  1. Thought i'd make a thread to keep track of the progress and antics i get up to with the truck. Basic details. 2005 Mitsubishi Minicab Truck 3G83 - 3cyl 660cc 12 valve SOHC, 10.2:1 compression 5 Speed manual 6.857:1 open diff 14x5.5 +39 wheels with 165/60-14 tyres Moves a surprising amount of weight around, this trip to the dump tipped the scales at 1230kg with a passenger. (Considering its only 700kg dry weight) Also done numerous trips to Bunnings for building supplies and taking my bikes places. Ordered new parts off yahoo japan. Replacement drivers seat belt buckle as it didnt come with one and a factory tool/storage box that bolts under the tray. Future mods planned are different wheels, flares to suit, lowering springs, full paint job and an LSD install once i figure out what fits( factory ones are rare as hens teeth).

  4. In later news, I have installed some new Infinity Reference series speakers and a Pioneer head unit, holy shit, the sound is insane. ALL the bass, like seriously off the chain. LOVING my commute with the awesome music and cruise.

  5. Got this thing all together and running. Still has a rattle after all that I’m going to try and ride it to brass monkey this year. No reason why it wouldn’t make it but I’m still sceptical about it.

  6. Driveline all back together with fluids, fender mirrors reassembled and installed, put the front sway bar back in and inner guards. Then tried to bleed brakes and realised what the tubes were for that came with new master cylinder which I threw out yesterday, called it a day.

  8. Ok been feeling a bit better, feels like making some meaningful progress again. I've been working on the fuse box situation. Working towards the milestone of getting power to ECU and sensors etc - Think that'll help push along towards first engine start. cool. Been looking at a bunch of different places to mount the fusebox, but I reckon in the center console with a cover over it is going to be best option that's easiest to access. So printed a little holder thingy (will have a cover hiding the bolts and edges etc) Then I've been working out on an Excel spreadsheet where all of the ins and outs of the fusebox will need to go. I've decided I'll run an SSR for the fuel pump and engine fan, so these will need to be seperate. As you cant get SSRs in the form factor of those micro relays. But it looks like I'll need at least 3 12 pin plugs for in/out, so will go for four to leave some space for future stuff / important things I've forgotten about. So for sake of tidiness and making it easy to wire up on the bench / unplug in the car. I am printing a 4 way backshell type thing for Deutsch DT 12 way plugs, that will bolt to back of the fuse box. As per usual with 3d printing it took a few iterations to get the clearances nice. But consistent once you get it right so worth the effort. Fingers crossed works out okay and wiring it up is straight forward. Documentation definitely helps, even just looking at Excel sheet you can see how to group things better so the wiring will be tidier.

  9. So, ages ago, I used to buy really shitty cheap cars for daily drivers. I would think "Well, I've got the skills to fix this 300,000km old shitter. So if something goes wrong I wont need to pay a mechanic!" Having this attitude skews the risk/reward equation (as I would later learn, unfavorably towards myself) when factoring in if a particular car is a good idea to buy or not. A major "aha" moment in my life, was where I realized that having additional skills can empower you but also lead you into unique sorts of traps too. I've missed so many weekends of my life where I could have been doing fun stuff, because knowing how to work on cars, meant I navigated my life into the situation where that's what I needed to do a lot. Like, isnt that strange? Instead of skills giving me extra options, they took away the option of doing anything else. Now, pausing to consider this idea for a moment. The skills trap is what is so fascinating about this project. In order to even consider taking this on, you obviously need to be incredibly talented beyond the level of most across a broad range of topics. But that's not enough, you also need to be confident and willing enough to be able to fix the potential issues, even ones you currently have no experience with. Yet, paradoxically, someone like this also has all of the requisite skills for assessing whether this is a good idea or not. Which, I would wager, most people, regardless of skill level, no offence, would say sight unseen purchasing an old TVR is "not". Not even the TVR Barrys sat on the required part of the skills matrix to get this car going. I applaud your efforts. WOF is an amazing milestone. If not for your efforts I doubt this car would have ever seen the road again.

  11. I had way too much fun at Te Uruweras this year but I felt like the RGV150 was just too much bike. So this just happened... I swapped it for an FXR150 I had surplus. Its a 1973 GT50 powered by a TF100. Sporting the best of Aliexpress petrol tank and seat, it looks quite tidy. Theres a few things I want to tidy up on it. The upside down flat(ish) bars will be the first thing in the bin. I went down that road with my CB650 and won’t be doing it again. Most importantly it has a very healthy ring and solid ding so I’m happy.

  13. Hey everyone havnt been doing much lately towards any of my projects but since ive gotten my ass into gear ive dug this my old gn250 out from the back of the shed. So i brought it about 3-4 yrs ago in order to get my bike lieces (which never happened) but instead, being me i decided change everything and pulled the bike to bits, with no knowhow to finish the job. Following that she was put under a tarp out back and parts were put away. But recently I took on the challenge of clearing enough space in my grandad's shed to bring it inside so i can work on it. Overcoming that ive been able to store / work on it indoors and have acquired some parts in hopes to finish what i started yrs ago! Goals this time is to turn it into so kind of bobber style bike but with little money, skill or experience..... so wish me luck! I didnt get any before photos from when i brought it but it was a completely stock 88 Suzuki gn250 and was absolutely mint! The fist photo is of it when i first got it inside, it still has the 1" drag bar i got when i first got the bike (which dont fit so had to go). And as youll see the state of the shelves in this shed youll realize what i was dealing with to get a work bench and enough floor space to get this inside...

  15. Made this today, I'm testing out a potential offset option. Only way to see if my idea is heading in the right direction is to mock up a wheel with this to check clearance. And offered up to the rear hub Boom! Like a glove!!! Theres still 10 plus turns of thread engagement on the wheel studs, so pretty happy with that.

  17. Helped a friend with his deck, turned out pretty sweet. He'd made a few compounding errors that got away on him...I helped straighten it out, well at least it looks straight now, even if it isn't really. I've made him some floating steps, 1 on one side, 2 on the other. Ran out of time today (12hrs, no breaks) and my brain isn't working. Shit, shower, shave and I'll be good to go again. All he needs to do is wait for concrete to dry and slap on the boards for the steps which are framed and ready to go.

  18. Nah, be less expensive to bring it down here. I've got plenty of parking and I'm sure the boy would start it up regularly and even drive it around a bit just to make sure everything still works.

  19. Filled about 50 holes in the engine and removed all the brackets I no longer need. Laser cutting a sheet of all the filler pieces made it way quicker and easier! Where the chassis rail kicks up at the firewall is a known place where cracks can form. There was already one about 8mm long on the passengers side. Made some gussets and welded them in. Found some previous repairs around the rear hatch on the body. I think they just ground out the rust spots here and then bogged it up. Cut out and welded new steel in there. Another one here, this time just a piece of steel brazed over the top of the rust holes. Fixed! As well as a few more bits around the seal. Picked up a pair off TA22 Celica fender mirrors from YAJ, that you can kinda see. I think they look good, but hard to tell when half the cars missing. Bought a Estima F series diff. Stripped in right down, cut off all the brackets and then noticed one of the housing tubes was very bent! One end was out by at least 10mm. Had a go at straightening it, wrapped some chain around the tube and some big u-channel, and then used a bottle jack and heat to push it out. Came out pretty good, close enough to then shorten it. Drew up a jig that held it all square and inline. Shortened it by 105mm a side, so it's the same dimensions drum to drum as the factory diff. Bought some MRP adjustable 4-link arms off @Cdarust Got a Altezza Torsen LSD head to swap in. Made some upper and lower brackets for the diff. Borrowed @oftensideways rotisserie. Going to raise the rear 4-link body mounts up. About 50mm higher for the lower mount, which should make the lower arm level and somewhere between 50-100mm higher on the top arm. The angles are currently far too much and I've gone this far so may as well, will be good to get rid of the lower body mounts as they're the lowest part of the car. It shouldn't effect the rear seat too much either.

  20. Perhaps if the cost is near enough to the same it would be preferable to get the cert man to come to you. That way you would have your workshop and tools available for any finishing touches that may be required.

  21. FUUUCK... Was not rusty like this when I put the pump in a few years ago. Maybe it just wasn’t visible and it washed of with a full tank? Have a ‘new’ good tank to go in.

  22. Not much happening with this, got it legal and drove it around a bit over christmas break. Had a few new wheel days Put the streets on for a change Finally fixed a front guard, to replace the one that had an incident with the wall at hampton downs about 5 years ago. pretty good for a spray can job Got another pair of 14x7 03's from old mate @Dudley . Finished polishing them, and some antique gold. after digging out the other pair i'd been hording, they needed same treatment. guard slightly different colour, but will do for now /forever. maybe in another 5 years will fix the bonnet Back to the OG look from 10 years ago except for 7's instead of 6.5's

  23. Not having a good time. Probably should have sorted the subframe before shopping for tyres. May reluctantly end up running 7 inch rear and 7.5 inch front to get through cert.

  24. Tidied up the damaged thread and got it all back together. Felt pretty good. New oil and filter. Looked like the old oil filter hadn’t been changed in a while. Pull clutch and hit starter and clutch fluid sprays out of perishes line and starter clicks It wouldn’t be a project if there wasn’t something else after you think it’s sorted.

  26. My wife's Laser was hard to start for some months. Once started it ran fine. The problem was thought by many to be fuel related but eventually turned out to be a faulty ignition module.

  28. Was wanting to get a grinder for home, getting into a bit of knife making. Workmate who also does knife making said he had drawn up a 2x72 one. So we got a couple water cut out. Grabbed a motor and a VSD off some equipment at work that was getting thrown out. Few more things to do, get wheels, make a base, turn up an adaptor for my motor, make a housing for the VSD but getting there slowly on our lunch breaks. It also tilts so can use it horizontal which is cool.

  29. So I was home over the Chistmas period and gave it a clean up inside & out, ripped off the crap aftermarket whistling roof-racks, replaced broken radio antenna mast, replaced the sagging roof lining, re-glued up some of the door seals, replaced speakers, refurb'd/tinted rear tail lamps, replaced rocker cover gaskets and slapped on my Mk1 GTO 16" wheels with new tyres. I still need to replace some broken interior plastics and sort out the sloppy automatic shifter.

  33. Morning all, so my friendly panelbeater discovered a little rust in both front floor pans. ( Not really surprised ) . So ordered two new ones from Palmside and I'll get him to fit an automatic transmission tunnel at the same time he fits them.
