cars, some burnouts, some one-wheeler-peeler squealies. Get amongst it!

  30. I was fuming and I was waiting a while for the person to come back, but what would it have achieved? it could have been a widdle old lady who was completely oblivious, or it could have been the hulk who would beat me to pulp. There wasn't any monetary damage other than a bent plate, but that didn't stop me from writing the most Canadian passive aggressive note left on their windscreen. But yeah, next time it'll be four flat tyres with their valve stems removed.

  32. while im here. Ive built this amazing turd to do some testing on. Its a super janky mixup of parts. but kinda resembles a stock smallport engine. although the head has had port and chamber work done to it, was only spare i have. why? mostly because i need to test some questionable mods, i dont want to try on my good engine. but also good opportunity to kinda start from the bottom an dyno test stuff that works, that doesn't involve building an expensive engine. I have some hand me down parts that can go on it. itb's and cams and the likes

  35. So both Jon and I are rotary guys from way back - we met back in the 90s while both driving FCs, and hung out in Paraparaumu. People from the region will know of the reputation it had for breeding some rowdy, rough, rugged and the occasional pretty quick rotary. Legend has it the very first rotor DX came from there! Naturally because of this, Jon wanted to build a bridgeport motor for this car. I wasn't super into the idea, as to do a bridgeport justice, it'd need way more serious gear than the car came with. Plus they aren't the most user friendly things for low speed, around town, general cruising, and I really just wanted something pretty quick but still usable. The stuff the car came with would easily support 220kw, which is heaps for a road car in reality. So I put the kaibosh on the idea. Stock ports are fine for what I want!. I get a message from Jon a few days later "Hey, it looks like they must test run these crate motors" Ahhh, why do you say that??? 'There's a bit of rust in the cooling jacket..." Oh FFS, I guess this is happening then. I got many pic updates over the following days as he quite gleefully hacked into my BRAND FUCKING NEW irons Now the first issue that I'd need to tackle anyway, was a decent clutch, because even a mild tune REW would torch a standard clutch without much hassle. No worries says Jon, I've got the old clutch from my Skyline, it'll be perfect for this. An OS Giken TS2B twin plate, with the necessary pull/push converter. Had done sub 1500km before he did a big upgrade, so ideal, albeit overkill for what I wanted. While it was in bits, I figured that I might as well get it all balanced, just for peace of mind. So the whole rotating assembly was sent off, returned all matchy matchy, and duly assembled.

  37. True, probably need to be quite careful with your approach to making a mold from it then too. I'd first consider making one from 2 part polyurethane closed cell expanding foam Not the shit in a can but buy some of the good stuff. Wax up the wing fairly liberally box up the perimeter then pour it on. As that way if the mold doesnt release it's less likely to damage the original part getting it back out. And prob try it first on something similar to get a feel for it. I've had more than 1 thing that never came back out of a mold...

  38. If i wanted to make a mould and copy this spoiler, what would be the best way to do it? Its currently a big solid slab of foam rubber. Would be looking to make carbon versions eventually but probably start with fibreglass for cost/practice. The basic shame seems fairly simple. Fill the cracks, coat it in something and then lay fibreglass to make a mould? A bit like this I guess Ideally I want it to have a flat base, and hollow. Would it be best to make it in two pieces, the top/sides and the bottom and then adhere them together at the end? This would make it easier to affix studs into the base if I wanted to.
    1 point
  39. Yeah sharp corners are the bane of my existence Looks good, look forward to seeing result! I've still got a love for carbon sleeve its just so good and easy to use. Every time I make something I think it gets a little bit better and easier. But I'm honing in on a super easy way to make decent-ish trumpets for ITB setup. I've been running a few 3d printed variants but think I've found best length that I can fit so make some better ones. I tried to incorporate the base part into a single piece as well but it's just easier as 2 piece. This is the dissolvable 3d print material but in this instance it's actually easier to just print it really thin and hollow and just break it all out. Trimming stuff with a razor blade while it's still tacky is a life saver

  40. Last weekend it went back together and it’s good to be back dailying. The roof lining took so long + all my patience, doing a part then glueing clamping and leaving it.. Sealing the screens in was pretty frustrating, rubbers went a bit wonky in places/inconsistent shape/mess etc. headlining in, different drivers seat with way less tears (matching passengers is coming)
