  1. Always been a fan of Burt and his achievements, had to build a tribute to him, not the same model nor is she a streamliner. Drew up the plans on paper then cut bits of old bikes to get the parts for the frame. Live pretty isolated so only got an arch welder. Few twists with this one she has an electric pedal assist kit. Gave her the "barn find" paint job. Engine parts, bits of plywood, plumbing pipe, brake lines, an old torch and other junk. She can be a board tracker as well as a street machine.

  4. The countdown to Te Urewera is on! So far I've managed to complete a few things: Replaced broken front brake lever Made headlight and tail light work Fixed lighting switches Shocked myself trying to operate the kill switch Installed a horn button from another bike as a kill switch Fixed chain tension (it was floppier than I've ever seen) Tightened head tube bearings Checked oil pump - it works! The previous owner was pre-mixing the gas because he doesn't trust self-mix setups... But it still has 1/4 of a tank of oil and my from my tests it seems like the pump works fine, so it would have been RICH on oil the whole time he owned it. Still to do: Fit new front tyre Luggage rack / panini paneer panniers Mount number plate Carb clean and rebuild Fit an ignition barrel / key / anti theft device It also has a bit of a rattle that I think could be piston slap or a noisey kickstart idle gear. More diagnosis required. I've poked my finger up the exhaust port and it certainly seems to have some slap at BDC. It might need a good warm run before I can diagnose it properly. If it comes to it, I've got a freshly bored cylinder on the other MX that can go in its place.

  5. A dude I know here has made a ute out of his safari, and put twin 3" stacks up the back, he loves that shit. He spent a bit of time trying to convince me to do the same.

  6. POSITIVES nice straight apparently rust free body with original paint amazing chrome trim etc amazing condition seats and very good interior rebuilt gearbox electronic ignition engine bay looks good and clearly well looked after all the paperwork and documents NEGATIVES failed left rear hydrolastic displacer clutch seized - suspect hydraulics not clutch engine hasn’t started but turns over nicely - suspect old fuel/failed fuel pump may need a door hinge pin or two My biggest concern atm is sorting the hydrolastic but the rest is just a bit of pfaffing

  7. New front tyre fitted: Speedo in place: Dodgy epoxy job to keep the sensor where it should be. I slapped a couple of neodymium magnets onto it for a stronger signal: And this sweet accessory courtesy of @Geophy. Perfect for a few beers and other paraphernalia.

  9. Did you know those high voltage generator things they sell on ebay are actually really good for low revving engines as ignition parts? The increase in fuel economy is slightly better than the electronic ignition i am using currently. I suspect they burn away the spark plug electrodes over time though. I might explore better power supplies in the future & re-visit this idea. Do try it.

  10. Damn over 3 years and no updates... Got the escort down to Chch, bought a mk1 escort, sold a mk1 escort, bought a house, was away for 8 months overseas with work, sold the courier, bought a ranger and life has just gotten in the way while projects have taken a back seat. But back to it... Pics of the MK1 I had to fill the void Back the MK2, so i sold the Courier diff as it was just too big and im not planning on making heaps of power. Went and got another standard escort diff which ill put a quaife ATB LSD into and if i end up breaking axles ill buy some off the shelf semi floating axles. Still planning on rear disks of the P11 primera type as palmside sell a kit. Had a wee tinker with the front brake set up as im not too happy with the princess 4 pot calipers, they are so damn heavy. Bolt on yes, bigger pad than M16 yes, heavier yes. Ive had some FD rx7 4 pots sitting in the corner for ages so decided to cut up some angle steel ive had lying around and see if i can adapt them to fit. Was super easy with some crude measuring and managed to at least get them mounted. They fit pretty well and the pads contact the 260mm disk bloody well. Will change from KE laser disks to BMW E30 vented items as they are 22mm thick as per rx7. Best thing is they fit inside 13inch wheels! Gearbox is finally attached to the dummy block and comes out of the original gearhole which is a plus

  11. Short version of the story goes, the guys who sold me the pallet of 18rg parts to help me repair the corona engine also had a Lotus Seven replica also running an 18rg on twin weber 40s. Has been in their barn for the last 14 years, but recently they dug it out. Some fresh fuel and a slight fiddle and it was running again. I heard through the grapevine that he was was looking at selling it, and it had my name ALL over it. So several phone calls and a bit of time passed and a deal was struck. So a car I've always liked but never thought I'd really be able to own was mine, even better it was RG powered. Traikered it to the ferry, drove on, drove off, allegedly a quick fang through Picton and onto another trailer back to chch. From what I can see, the webers will need a rebuild kit thrown at them, an oil leak from the sump plug, probably just a new copper washer, and the wiring for the lights repairing. Then wof time! Included in the deal was a roof, doors than can also zip in half, and a torneou cover which can also zip in half speedster style. I love it so much, even my wife admitted it was really cool, and she's usually indifferent to my cars.

  19. It is actually! Everything works, no rattles or leaks.... odd having a "boot popper" lever in an "old car" Mum & dad bought a Nissan Sunny (FWD L reg) after the Morris 1000 (that lost a Wheel so we'd never get in it again) so a few memories from when i was around 10 years old still learning to speak Datsun & trying to remember if there were any down @ Wilf's (His utes are long gone) Datsun Wiki (AND OS) are wealth of info & great thing about a popular & fairly common car (not this shape it appears) Parts seem fairly accessible! well the one the Stock car kids havnt scavenged up yet anyway WTB : Sunny Badges (one is dust & the other is just hanging in there) the only disappointment is the power level, or lack of it, which is well outweighed by just how Cool we think it is See you @ NATS!

  20. One month left until the Urewera ride and I’ve barely touched the MX100. It needs a lot of work before doing a 500+km mission, so I was looking at taking the FS1 again. Then one day an old acquaintance sent me a message on Facebook: The price was right and it has a couple of upgrades (GN125 rear shocks!). Thanks to @crustywhip for the OSGC freight service to get it up to Hamilton. There’s a list of things to do, but it will all be achievable within 4 weeks. Hopefully it’ll be ready for a medium distance shakedown by mid November! So far I’ve taken it for a brief squirt up the road. Wound it out to 70kph at low rpm in 5th, so it should have a reasonable cruising speed for the open road stages.

  21. Want a Rolls Royce but can’t afford one? Then buy a Vandenplas Princess 1100. Connelly Leather seats, fold down walnut trays in the rear, twin carb 1100cc motor, walnut trim. Luxury front grill. Only two on the road in NZ ABSURD and therefore awesome ill be recommissioning it but it’s an excellent start point - I couldn’t help myself Bring it on runamuck - hit me in the comments Need to get it re checked as plates dead but will apply to keep black plates. 85000 odd kms. Strangely only first registered in 1971 even though 1965 - but not an import

  22. So I bought this old dear. It is so utterly ridiculous that I simply had to have it. I pick it up tomorrow and hope she’ll be a fairly straight forward recommissioning of this barn find. Motor turns over but doesn’t start - looks and sounds good though and was driven to the shed it was parked in clutch is stuck but I believe that will be the pivot - not a deal breaker hydrolastic a little saggy on one side but there has been new pipes on it and some no signs of a leak interior and body are bloody good - check out those leather seats - they are mint! Body looks very very good and will clean up beautifully dead rego but all the papers and plates are present

  23. It is a street legal 250 watt job, it's okay for what I use it for but if I went again I'd go a better performing unit. Purchased from the mob below, they don't do the kit I have anymore. http://dillengerelectricbikes.com.au

  28. Epoxy primer should be legit, mine has sat for months and still looks good as new. Pretty sure it seals really well and is hardy enough to protect surfaces till you're ready for top coats. Just might want to give it a light scuff up for the liner to key into. Unless it's being left outside in the weather anyway.

  31. Those autos are very very tough. But they soak all the horsepower. I would 100% Manwell convert it. Those rhl sunny badges always turn to dust. The UV kills them. The rhl seats usually turn to shit too. The shl ones had better fabric.

  36. So old mate Ben gave me a kick in the ass Saturday and we cracked into it. Counter sunk and drove the hex heads down, then planed the fuck outta it for a hour or two, made a lot of mess! Little bit of boiled linseed oil and looking good for a bunch of reclaimed recycled and remanufactured junk. Finished off the end bit today, very happy, can't wait to bolt the vice down. Thing is stupid heavy, solid and will keep everything inside tidy.

  37. I posted this in the shed thread awhile back, started it nearly a year ago Started with OG native wood kitchen sink unit, circa 1950s state house. Pretty much just used the front and the old t&g floorboards on the side there, replaced and extended the frame as those old units are quite shallow. The bottoms of the drawers were worn down almost a centimeter in places from years of work, I squared it all up and replaced the thin mdf shit with this 13mm very sexy ply off cuts from work. Bottom won't full outta these! Painted the unit with the cheap dump shop paint I scored, got a little sidetracked sorting the whole shed out. And that's how it's sat for at least the last few months as life, work etc got in the way.

  39. Repainted brake booster and did some more assembly today. Gave the guards a good scrub down and cleaned the drain channels out. What are you guys using to seal between guards and body along the top seam and what's the best website for acquiring m6 toyota bolt kits? Really struggling with putting crusty parts back on so if anyone could reccomend somewhere in Auckland to get front and rear crossmembers and castor brackets, sway bar and lower control arms powdercoated that would be awesome.

  40. After selling my Mk1 2 door, I brought a 1995 WRX Sti type Ra because who doesn't lust after rally spec cars. Hell of blast, but I want to keep the km's down as I see it appreciating in the future. I needed something that milage or a few shopping market dents wouldn't worry me too much. Found this on fb down in the south island.

  41. I wanted to upgrade our oven for the wife’s 30th, but there seems to be some kind of kitchen tax on nice ranges. I had no idea you could spend so much on a glorified indoor BBQ! So I got a ratty old one of Trademe that was supposedly a good brand and got stuck in. It was in a poor state, looked like it had never been cleaned a day in its life! I found most parts needed replacing and there were a few mouse nests inside... Friends and family were keen to help out which was great. After a few weeks of scrubbing and some parts hunting I could put it back together. I lucked out with a UK crowd that were dirt cheap on shipping and had most parts I needed. I had to get some bits locally, like some lengths of towel rails for the handles. It came out mint, and a fraction of the cost of a new one! Now I’ve just got to shoe horn it into our small kitchen!

  43. Installed carbs, fuel tap and new throttle cable today. Also chucked on the new tank cap! It’s nice not to have fuel all over the place again! All runs and no issues. I am going to pull the engine cover and check started clutch as this is a known problem for these old Kats. Should be all done ready for riding

  44. Soaked in white vinegar, scrubbed, grit blast and then etch primed and enameled today. when I ordered the paint I couldn't be arsed with mixing and having left overs so just got a few rattle cans made up. Pic is of prime only, went with a dark grey and it looks sweet

  45. Haven’t made much progress with this lately, but have bought a couple of bits to help with inspiration. Picked up this spanny, most likely from a YZ125 apparently. Offered it up to the bike and it looks like it’ll work with a bit of fettling. Also found this tank and guard that are a bit more suited to the style I want: might need to shorten the tail of the bike a bit to get the proportions right as the tank is slightly shorter than the original, but I’m happy for now.

  46. 4) Future Plans My plans for her for this year/coming years is to give her a fresh new coat of the factory creme colour, polished chrome and factory interior followed promptly by a lush set of wheels. Next is to fit the engine and gearbox followed with the fuel and management system Followed by refreshing the front end with new adjustable TCA's, anti dive kit and urethane bushes all round. Oh and looooow LUSH J-W-G
