  1. While I was fabricating the roller, I visited a bunch of engineers in the region and found that no one had a lathe big enough to machine it. Bugger. After getting some quotes from further abroad that would have blown my entire budget by themselves (15-20k). I decided that I'd just build my own lathe.. I jumped onto Ebay and ordered the cheapest set of linear rails I could find, including the ball screw and bearing blocks. 3-4 weeks later I got set to mocking up the "lathe" using the compound slide from my Stanko mounted to some adapters. Spinning the roll by hand with the compound slide clamped to the linear rail, I took the first test cut. "Fuuck yeah, this'll work" I said.. It would have taken forever to machine the 3mm x 25mm weld bead off, but I remember once when @kpr mounted his angle grinder in the lathe to cut through some hardening on a set of axles from memory? (that image is burnt into my mind, probably thinking it might be a useful trick one day. cheers dude!) The grinder worked really well and made short work of it. Spinning the ball screw with a battery drill.

  3. I wanna say A+++++ 100% would trade again. Thanks to each and every one of you specimens. EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA special thanks go to Mark for collecting me from the plane station, giving me the penny tour, and stitching me up. Jamie for the ride to J-5s, and back to the plane station. Mark Again (and Max too) for the epic catering. (Seriously, that shit was next level commitment) J-5 for being the hub that enables us all to come together. Hugs, high 5s, and handshandys all round!

  4. Another Shot of the rear spare wheel well. came together quite nicely. Cut the bottom and inner supports off a spare RH guard I had. And welded them onto my slightly better, but rusty on lower parts, RH guard. To go with the new Dakota Digital Bearclaws. I spun these new pins up on the lathe. (no hex bolt head on them compared to the Dakota Digital ones) And my brother, Matt welded them to some countersunk plates. Which fit like this to the factory adjustable mounting plates/ And work great with the bear claws installed in the doors. Today I managed to partially fill two more holes that still exist between the chevy and lexus. Front of the sills, and a new Guard mounting point on the RH side, as it had also rusted away. From beneath you can still see the hole left to be filled between this new patch and the sills plate.

  10. was starting to button things up on the old girl and noticed the wiper mounts lose ..tried to tighten them but they wouldn't ....so out come the heater again the wiper and the panels to get to the wiper mounts them selfs only to find no washers or anything ...so i had a look at the wipers on the white one and ended up steeling the parts from them.. i had the ends of the intercooler cut down and some 90 reducers welded on the end..so not it fits better ; i painted it black and finished the mounts of so it all in and secure i had to cut the ends of the radiator supports off to be able to put the intercooler in ..i made and welded some tabs back on and slapped some riv nuts in modified the rad supports and added some tabs and riv nuts rad supports bolt back on and the rad can bolt back up in the factory spot with a nice air gap as well between intercooler and radiator never know its there....perfect

  11. I spent 4 hours cleaning the front seats today. They went from disgusting crusty greasy messes that I was on the verge of reupholstering to looking really good apart from a few worn patches I didn't take any pictures until I had already cleaned the dirtiest parts but this gives a bit of an indication Cleaned using wet and dry vacuum cleaner, a mix of washing machine powder and an old toothbrush

  12. I had a close call the other day! A rather high truck popped its tow ball bang into the center of my tail light, no panel damage thankfully. They agreed to sort it out and paid for a set of brand new rear lenses to be shipped over. In the mean time I had 1 old L/R lens on the shelf so I could keep on driving. We've managed to put 8,000km on the old girl in the 6 months she's been back on the road! Up and down the South Island with no problems so far. I've probably been a bit hard on it in my excitement because the clutch is feeling like it may need replacing soon, might pay to bed the next one in properly first... I still want to lower it some time, but the current height is pretty handy with how many gravel roads I find myself on. Perhaps air bags are in it's future? We'll see, for now it's too much fun to drive to put it back in the garage.

  14. The underside of the Thames feels like the gift that just keeps on giving at the moment. Spent the morning attacking the passenger side wheel well with a small wire brush on my battery drill. It came up pretty good with quite a bit of the original factory paint intact. Managed to make a start on the chassis rail and floor lip too. More of the same tomorrow.

  15. Fixed intake, had to cut the end off and weld the inside more thoroughly, added some vacuum outlets and made a better pressure testing rig with rubber and roofing screws haha, no leaks in intake or water outlet area now, hope to install tomorrow

  16. Popped into work to use TIG. I've only used one once and that was for about 30 seconds when I was in high school. It's pretty ugly but should come up good enough with a grind. That was on how welder was set and with zero guidance from anyone. I'm quite proud of it, for basically a first timer

  17. Been a bit slow but painting isn't all that interesting.... Have all the major panels in epoxy now... Still making more of these skins, been surprised how popular they are, even sending a set to ozzy this week.

  19. Got the transom corner cap home and took to it with a sanding disc, doesn't look too bad. Once I get trailer finished, I'll need to get a plate, register it and get it wofd. I'll tow it to work and TIG it to the transom top. I've been working through replacing all the (few) steel nuts and bolts with stainless items.

  20. Not finished...but you get the idea. I've made it so the top can move around in 90° increments, so you can use it in whatever position you need. Left, right, big wheel or little wheel etc...Paint to come next.

  21. Went for a drive today, it’s going better than ever apart from the hot start problem witch may be related to the worn out ignition switch witch causes a misfire sometimes. Speedo is working well, 30 MPH works out to be about 58 KPH I can live with that, side mirror blew off but luckily it landed in the car, PCV is wonderful, oil stays clean and way less fumes, I am wondering about slotting the distributor for more advanced, I set it max advance all ready and I am running 91 with no pinging. On the hunt for some 600-15” tires, my front tires are old and hard like they are made from stone

  25. Hey mate if you use stainless bolts make sure they are marine grade and try to put plastic washers so the less stainless hitting the Ali, the 2 metals react and it eats the Ali (even worse it it’s old Ali).

  26. tidying a few things up with the tune. i had no speed signal so the ECU didn't know if we were moving or not. with an E throttle that makes quite the difference. so i put a wheel speed sensor in the back so now it knows we are moving. the other major thing that needed sorting was the rev limit, it was set too low (6500) and it was pretty harsh. so now th rev limit is a more excellent 7500 with a really nice cut that just works. lots of little things were made better in regards to coasting to a stop, the fan coming on, part throttle curse, just more drivability. the other thing that we did was add a bit of timing up top which coupled with the higher rev limit it made 275 killer wasps at the tyres. keen for drag day TBH.

  27. Spent the morning languishing under the Thames with a scraper and wire brush. I ended up lifting it a bit higher so the work angle is less awkward on my poor old back. More scraping tomorrow followed by a second pressure clean. Hard yakka indeed, but its getting there.

  28. Also it just hasn't got the torque range to pull 5th gear, maxes out 4th at 80-90 at ALL the rpm, change to 5th and it drops off pipe and sits on 65-70. Discovered on a steep downhill it will come on pipe eventually in 5th, but fuck it'll never get there without a big ass hill or a typhoon level tailwind! New piston is almost here, so I'll set it up again and just keep it as a city pester as it's a blast around town. Thinking CG125(?) disc front end and a few other improvements will be a good idea and also have thoughts on building something a bit more serious with my spare rolling frame.

  29. Today's job was to bolt the trans to the engine, fill the converter, figure out what starter I need, (there are Australian and US spec starters with different size pinion gears, mine needs a us spec one so that's good cause can get a gear reduction one off rockauto) , make a dipstick tube fit (fingers crossed this works with the firewall and exhaust clearance which is fuck all) , bolt the crossmember on and knock up a trolley to put it all on. The plan is to lift the body up and roll everything under the car to fit it, to avoid damaging painted parts

  30. Tonight's update. Changed the plugs and re-routed the HT leads a bit tidier. Discovered you can't fit a plug socket between the manifold and the plugs....so had to use a spanner which may explain why I found one plug finger tight with sooty brown skid marks all around it. Used genuine GM plugs because they are OE finest quality/$19 for a set of 6. Also named the boat using a $4 K-mart stencil and a Sharpie. This weekend's goal is to go boating with VG and maybe take the missus for a hoon

  31. Finally Cut the horrid mess of a rear guard. That's the Lexus inner guard you can see poking out. Also welded the modified panel from the spare wheel compartment back on. 200-300mm further forward than it was on the Lexus. 15inch wheel still fits no worries. Few more filler panels needed in here, for the last few holes. New panel rolled and swaged made up to go above the ems panel. Both sides all tacked in, and ready for final welding. The boot is going to need a lot of massaging, cutting, and additions, as she's a bit of a mess too.

  32. Not a whole lot to report here. Just been doing a tonne of driving since the engine rebuild. Put over 3000 km on it in the last month and a half. Rebuild included going to far more mild cam, just adds about 500 rpm onto power curve Replaced exhaust manifold with some rush headers as well, no more leaks. Fuel economy is as good as or better than ever Got some new Falken ze912 tyres today, thanks to Chris @CUL8R at Mag and Turbo - should be good for a few more years Here's an adventure picture to compensate you for your time

  34. So went to the wreckers to get the Prop-shaft bushes and nuts (ones on an out-lander are the same) considered grabbing the exhaust of the out-lander as it was 2.5" and a lot closer to the GSR/Evo one then the one I got of the lancer wagon but I was already in to deep with the one I had and didn't want to spend the extra $65 for an exhaust ill use once And then this happened, it only needed one engine mount unbolted and a few hoses removed, and for $200 I couldn't refuse. Will put it on the engine stand and get it down to the short block when I have some spare time. Plan is long term for it so not in a rush, will get forged rods and pistons, along with a rebuild to suit the 4g63 head I have, might aim for 9-10:1 comp but see how we go. Not aiming for stupid power long term, but a bit more displacement and some more low end torque are never things to object too Main reason for the 4G69 is I am trying to get away from possible crank walk issues which the 2G RVR 4G63 I have is known for. I may pick up a 4g64 later on as well, a longer rod motor does appeal, and part of me wouldn't object to running a 4G63 crank in one to get a 2.1 long rod setup I grabbed the DBW throttle body and the throttle pedal from the outlander as well with pig tails so that long term I can go e throttle the current speeduino I have doesnt support it but ill sort something long term Bushes and bolts for the prop shaft installed The boot doesn't look super happy but I have a new one to go on when I get around to it, Might be something I use as a reason it fails RWC Spent way to much time under the car today on the exhaust Welds are a little better but still shit, again this will be off the car as soon as RWC is done so not phased as long as it doesn't leak Started making the Front pipe, ran out of CO2 Argon mix when I started it so switched to straight Argon, will go swap the bottle tomorrow/next week. Again not the best welds in the world but they will do till I get a new turbo setup really need to have a clean up tbh Started mocking up the 90 degree 3" bend I have but need to cut it on an interesting angle so need to go buy a cut off saw to do that. May have to mod my 3" exhaust as I think its too far forward to allow space for a cat

  36. This morning after dropping out the minuscule fuel tank I temporarily refitted the front suspension and pushed the Thames out into the sunlight. It's the first time it's left the shed in about 6 months. I couldn't resist taking a few snaps of it in daylight. It's sitting pretty high with all of the weight removed. It's going to stay outside until I've cleaned up the underside. Tomorrow I'll crack into it with some degreaser and my pressure cleaner.

  37. @Dudley trying to flex on us with his extended lca with fresh black paint. probably got a ndt crack test done as well Oh an yeah the car isnt that broken, just lca poped tyre, and shock needs more oil, maybe seal stuffed. Hydro bumps worked good. watching the roll in slow mo looks like the steering arm over centered and the wheel jamed, along with lack of oil in shock done the weird bouncy thing and over she goes. extended lca's should make it a bit more stable and get rid of some of that positive camber when suspension droops

  41. Spent the last few Weekends making a new front lower cross member and Radiator support bracketry. Radiator is a 1954 Chevrolet style aluminium one. It is 2-3 inches further forward now, and now the bonnet doesn't quite close. Should be easy enough to fix with some light trimming. Fitting a transmission cooler and a large enough battery is going to be fun.
