  1. So it failed it's first WOF under my ownership. Typical Honda things. Bushes. Front LCA outer bush on the RHS, and both RTA bushes. Bought the following from Speed Science/Hardrace - Front LCA kit (all 4 bushes) - Front swaybar end links (D-bushes unavailable in 25mm size!) - Front compliance arm bushes - RTA bushes George, being the excellent human that he is let me clag up his hoist for a week. With some help from Dustin (DNG) and Scott (East Tamaki Auto) it's all buttoned up and ready for it's recheck. Feels AMAZING with all the new bushes. Also learned it has a Spoon rigid collar set installed, while I was rummaging around underneath it. Also; Scored some nice clean, unfucked arch liners from Pick a Part. Have since cleaned and gotten rid of all the tar on them, will install this weekend. A few other little pieces. Brent at Doozi in Hamilton organised some showroom plates for me, and a new INTEGRA sticker for the center console. Plates as below, just real stupid nerd/indulgent shit. 20190830_175357-01 by Richard Opie, on Flickr 20190830_175651-01 by Richard Opie, on Flickr Car is looking clean and ok though. Just a few more small jobs and it will be ready for market. Standard suspension is en route but the Stacked! container is having some difficulty with fumigation for the ol' stink bug. Another year of legality. And since all my thread images are poked, here's one so you and I don't forget what she looks like. <3

  6. This morning, we fanged across to Caffeine and Classics, then rolled straight back home, where I had intentions of mowing lawns and doing general yard work. Anyway I started cleaning something in the engine bay. Next thing you know it was 6:30pm and I'd just finished cleaning up - after giving the whole engine bay a bit of a tickle with some cleaning products and a range of brushes and micro fibre cloths. Shit I used included - diluted Simple Green (beware, some people have had this stain alloy), Armor All Multi-Purpose cleaner (this shit is amazing on damn near anything) and Interflon Foam Cleaner (beyond incredible cleaner, kind to plastics and electronics, also a weapon on upholstery). Brushes ranged from a toothbrush, up to a soft dish brush. Start - this is in the battery tray corner, the general filth on the firewall is indicative of all the painted surfaces in the engine bay when I kicked off. DC2R Phone (18)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr No real in-progress shots. I did snap a wee comparison of the old cam cover and the NEW HOTNESS just prior to fitting it up with new seals/gaskets etc. DC2R Phone (19)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr It looked good before right? But how much is the difference when you line it up against a brand newie! DC2R Phone (21)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr Basically the end result. I am aware I need to remove a few painted brackets etc and get them recoated. I've also put wheels in motion to buy a whole swag of OEM fasteners to replace anything a bit tarnished/rusty etc. Mainly M6x16 factory ones in the grey zinc finish. DC2R Phone (22)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr This thing positively glows. It's a thing of beauty. DC2R Phone (23)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr Even the letters have a shine and crispness beyond anything I've ever seen on a B-series. Machined OEM finish! DC2R Phone (26)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr Likely the most boring photo I've ever snapped. But it illustrates the finish on the firewall/paint at the end of the proceedings. Turned out pretty good. It's not perfect, no, but it's definitely up there as far as 20-year old engine bays go. DC2R Phone (27)-Edit by Richard Opie, on Flickr And a parting shot. Pretty chuffed with it all, will carry on with a few more jobs to sort in the bay, and also clean the underside of the bonnet which is quite grubby. Toodle-oo.

  7. Impulse bought KE70 front lip resulted in this, of which I would call a win: 20 mins of cutting and marking and it's sitting pretty good. Just gotta make up some little stainless brackets for the corners, sand, prime, and paint body colour. I'll be painting the bottoms of the guards, and the lower panel to bring them back to life at the same time. I think it gives the car a little more of an aggressive look, and when I drop another 40mm or so out of the front it'll really come into its own and look the part. Time off work is coming up very soon which means I'm able to get across town and have my engine block dipped. Unfortunatley the need for a new phone sets my head rebuild back, but I'm not fussed. I won't be putting the 1G-GE in for quite some time yet, so I'm working more on the car itself. I've been thinking about my auto. I'm not keen to manual swap for a variety of reasons, but the old A42/3 automatics are awful. I had been thinking about adapting an altezza 1G-FE auto to fit, and I think the only hiccup I would encounter is the rear X member. I'm thinking that the late model auto's, especially if sourced from something low kms, would be far smoother. And for the price of them, it would be a far cheaper option than rebuilding what I already have. Let me know if this is a bad idea. Entered in OS Drags too, so hopefully the 1G-E and slushy auto can smash out a sub 30 second run

  8. I made some more engine mounts I fluked the hole location and everything fitting, the stock center stand should still clear everything and work. I'll need to finish trimming the last mount and weld it in @Raizer has ordered me in a couple of carbs and goodies so I'm off to collect them this weekend. I stupidly did a leak down test on the gy6 AFTER assembling it and the valves leak. I'll have a dig through raizers hoard and see if I can swap a head without him noticing

  9. we will be driving the van down, possibly doing a north island victory tour and then a south island welcome home tour depending on how the timing works between packing up here and house finding down there. But definitely keen on a garage fridge/wanker beer/cup of tea tour of the South Island if we have the time.

  10. 2 months later i have all the bits to rebuild the bottom end. the heads are already finished and i have them back. parts, 9 to 1 CR Ross forged pistons (the cunts will not change the value of the parts on the shipping invoice so keep that in mind when deciding to use them or not) eagle H beam rods and ARP rod bolts ARP main cap studs and bolts new genuine Toyota oil pump theres heaps of other shit too but you get the picture. block will now be bored and honed to 88mm. rotating assembly will get balanced and ill get the short block back. then its reassembly time. good days. or maybe not good days. going in to hospital to get back surgery in about a month so that will fuck all progress for a while............... 2019-09-19_07-59-37 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-09-19_07-59-22 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-09-19_07-58-23 by sheepers, on Flickr

  11. And nearly a year later...... Oil leak finally got to the point of Greenpeace protestors chaining themselves around the car..... Finally got around to setting up the electric winch I brought off @HKM400 ages ago, wish I had one of these since day one, engine removal was a breeze! Turned out the diff mount had been rubbing on the sump leaving quite a hole, once again the lada gods smiled as it also made a reasonable job of blocking the hole. With the engine out I modified the sump to have more clearance and TIGed up the hole in time for a trip to the hills. Always fun taking the Niva up into the snow Also surprising that i've put chains on it twice this year, that doubles the number of times its had chains in my ownership!

  12. Decided to get off my arse and install the efi, after the last run to hanmer I got sick of the flat spots and rough running.. Got all the gear out to hook it up. Got this far.. Then realised the injector plugs I grabbed from pickapart 5 years ago were wrong and they're for high impendence injectors, so I need to back out and get some others. Also while I'm out there I need a Nissan vg30 tps for the vg30 tb. I also need to buy an Oxy sensor, an ignitor and ballast resistor for the injectors. Speaking of injectors, still haven't been able to find any info on the denso's I have. 195500-0285 is the code if anyone knows.. Bought a new battery today as mine is about 2007 and doing random slow starts..

  14. So... a change in the place i took this for a WOF meant it had a bit more of a thorough inspection. It didn't fail but he mentioned that some rust in the passengers floor would need attention soon. So some investigation happened. Turned out that hiding under the sound deadening was a little more serious than anticipated. Likely a leaking windscreen caused this. Out with the cutting disc and I had at it! And then glued it all back together Grind, Sand, and Prime - phone was left in the house so no pics except after And finally a renewal of paint and anti-chip coating. A nice tidy up for it.

  15. ... member since 2004 and only now do i get around to making a project build thread for my main oldschool car - what a slacker!!! TBH i thought it had one, but all searching has failed to turn anything up. Anyhow - grab a cuppa for the life of SLEEEK as it has been in the last 19 years. Digging out the old pixels on paper this is how SLEEEK looked when purchased in 1999 ... meet skinny young me at 21 years old Now 1st thing that annoyed me was daily air topup of the firestone wide oval tyres on these volk 3 piece rims.. very loose and wobbly 3 piece rims. So Bridgestone Zona's and some Dunlop W10 tyres made me broke for the next few months.. I also liked clubsport so a day at the track in this was what it needed.. MG Car club sprint at Pukekohe 1999 At this time I met and befriended another celicaholic named Al - he was just prepping a celica for Targa NZ and asked for service crew assistance from one that knew celica's inside and out Amazingly - I now own all 3 celicas that are in this picture - it took 15 years to get them all under my garage roof.

  26. stories from M lyfe. the heater tap started leaking. the heater tap is inside the passengers foot well. like any true M series connoisseur i know it was leaking within seconds of it happening because i smelt it. i knew, instantly, the the M was about to try and fulfill the prophecy of its lineage, and its tradition, and attempt to BHG. but old M masters like myself are made of sterner stuff than that, it'll take a better trick that that old chestnut to bring the prophecy to life. so, i caught it before it had a chance to get hot, no harm done. MS75 heater taps are vacuum operated, incorporate a 90 degree bend in them and just to really make sure there is no way of substituting it with something available its closed with no vacuum. all available vacuum operated taps that i have found are open with no vacuum. there are no taps available that event fit in the space available, let alone have the right vacuum configuration. so ill just have to buy a gates one, cut and weld the vacuum actuator to be on the other side of the lever and put in the engine bay somewhere. if i can stand up for long enough to do that job ill do that tonight. 2019-09-19_07-33-00 by sheepers, on Flickr

  28. Remove LED1, install the LED (front end) of an optocoupler like the 817C's used elsewhere in the cct? Keep the wires short (wisted together is good). Use a soft bias on the Arduino (like the input pullup mode, ~50kOhm). Add 1nF on the output for noise reduction. ???? Profit.

  29. If it's LED1 you're trying to connect to, that LDR idea i had might be easiest. Looks like connecting things to the LED makes that flasher circuit go nuts. I only know that because i built that flasher a a kid, the rest of the circuit is a bit above my pay grade.

  30. Sooo when I was chasing out all the threads I managed to put the wrong pitch M10 tap through one of the bellhousing mount holes. So had to invest in some thread repair kits. OUCH! My wallet. I got an M6 at the same time because there are some stripped threads on the gearbox. ...the gear lever retention plate thing is held down by four M6 bolts and all the holes are stripped.

  32. We’d decided we were going to tackle 42 traverse. Which was a great choice for a shakedown ride imo. Adventure50 handled it quite well, 4t motor is just lazy and loves being held wide open to bounce up obstacles. Did a few jumps, bashed through a bunch of puddles, and succeeded at most hill climbs (let down by lack of rider skill mostly) apart from the really wet slippery clay ones (like picture) due to lack of tyre grip, as the SR241 trail tyres just clogged up. Cleared instantly though once back onto the more solid bits of the trail. relocating the airfilter into the frame was good, as it increased the wading depth. However we still had to carry/float the bikes across as a section of this was mid thigh deep. Even made it up to see some snow only issue on the day was I lost the exhaust nuts -my fault for not double nutting/using lock nuts. And could go for some firmer front springs as it bottoms out fairly easily. / less bent fork tubes might help too. however we only did 42 one way as on the way back Andrews bike broke and we had to walk it out. So I need to go back to ride it both ways again. #cape

  33. So @GuyWithAviators and I impulse decided we needed to go on an adventure, Id wrangled a Friday off work so the date was set. I made a seat just to get by. -hand beaten pan and custom duel density foam, and glued that on. Loaded the bike onto the trailer and shot down to meet Andrew.

  34. So I had a short list of things to sort after the last test. First was to make a more permanent restrictor, before the tape went through the carbs. I did lots of math to work out the area, and made a stainless restrictor, but just fitted it temporarily in case it was wrong. Turns out it doesn't work as good as the tape, so will try again. I also redid the top of the brake pedal, to try get more swing/feel. Seems to be a bit better/good enough. Did a bit more of the wiring/cleaned a bit of it up, and mounted the magic boxes. I'm waiting on some components to arrive from China so I can finish this and the dash. Speaking of dash, I started making a new one, with new switches and shit. Waiting on new warning lights to show up. This is the same shape as the hood. I also made a new front panel. It's made of thicker steel than before, with more bars and more mounts, so should be nice and strong. I also fixed a few other bits and bobs, and adjust a few other items. In testing today I discovered the sprocket is still coming loose, I think it's because the axle was welded together under the sprocket (it broke years ago because there was no center bearing) and is slightly undersized, and the key ways are a bit flogged out. I was going to re-key the axle and sprocket a size bigger to see if it would stop it coming loose, but while doing beach donuts, it snapped the axle. So I'll just make a new axle from scratch out of 4140 center-less ground. Luckily I purchased a 4wd last week, and I sighted this very occurrence as my reason for needing one. We managed to drag the offroader back to the trailer with a jammed rear wheel. My fucking sweet rig, Broken, Aftermath, Shitty vid of today's efforts: Regards, VG.

  35. Yea so there was a wee saga with the engine parts, Trundles rang and said the only crank they had was damaged, so they had only sent the seals, gaskets and bearings. I spent a bit of time trying to find another crank but nothing was available. Plenty of complete engines for too much money, but then what fucking use were all the other parts. So I suggested I send it all back and he got all pissy and said he would find another crank, which he actually did. So we will wait and see what turns up. I have been selling off shit like a demon, I've got 2/3rds of the money to pay for the coating, but I have to wait for some latches I ordered off Ali Express to sort the drawers so I can get it done. In the meantime I have been tidying up the last few things I have to do. I have needed to get some sort of tiedown detail into the deck, but preferably without going any wider, or having them down low and preventing the drawers from opening. I decided to do it this way, which was laborious but reasonably tidy. I can also use the detail as a mount for sides if I need to; I also made something proper for the low range boot to mount too; Might have to start the many jobs I have been neglecting around the house now..

  37. Bit of the old grease on the top of the IDA filter then lower the bonnet gently down, capturing the initial lower outline of where the cut needs to be. I need to get a couple extra bits to complete this like the thin black trim for the hole edge. My original red bonnet will remain mint so that I can chop and change the look at will. I noticed it was vibrating towards the front at 100km therefore I had a good look at it when I got home. The factors glue holding the frame to the skin was separating. Now we pumped a load of Wurth glue in the areas of concern and it all should be sweet after the glue tacks off.

  39. Back from holiday so called Stephen again, very friendly guy. Said he thinks this car might might be the one which the Redcross bought new to raffle off in Wellington. He thinks he should have some kind of paperwork. But it will take a while to look through, it was 40 years ago lol. Ask me to call him again in a couple of weeks. Wife has been sick since we got back so haven't had any time the last few days to work on cars, had the kids play on the driveway so I could have a look at the distributor. Thought maybe the points were stuck. Looks like its oxidized, moved ok. Then the boy sprayed the girl with the hose so I didn't look any further.

  40. So yeah, I still own this. it ended up getting a full Brake rebuild, new fuel tank etc and some other odds and ends. I have been daily driving it along with the EB Civic. It ended up getting a part respray on insurance thanks to a young driver that pulled in front of me causing a crash... luckily I know of a few parts cars so the insurance company happily repaired it its currently waiting on me to clean up the surface rust on the back of the new bumper and fit it.

  41. Progress has been made. well a little anyway. I completed the loom and taped it all up. looks heaps better now. mess before. and after also blanked off the egr port Plan was to weld something there. but after getting all set up found that the argon bottle was empty. so a temporary fix for now. Also cut the heater return line that runs under the turbo right down as the heater leaks anyway so it inst needed and took up to much space. Both that and the EGR delete has opened up allot of space at the back of the intake manifold. Then came time to start the car. Was trying for a while with no luck. laptop showed good trigger signals and ignition and injector test proved everything was working but the car refused to fire. A spray of MAF sensor cleaner into the manifold yielded some sign of life but not enough to get the car running. Add in the timing sitting at an unknown angle and you have a good recipe to set the car on fire. Luckily it wasn't a major and i managed to pat the flames out with a rag, but with images of another video i have seen of an mx5 owner unable to extinguish a fire in similar circumstances i decided this was not the way to go. I then remembered the car has not had any fuel put into it since around the july 2017 update so maybe time to drain the fuel tank and put some fresh fuel in. so i drained the tank. Quite easy to do when i can just switch the pump on with the laptop connected. so the tank drained and i switched the pump off as soon as i heard the tone change, put in some fresh 98 and turned the key to prime the pump. The pump didn't sound right. Tried a couple more times and no joy. Bugger fuel pump had crapped itself. It is the factory starion pump so it was due for replacement. So i replaced it with a high volume fuel miser pump. I was going to run a bosch 044 but the price was right for this pump and it was rated for a turbo application. So new pump fitted and it primed up nicely so it was again time to start the car. I turned it over and it was trying but pretty reluctant. it finally fired and proceeded the run like a hairy arse. A few more goes at running the engine i noticed the fuel table was only moving along the horizontal axis. No MAP. Checked settings and no internal MAP turned on. WTF i thought and turned map on in analog input 5. Straight to an error reading. Shit maybe it was meant to be on 4. Nope no reading. Double checked book and yep. meant to be on 5. Back on and attempt to calibrate. Link says NO. Shit had me thinking and frustrated a little. Then remembered i had encountered this before. After a firmware update the fault settings for the analog inputs changes to weird values. I should have picked this up straight away as i had just previously had to change the ECT values for the same reason. Now with values set correctly it let me calibrate the MAP sensor. Success! Now to run this car. it started less reluctantly and ran long enough for me to adjust the dizzy to get the timing somewhere near where it needs to be. Set timing by ear and let car run. then after around 20 seconds rev limiter initiates and car dies. WTF again. it was just idling. Repeat about for times. Start getting mad. Check trigger settings. Trigger 2 set for 4x cam. cool. trigger 1 set for 1x crank. O.. it is running off the cam so kinda suprised it ran at all. May also explain mixture leanness possibly? wasn't sure. At this stage i thought fuck it. I had a file for the car saved from when i knew it actually ran. so instead of mucking around i just loaded the old settings in and went from there. and what do you know the car ran. and kept running. YAY!! So today i had to get the car to my work which is around 15km. And had to do it by driving it. Loaded the bike in the back. filled the water and let it run for a bit and set the timing with a light. was only 4 degrees out. Only started and ran on 3 cylinders. O well prob a fouled plug. Though i better take the laptop so plugged it in and off i went. A few minutes up the road i noticed the car was cruising very lean, like 16.5:1 lean. Still on 3 cylinders i made it to a BP. topped up with some fuel and then Highlighted the bottom half of the fuel map and page upped until i was satisfied i would be a safer mixture. fired it back up and set off again. still on 3 cylinders and realizing i had forgotten to inflate the tires at the BP which were at 10psi. haha O well. at least the air fuel looked allot better. As i was entering a 100k zone the last cylinder joined us. Better late than never aye. car felt pretty smooth now. wanted to give it some but balloon tires and low psi felt kinda dodgy. Made it out to work. Put air in the tires. unloaded shit and decided to go up the road. With eyes on the o2 reading and kinda watching the road i lent on it a bit. air/fuel ratios looked acceptable so i lent on it some more. Wow. this is the first time boosting it since the bigger throttle body was put on. it has made a big difference to turbo response from what i can remember. And car actually goes really well. Still only running 9-10psi. with the speedo climbing faster than i think it ever has i decided that was enough fun for the day and put the car away in the workshop. I still need to take it out for a good tuning run anyway. So Basically the car drives but in a way i haven't made much progress. Just went backwards and now back to where i was before, with a little improvement. haha and the concludes today's long winded story. Thanks for reading.

  43. Had a generally good run out of the Niva recently, not that it really does much work, spends most of its life in the shed and then gets rolled out for weekends away. Went for a drive down south Canterbury way and found another Niva hiding away in daily use. Also had a look around a few of the high country valleys over winter: After this trip on rough river stones the steering idler once again slogged out, upon measure up I found the shaft is slightly undersize, that explains years of rapidly wearing out bushes! A quick call to a supplier and I had some nylatron through the lathe with much less clearance. And of course something big had to happen, on checking the car over before a trip I found a missing washer and screw in the intake, the screw was caught in the carb throat, the washer no where to be seen..... After trying the obvious, I made the call to strip the head in expectation of a gouged bore, but no, nothing seen but a few divots in the head and piston, it appears the washer made it to freedom via a brief beating in #4, once again, the gods seem to smile on me! Moving forward the Niva will keep hanging out in the shed with occasional weekends out, but come christmas improvements will slow...... This weekend I picked up part A of my legit black plated new project (cheers Greg!) while a few OS'ers know about my excitement, i'll wait till I pick it up to start the build thread, for now here's a teaser: And for those that don't identify as a drivetrain Barry....

  44. Development has slowed, but the Niva is driving well, even completing a few road trips. Fuel economy was a tad crap, but performance has been satisfactory, I had the wideband hooked up the majority of the trips and the results are pleasing, while still a bit rich, it never leaned out under full power, for now that will have to do! I recently returned from Jackson Bay via the west coast, here's a few pics, such a nice place to travel through. On the way I called in to catch up with a good mate, TCGC. Found some long straight (bumpy) roads Beaches Surf was a bit lousy On the engine fixing side I had a fellow OSer 3d print some intake trumpets, they look the part, I just need to tidy them up a tad, After 2000km of worry-free motoring something had to give, most likely picked up some British virus near Timaru and now sports a large oil leak from around the sump, i'll have to explore further, so for now she's having a rest as I focus on work.

  45. We set off on Targa and had a great time - Al's 3 celica liftbacks plus my one on a rally.(4th one pictured below is now @Leeky1 's) and SLEEEK got very very grubby This Targa sealed a great partnership that had me servicing/co-driving for the next 10 years Now brakes were a bit dodgy after having covered 2200Km during Targa so these were all overhauled and within months were given the ultimate test... Whangarei Street Race in the year 2000!! Once the safety aspect of this circuit was sorted(hours of delays) we got out there and had some great fun. Great fun - the brakes were great but the engine wasn't so great with many blue smokes escaping from rooted rings after the event on the drive home. More clubsport - this time a motorkhana meant the engine really didnt like me and was using more oil than petrol. And ... another celica coupe was purchased that meant SLEEEK was garaged for a couple of years while i played with the white one
