  1. Welcome back viewers to yet another ever so thrilling update on the old Huddyson. Sitting here and looking back over the last few years I must scratch my head and ask where has all that time gone. I really did believe it would of been driveable by now - road legal or not legal. Life has its way of derailing such grand time frames as im sure you all are aware and the fact that even though the parts im using may not be the most expensive out there they sure dont come cheap. To paraphrase Oedipus, Hamlet, Lear, and all those guys, "I wish I had known this some time ago." Everything was such a damned nice idea when it was an idea yet as with everything How you look at it is pretty much how you'll see it I guess. And looking at it I can see the old gal ride low n slow down the street fast n loud on the highways everytime im out working on the old beast. God i got a tad philosophical there for a moment... what are they adding to the water around these parts. /twitch Enough of that nonsense. let start the normal barrage of images and brief explanations. Back floor all patched up over four link brackets. Holes added for access & removal of the top bars bolts. Sparks and smoke flying up front as the Trans cover was all made up like a big jigsaw. To help pull the drivers side floor up the brake boosters cover has been incorporated onto the trans cover to add rigidity. Since the brakes are all tucked away under the floor and me being a bit of a lazy sod im using a remote reservoir. The brake pedal was a bit of a sod that took up a heap of time. Due to the floors sloping angle and other factors we couldn't do a normal pivoting bar as the inside push rod where you stand would be pointing towards the floor. So a duel/tandem lever was made up. its somewhere between 4:1 and 5:1 ratio. Still got to get the adjustable top links. but tested with a bit of bar and have heaps of travel for the booster. Grease nipples all over the place. Machined up brass bushes and ya its solid as. Have to get the actual pedal and the other lever bar it connects to tested still. Moving on to smaller jobs now. Power steering. As i have mentioned I think some time ago im using a PSC setup made for rock-crawlers. So if its powerful enough to drive and survive the crazy setups they have it should be fine for my setup. Now I didnt want to take away from the finned engine dress-up stuff when you open the hood. So a low mount bracket was fabbed up. The little pump has a heap of adjustment, lines up nicely with the other pulleys and is tucked nice and low that will not only keep it out of eye sight but since the pump is gravity feed from the reservoir that will be mounted up by the radiator it will have ample full as well. Mounted up the trans cooler up front of the radiator after I drilled a few holes and added grommets for the hoses. Should be hidden away enough not to be noticed. Got the cad skills out again to design up the gas tank. Its about 19Gallons/72litres. The tail pipes are rather close together so the plan is cut a hole in the trunks floor and have half the tank through this and then the other half taking up much of the trunks floor space. Baffles will also add bracing for those times I may throw heavy loads like tires ontop of it. The bottom should be flush or just tucked up with the bottom of the chassis whilst the top will come nearly up to the trunks lip/bottom of the door. So it shouldn't be a hindrance or noticeable. One end is slightly deeper for the pump and sender. Josh and the guys at Apex in Oamaru cut n folded it up. Top guys with some great kit that I highly recommend. They also made up that Hudson logo for a bit of fun what was nice of them and chucked it in. Until I figure out what to do with it I plan to use it as a stencil to tag a few things around the garage. \,,/(-.-)\m/ On a bit of a separate note the missus has taken up slinging a bit of one shot paint of late. Hell yeah I say. Im more than happy to buy the brushes, paints and what ever if it means I can get some lines laid down on pretty much what ever I want. I think she is busting it out but naturally I may be a tad one eyed, biased and not the best judge in the matter. Take a look any way. Some panels up near the top of below pic in my garage. Cooler to go with her Morrie Door she made up for Flockie on an old 40s Ford pickup door. And of course hand bags... she has a thing for handbags.

  2. Made a bit of a drive to raglan so we could go for a surf. Made for a brilliant cruise, really couldn’t be happier, would be nice to put a lower 5th gear in it for cruising but I’m not to fussed. Also made sure to take the piss a bit with the neons

  3. So i got my hands on some plus 15 back -20 main bearings. Thanks to Ford and their below average machining they mis machined the main tunnel on some of their blocks and had to come up with a solution of +15 back bearing to take up the slack. These can be challenging to get at times. So then I mount and measured them so I had a size to machine the crank too. Got the crank dialed in the crank grinder. Start to bring the wheel in and just touch the journal and you can see the .002 thou wear. The grinder has just started to clean up the left side and a bit in the middle. Once it's all ground we put it into this modified wood lathe we use for polishing.

  6. @Nominal mentioned me in Spam the other day, and i had actually been thinking how it was just rusting way, again... About time for an update from @azzurro - probably rusting away again. ___ Its pretty much been sat in this barn since my last post a year ago, except for when the barn was used for a wedding and it got pushed outside - groom was italian and stoked with it, and apparently it was used as a prop and is in some of the wedding photos, lol Its always been a bit of a pig to start when its been sitting for more than a day or two (first pop otherwise) as the fuel pump takes a long time to suck gas up from the tank, and the slightly flat battery wouldn't have lasted. It was also running a bit flat/missy when i put it away. I cranked it for a bit hoping for a miracle, but before i flattened the battery I pulled the carb top off to fill the bowl with gas, but it had a lot of brown sludge in the bowl so took the whole thing off and gave it a quick dismantle on the ute tail gate. Also adjusted the linkage to get full secondary opening, and with some gas in the bowl it fired up pretty much straight away A quick check of the brakes, lights and etc, and swapped spots with the ute, patted the resident donkey, and drove it home no worries at all. Its such a lush cruiser, its supposed to have 85 series tyres so its pulling 3500 rpm in 4th at 100, so while its more than happy there, its nicer to take it easy. However, it sounds great with a hole in the exhaust - the secondary opening fully has also given it a bit more top end howl too, and the small 6 is so smooth. Drive reminded me of a few small things I had on my list that need doing for a WoF - Ill install an electric fuel pump as per the utes set up (i bought two for this reason) - the exhaust needs replacing between the manifold and the rear door - i backed into the rear bumper with my old van and so i need to check out the spare one - check the ignition timing - so far has been done by guessing - there are no timing marks on the engine (they are on the flywheel requiring timing to be set with the engine running on a stand - what the flip), OR, you need a special tool. Well this NOS bad boy turned up on trademe for $15 so i bought it NOW. Looks like a precision tool, but it kinda jams between the water pump and timing chain case, and then the hole in the blue part fits over a bolt and dangles over the crankwheel. More fiddling to follow

  7. Adventure GN'd today with the wife. Hit 100 2 up no worries, very surprised. Don't expect to accelerate up hills but surprisingly capable for what it is

  8. So first driving impressions were ‘who the hell thought it would be a good idea to put this much power to the front wheels’ but I’m very happy with not going any bigger of a turbo as it seems to have the power right where I want. It has great low end torque and a decent top end aswell. Anyhow, the car was running so good and even though I never really intended to build the car for it the last night speed drag was were coming up. There were import things to do like change the engine oil and get some semi slicks mounted up. But I did also have a bunch of left over exhaust pipe and a spare v band so it would be silly not to make a side pipe first? don’t worry I finished welding it and then gave it a bit of exhaust wrap and paint. installing it at the drags cause I didn’t need any attention from the police. had a tonne of fun, only managed 4 runs and blew a tire on the last run. First time ever drag racing so times were nothing special (14.6 was my best and I missed a gear) but I’m already looking forward to next season night speed wars.

  9. Car was closer to driveable, clutch feels great apart from it doesn’t go all the way to the floor but the tune was a bit of an issue the car would surge a bit from 3 - 4K rpm. Got a friend to log it as I drove around the block, did a little pull and lost power he said I was making 18psi then nothing almost like the map sensor had blown. Got back to the driveway thinking the worst, turns out I’m just a muppets and couldn’t do a hose clamp up tight enough. With this done we were able to send some of the logs off to some people overseas who did some wizardry and came back with the first solid tune that I am running and the car drives awesome! After this I did some of the usual spanner checks as well as changing the gearbox oil and checking fluids.

  10. I had been looking for a 2 wheeled project for a while and this came up for sale cheap on Trademe. It was in Nelson but I was heading to Blenheim end of March/start of June. A fellow Datsun club member (and may be on OS too) picked up and stored for me before I was able to mish up to get it. Picked up over Queens birthday weekend and got it home. Is missing quite a few bits but hopefully shouldn't be hard to track those down.

  11. Paint filters must be much bigger holes no? Because paint is much thicker than coffee. My recolection was it was a vert slow process getting used motor oil to pass through one.

  12. A week later I had a look over it and my flatmate was adament we should try and start it. Removed fuel tank which was full of rusty shit, it had been quite sometime since this was last running... changed gear oil, cleaned up spark plug, topped up oil tank and fed some fuel to the carb. Kicked her over and fired up on the second go! Here's a short vid, excuse the laughing.... As you can see very smoky... the exhaust was only secured by one bolt and previous owner had used some tie wire to hold the rest of it up.. attempted to fit a second bolt but hole was stripped... lame. Here's the crap that I shook out of the fuel tank... have currently got it filled up with Metal Rescue to remove what's left of the rust. It's been sitting for about a week so will empty it soon and see what it looks like.

  13. yeh, cams in this have over 5mm/4mm - in/ex lift at tdc. Chances are it wouldn't even idle on a single throttle setup

  17. I invited young Sparky over to my place to ride the lead and see if it's actually slow, or if im too fat. It's just slow. So me and Sparky spent hours this weekend pulling the Lead to pieces, clean up the carb, burn out the exhaust, clean the blocked jets and put in a new plug (the old one was gapped to 0.15mm instead of the 0.6-0.7 Honda recommends) Put it all back together and took it for a hoon and guess what!? It's slower/the same oh well, time to pull the head i guess

  18. Chuur, I'd recommend having something legit-ish. If anyone asks, you're just nipping down the road to the runoff.

  20. Diesel RAV we have at work does this. We almost invariably have to top it up between services. The check engine light often starts to flick on with about 2000 km to go till the next scheduled service.

  21. I like this topic.. I replaced a shit load in ozz when I worked their at a 4x4 shop We tried all sorts of stuff to make them hold together. dawes valve to take the boost control away from the ECU add more oil shorten the dip stick to increase sump capacity Block the god awful EGR off Replace MAF to stop the over fuel issue. nice big turbo back exhaust If you drove one with a boost gauge and pyro you might go ok and have no issues. but they still went bang. Small motor big truck... boy sent to do a mans job kinda deal.

  22. i started having a play with the EPS..i stripped it down to the basic unit. here it is just mounted up with pedal box in and just 2 bolts ysing the suzuki steering mount.( pretty good really for a Japanese part and 2003 tech in 76 car) the motor and gears hung down pretty low so i pulled ut a part to see if i can tuen5 the motor and gear drive 180 being just 2 bolts made ut easy to flip 180 so ghe motor is now on top of the unit....but the wire from the motor would reach the ecu for the EPS so i made a small bracket to move it off to one side then bolted it back up to see and all in all very happy...it now buts the motor up under the dash.....so thats the 1st part of the mounted sorted.

  23. Threw in all new wheel bearings into the hubs. Converted the steering bearings to tapered bearing with a kit from 4 into 1. Then made a start on assembling the motor. Reassemble the gearbox first, cleaned everything and check it ran through the gears before closing the cases with Yamabond. We’ve noticed that one of the pistons has stuck rings, looks like it got hot at some point. Which is probably the reason it got parked up in the first place. Will have to order new rings and pistons. It was already on 0.5 so will probably go 0.75 oversized this time. Looks like the oil pump plunger has a lot of scoring on it, so will be rebuilding it to make sure oil pressure is good. Thinking that we will give the freshly vapour blasted alloy a coat of 2k matt clear keep it fresh.

  24. Finished assembly and took it for its maiden voyage around the block. Acceleration is pretty average but once it gets into top gear it goes pretty good. Need to adjust idle as once warm it wants to stall

  25. High performance! dunno, i think they started using it after shifting production to china. maybe it means high compression as i would imagine theres a low comp one for 3rd world fuel

  28. Made some of the thing Turns out I basically replicated my roundtheworld bicycle racks. I didn't intend that, but it's a strong design and I'm using bicycle panniers, so I guess it makes sense. Another hoop at the top seat level at the rear will tie it all together. I figure I will extend that out to the stop light like the factory one. Top rails are at seat height so I can strap something flat clear across the panniers and seat. Pillion seating is not impeded in any way. It's pretty light. Speaking of lights. Obviously I will need to move the indicators. Probably I will tie them into the rear section of the rack. Have not looked at the wiring yet, but guarantee there's not enough slack to do that.

  29. Really fun weekend at the Kaspa Transmissions CAR-nival. It's a 3 day track meet with cruising, drags, drift, burnouts and racing. The drag racing was super fun. The car was hooking up perfectly and I managed to win the drag racing tournament in the Naturally Aspirated class!! I was up against some tough competition in the form of a 300KW Holden Commodore, and 396ci big block Holden Premier and another big block HQ Holden. I also went up against a 323, Intgra Type R and an RX7 but that wasn't really a fair fight. I was quite surprised that I managed to beat the big block chevs, I guess it was just down to how light my wagon is and how well it hooks up. Here is a video of all of my runs, I went undefeated 7-0 nd they had a sweet as trophy, I also won best engine bay but they didn't have the trophy there so they will send it out to me. Had a real blast hooning around the track. Went a bit too hard on the first day and wore out my brake pads. It was a total nightmare trying to find some Wilwood race pads at 4:30pm on a Friday in Taupo. None of the brake shops down there had any so I had to call around my friends and found one of them who had a close enough match, so I had to drive out to his place with pretty much no brakes and swap some pads over. In the morning I had to go get the rotors skimmed. The petrol stations loved me down there. The Avenger is pretty good on gas when you are on the road, but it chews through the gas on the track. 30. Can you tow a car with no WOF or registration behind a car? Or does this come into a trailer category and you need WOF & registration? Scenario. Work is having a track day at Ruapuna Raceway, 10min from my house. To Hire a trailer for the day is $250. Just looking for other options.

  31. Completed the 57sc Sump Model. Moving onto the pattern making designs now. These should be a lot easier than the crankcase! Casting version with machine allowance and shrinkage compensation First cut of roughly what the sand cores would look like.

  32. What I have done with my ramps before is jack the car up and drop it onto the ramps. Easier than stands, and you can drive off them afterwards. Bugger using bits of firewood though lol. When you said "wood as ramps" I thought you meant planks of wood laid on top of each other. Bits of cut up pallet is mint for that (and awesome for getting jacks under low cars for free)

  33. So the car was running but the clutch felt horrible trying to get it in and out of the driveway, combine with a bunch of mods that hadn’t really been accounted for in any sort of tune the car was not drive able. I was pretty frustrated to say the least so I bit the bullet and ordered a kit online that is designed to mount a van style clutch Mc under the dash. I never really took any photos of it installed but it ran for a little (a couple laps of the block) then when I tried to bleed it some more the mc blew a seal, I ordered a new one but either it was different or possibly a different brand I have managed to make it work but it was binding up near the far end of the pedal travel so I put a stop in. As currently this is working but I’m tempted to fiddle with this again at a later date. Anyhow I needed to stop annoying the neighbors and I bought all the stuff to make an exhaust so long ago so I set to work.

  34. So the car was running, not good (needed a tune to manage those big ass injectors) but was back to fixing and problem solving. I never knew how brilliant having some sheet metal and a weldering was, bit of Pajero bonnet and utilising some cardboard aided design I managed to make a catch can holder added some textured paint and installed. It still needs the return to the intake for cert but for now it’s just breathing to atmosphere. Also my first radiator was leaking and it was from a mk1 so I had to try and source a new one. Turned out to be difficult but I got one similar because we had already raided partsmasters rad hoses and have it all positioned perfectly.

  35. With the engine and Intercooler in place we were able to make a plan with how the boost piping would be run. Trying the keep everything as cheap as possible we used a couple old silicon pieces we had lying around as well as shooting across town to the mount shop to get the last little bits and pieces. A lovely guy whos name eludes me offered to help for a box of beers was able to help weld some bungs on for my diverter valve as i had no hope in hell of welding alloy.

  36. After all this I ended up never being able to get the megasquirt to be reliable, so a friend had a kjet setup which we put on, it ran awesome and i drove it like that for a couple of years. Did little bits and pieces including suspension and wheels. just drove it everywhere

  37. This will probably be my last interesting post for a while. Will be moving to California in a month to build space stuff. Visa came through today after months of paperwork! So good! So making parts will slow down, but hopefully CAD work will speed up! Anyway, these are spring hangers and a trunion hanger CNCd from 4140. Having a mill in your shed is key to building shiny stuff!

  38. Haven't really done a lot with this lately. A while back I fitted a single side draft carb to it (Weber 40 DCOE). Have been fiddling with jet sizes and watching the wideband, but still haven't got it right. Will probably need to cough up some money and get someone who knows what they are doing to look at it. A lot better then it was to begin with though. Sorry for the potato pics, will find a better camera some time. Had a bit of a wiring tidy up, not motivated to do a full wire tuck but have re-routed and hidden some to make it look a bit better. Did a grass khana with it a few weeks back too, was a lot more competitive then I was expecting.

  39. Full of enthusiasm I was excited to get this up and running again. Got the bike raised up and sitting at a nice workable height to remove the cylinder so I could repair threads for the exhaust. Got it apart super easy and attempted to drill and tap the bolt holes from m8x1.25 to m10x1.25. Got one hole done and was looking pretty good. Drilled out second hole but my tap just didn't want to start cutting... I tried and I tried and nothing... even put the tap in my drill and went slowly to see if that would start it off but nope.... swapped to m10x1.5 tap to start the thread which appeared to work. Swapped back to the fine thread tap and attempted again. When disaster struck.... the casting cracked... I was so gutted. It was all going so well!! A mate is going to attempt a repair but we'll see how that goes...
