  2. So I picked up this e33a galant half a year ago with intentions to fix it up and flick it on. Then the end of year break up drinks resulted in it ending up ass end into a moxy dump truck hahaha whoops. But because of this it’s a write off so plan is to put the DOHC 4G63 into the little mirage! Gonna see how it goes bolting up to the supershift but I suspect with triple the factory power up its date it won’t last long. So yesterday I pillaged motor, box, ecu, loom etc from the galant. Probably will end up running the 5 speed because I will run the brakes from the galant in the mirage so will use complete front hubs so won’t have to dick around mating them up to mirage ones which are quite different. And also means I can use original driveshafts too hopefully if they aren’t too long. But yeah that’s the next stage in this little critters life. Don’t see it happening at a rapid pace but would like to have it done and certed by the end of the year.

  3. Awhile back I picked up a pair of Slam Specialties RE6s for the back and set about drawing some circles on the computer and getting them laser cut, then I countersunk some holes into them so they can be bolted to the rear arms via the two threads you can see sticking out below I loosely put the diff back in the car today and tricked Dave into coming around by promising him a swim. Put one of the original 13in wheels on it and mounted the bag to the lower arm then dicked around with bits of wood as spacers to work out how tall the cups for the top mounts were going to need to be. Came up with a number but turns out the tube I purchased is too small in diameter to fit over the upper springs perch - must have been holding the wrong end of the ruler or something. Anyway will come up with a work around tomorrow. I won't be running the 13s, I've got some 14in steels from a W108 Mercedes which run the (IMO) better looking single piece hubcap apposed to the 2 piece items that 13in rims run, but the 14s don't have tyres on them so for measuring purposes the 13s will have to suffice etc. will muck around with it some more tomorrow.

  5. I made an object with no real purpose: It uses old plumbing from my house renovation, a leftover sink plug, a bit of decking timber, leftover varnish that Barry really should have thrown out etc. I somehow managed to fit the mechanism from a dimmer inside that bowl part and connect it to the red valve knob, but the connection is flimsy due to my first attempt failing. The first kid to use it will break it. I'm giving this creation to my brother as a gift, to take up space in his house and make his wife complain. I have learnt a bit from making it, which will allow me to do a better job when I make myself something similar. =)

  6. Aaand the engine is now self supporting. It sank a couple mm. I wan't sure if it was resting on the rack, but no, I can slide a thick bit of card between them. I'll be notching the sump, eventually, to get some more clearance off the rack.

  7. shot to @nvmyvl for the section of box. my stubs where a little to big for the inside of it so i gave old @Geophy a call and asked if he had a lathe close by. turns out it was only just down the road from his home, so across town i went. as you see here the shaft it to large for the hole (thats what she said) his big machine, it ford the stuff to make swarf one done, one more to go yeah ill weld that in. now that its welded in i shull drill down and plug well this bitch as well all done. thing keeps on popping the multi box fuse, but that im not going to worry about as i know its getting all the heat in it. things bloody smoking hot which im happy about so im currently waiting for it to cool down so i wont set anything on fire while it rest on my bench at the other end. i also got to hot so i went to mcds and got a double strawberry sunday. so good.

  8. Got rolled by the 5-0 last night. Pulled over for a random rego check / check Vest patches to see if I was in a gang / ask why the back of it was covered in rubber. I got sent home for not having a working brake light or indicators and to find another mode of transport till they work. I did say indicators weren’t a requirement, but we mutually decided agreeing with him was a better choice due to missing a other few basic compulsory items (horn - mud guards - all the wiring for the brake lights - a working speedo etc) and as he said, I would much rather ride it home than have to push it home and aquire a sticker. Dude was a GC though. He found tough guy patches and small bike funny. Might be time for Chaly v2.

  10. Kia Ora, I decided to pull the diff apart a couple of months ago is it was 5 star manky and the rubber bush on the pivot rod and boot that joins the two halves were perished. If you ever hear of anyone saying they're going to pull apart a Mercedes swing axle stop them immediately; they're the biggest pain in the ass to take apart and an even larger one to get back together. Way back when I got the car I put an order through to Pelican parts and brought a load of new seals and bearings (along with shocks and bushes etc). I raided this stash for a new pinion seal. The pinion nut on these is some stupid castle nut thing, which the Special Mercedes tool for costs something like $120 from the states, flagging that idea I picked up one of these from Aliexpress for approximately $7, it's for removing some motorcycle clutch or something but it just so happens to be the right size and did the job, fingers and toes are crossed that the preload on the pinion bearing is right, I think it's close enough. the bearings inside all looked ok. Regreased everything and smushed it back together with some new bits, it's now far tidier - but hasn't gotten any lighter.

  12. Captivated my nuts Screwed all the brakes back together Attached the clutch linkage Pulled the manifolds and tightened everything up, put some gaskets in on the flanges. Ordered the wrong choke lever. Not a major as it's not necessary, but looks good. Let out my inner Barry Cheap fix eh I have some steel that would have done the job, but this is funnier and will give someone a lol wat moment years from now Anyway. I bolted it all together. Remembered how to prime an SU fuel pump, started it up, and tuned it enough for a slow idle when hot. A bunch of red liquid spat out of the water jacket gaskets, but this seems to have sealed itself. Exhaust downpipe flange needs to be at a slightly different angle for a gas tight fit. Seems to be really hot. The airfilter backing plates get almost too hot to touch after a few minutes idling with the bonnet up, distributor is also hot but expected (but not ideal as sidevalves kill electronic ignition due to the exhaust valves being directly under it). If anything it should be set up running rich, who knows what the timing is. TL:DR It starts and idles but I need to actually tune it, laptop died a while ago so need another for wideband tuning, but will fettle with SU tuning tools and vac gauges for now. I have a heatshield that came with the set up but is a pita to use as it blocks the manifold studs

  13. Oh lols. The needle had popped the clip up when I put the carb back together earlier so it was just jumping round doing its own thing. Got it sorted and happy idle/shed nangs again. Seems alot more rev happy now too. Will wait for daylight tomorrow for more test n tune

  14. Did I mention the starter Bendix wasn't returning. Stripped it down, cleaned it up, and ran a builders pencil over the threads. Works ok now. More barrying of a carb choke actuator bolt into a throttle cable bolt. Just needed to spin it down in the lathe eh Looks the part Also popped the air filters on. These did come with wire mesh media in them. I replaced these with some doughnuts cut from a kwasaki ninja foam filter. Starts up with a little choke from cold, and starts easy warm. Revs up nicely. I think it's going to be a good one. Cut the exhaust up again to correct some alignment issues at the vband flange. Goes together much nicer now and sounds alot smoother (waste of time tuning with exhaust leaks) Then something went wrong. Smoke started coming out of the generator, ign lamp would go off when running but come on with the key removed. Looks like the points in the voltage regulator/control box (yup more Lucas points) stuck I ran some paper between them and it's ok again. I had to do that last time it had sat for a while too. An entire new loom in in my future, maybe I'll get a dynameter fake generator instead and do away with the control box all together. Anyway Next on the list is the brakes One wheel was stuck. Just some rust on the shoes, I cleaned it up and will vacuum bleed the system later

  15. did a bit more. cut open the sill to have a look at the inner piece which was a bit rusty so i cut it out and made a new bit. 2019-01-05_03-17-08 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-01-05_03-17-43 by sheepers, on Flickr then it was on to making a new outer skin. i cut the whole bottom off and just made one patch to make life easier. i made the arch lip and welded it on first, then stitched it all in. 2019-01-05_03-17-29 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-01-05_03-17-52 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-01-05_03-17-58 by sheepers, on Flickr still got a few little bits to do but its nearly finished. tomorrow is my 45th birthday so im not sure if ill work on it tomorrow or not.

  17. Temporarily installed this old Aquamist set up I got off Adoom ages ago, receipt says he bought it 10 years ago so is the older type pump. I just wanted to see what kind of effect it would have, the kit came with 0.5mm, 0.6mm and 0.7mm jets which looks to be about 160cc - 375cc. Since it just temporary I just used an old antifreeze bottle to hold the fluid and ran the pump etc under the drivers seat, I plan to mount it all in the back but I need to get some more 4mm ptfe hose. With the smallest jet and straight water it didn't seem to make much difference, so I went straight to the 0.7mm jet and about 30% meth. It really makes a difference, it pulls much better in the top end when previously it felt like it wasn't getting enough fuel. So I'll find a supplier of the tube and install it properly, I'm wondering about getting a t-piece and seeing if it would work with two jets maybe pre-turbo with the really small jet. You can get up to 1.2mm which will flow 700cc's but why not just run two of the current jets?

  18. Yeah, @Chris.QCR been looking on Ali at tiny indicators and that and gonna do some re packaging of the wiring / under seat area and put a horn / basics under there. Probably micro switches hidden somewhere for them / hidden wiring. id say a good 90% of our riding is done in the cbd or urban populated areas. So may aswell have less to get stung on. 19. Today's job was to take out the old fuel tank and put in the new one. Looks like I need an adapter hose for the filler pipe as the old one had a flange with screws. Not a big deal. The old tank was ok but I wanted a larger capacity for getting further from home before breaking down.

  21. Whilst the commer is off the road the daily driver duties are being carried out by the Standard 10. It was a barn find which didnt take much to get roadworthy. I have swapped the diff centre for a herald and it is much more user friendly. Took it from 4.5:1 to 4.1. It has been bulletproof so far and I love it. When I am done with the commer Ill tart the standard up. It sways on the road over 50mph and is gutless so Ill target that. It has a 946cc currently but I have a 1200 big block on the bench which is a bolt in swap.

Hopefully tomorrow i will pay a visit to @nvmyvl and grab the 50x50 for the axle. also brought four 14 inch steelies from @Geophy for 30 bucks and i got my white wall tyres back from @MRWEST after lending them to him about 2 years ago so he could get a cert on his imp. so good is good. hell yeah

  24. despite spending half the day fucking around with the stupid washing machine i got some more done. i didnt take and "before" pictures which i really should have, oh well, cant do anything about it now. so i cut the rusty bits off the outer skin and reveled the inner which was in pretty good shape. one hole but the rest cleaned up with a bit of grinding. made a patch for the inner skin and glued it in. i also made a new lip for the inner skin because it was a bit fucked and the spot welds were a bit fucked as well. 2019-01-04_05-46-21 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-01-04_05-45-55 by sheepers, on Flickr made a new bit for the bottom corner of the inner skin. 2019-01-04_05-46-04 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-01-04_05-46-13 by sheepers, on Flickr then i made the patches for the outer skin. the MS75 has a 45 degree angle bit on the lip so i made that on the bench and welded it up before welding the patch to the car. its way easier that way. 2019-01-04_05-46-40 by sheepers, on Flickr 2019-01-04_05-45-45 by sheepers, on Flickr as usual i didnt take enough photos. so tomorrow ive got to finish that little triangle bit and some small patches in the bottom of the sill then the rust is finished except for the boot floor.

  25. So the engine bay thing kind of took off. Some egging on by a certain lanky Auckland member... Motor out. 20181216_135918 by Richard Opie, on Flickr You can see, there's multiple useless holes in the firewall. These include, but are not restricted to the original heater inlet/outlet, brake booster, loom, aircon and all the other weird shit that I don't need anymore. Same goes for the brackets on the firewall. So what next? KP61 Phone-1 by Richard Opie, on Flickr Trekked down to see @oftensideways with the KP in tow. For those of you who don't know Sean, he's a freakin wizard, and a top bloke to boot. Someone I am privileged to consider among my mates. He'd agreed to weld up the engine bay for me, and with Bex being away visiting her family over the break it was a great excuse for me to get out of the house and go for a bit of a drive. KP61 Phone-2 by Richard Opie, on Flickr I didn't really get many shots in progress, but here's what the firewall looked like when it was time to load up and hit the road (the next day, even!). All of the large holes have been filled with steel patches. MIG'd in place then TIG welded to finish. The little stuff with captive nuts on the other side have been filled by MIG welding. Then a bunch of hammer and dolly work to get the shape back. And so we took off home. Straight into @sheepers shed... as I said, this all happened a bit quicker than I am used to. KP61 Phone-3 by Richard Opie, on Flickr Front off, subframe and suspension out. Then onto the labourious job of prepping for paint. KP61 Phone-4 by Richard Opie, on Flickr This is after the initial prep work for a coat of high build primer. You'll note the brake line holes and etc in the inner guards have also been filled. Thought it was a good idea while I was down at Seans to do it once and properly. This first prep really started to reveal just how good the job Sean did was. High spots at an absolute minimum - which is great, as these are way harder to fix than low spots, for obvious reasons. KP61 Phone-5 by Richard Opie, on Flickr Sheepers sprayed the first coat of primer on the bay that same night. Was a fairly long day, but super cool nonetheless to see an inkling of what the final product was going to be like while the primer was still wet. Promising. Of course, lots, and lots, and lots of sanding still to come... KP61 Phone-6 by Richard Opie, on Flickr This is after a wet sand. A whole days worth of wet sanding. You can see all the red spot filler on the firewall. This is ALL WE NEEDED TO FILL IN. Let that sink in for a while. After the amount of welding heat and bashing that had gone into the firewall, the requirement to crack out the bog was slim to nil in the end. That's how damn good Sean is. Regardless of how good it was, I ended up with trench-hands from being in wet gloves all day, which was equal parts gross and hilarious. But then the second coat of primer went on... KP61 Phone-7 by Richard Opie, on Flickr HOW GOOD. The followup to this was pretty much a rinse and repeat of the earlier scenario. But with more hand sanding, and less power assistance. Definitely a learning process, figuring out how best to make the paper do the work, while maintaining a smooth surface ready for the base coat. KP61 Phone-8 by Richard Opie, on Flickr This was about the moment I began to properly fizz. Couldn't stay in the shed while it was being sprayed as I didn't have appropriate respiratory protection, but when the door rolled up... this shot of the bay coated in a colour matched red was the result. Not bad? Major tent pants moment was still to come, however. KP61 Phone-9 by Richard Opie, on Flickr Look at that! You could bloody go swimming in that gloss. Sheeper was a little bit apprehensive to try the clearcoat I bought (that was recommended by the joker at CarColors Albany) since different product can apparently yield very different results if you're not familiar with spraying it. But how good is the result, testament to the multi-talents of the lanky fella on the gun. A couple of runs for sure, and a little bit of dirt got in the paint - expected for spraying it in a garage. But nothing that can't be very easily fixed. Today was a day off working on it - from go to whoa this took 5 days in total. I'm heading back tomorrow to touch up the underseal in the guards and also reassemble the car, take it back to the shed it lives in and crack on with the engine while I let the paint harden enough to wet sand or cut/polish the imperfections out. Thanks for looking.

  28. Pics of the rust you put it on, expecting it to "convert"? I put some Metal Ready on this the other day as a test. ~10-15 minutes of letting it sit wet and 99.9% of the rust is gone. Success is going to be limited if the panel is rust fucked. Yeah it's only surface rust, but it also provides an etch on the metal, so shouldn't have a problem if top coated. Lighting is bad, it is clean other than a couple of tiny dots of dust left. I also treated all of my panel beating dollies and hammers as some had a bit of surface rust, good as new.

  38. So the clutch / gearbox ended up being not so straight forward ... Turns out 4 speed boxes run a different release bearing and clutch fork to the old 5 speed type boxes, so I ended up with the 4 speed in and out 4 times till i finally had the right combo of bearing, clutch fork and fork pivot adjustment spot on so the clutch would fully engage and release properly. The cars finally down on wheels again, needs a wash, and have booked a wof for tomorrow morning (fingers crossed) Added some pin-stripes (thanks archetype) - they follow the body crease, IMO it add's a nice subtle touch.

  43. So with the SJ out of my life and a clear head, I dragged the vino out from under the tarp it had been sitting under up the back yard. story behind this Is I got a phone call from a guy I used to work with saying ‘im having a clean up and I’ve got this scooter taking up space in my shed. it’s an asian Vespa looking thing. It’s been crashed and I can’t get it to start. I was like aw yeah, could be worth a look, took my trailer just in case, had some yarns and dragged it home. Turns out it’s a Yamaha Vino. It has been crashed and has a few cosmetic scratches on the plastics and a whole a bunch of broken plastics on the LH rear but managed to source the missing/broken bits from Zebradude, albeit off a Vmoto Milan and a different colour but not bothered as at least it’s complete now, -might colourmatch it and jam some paint over it at a later date. Pulled the carb off, cleaned it, charged the battery and fresh gas and yeah sweet it runs. Cleaned out the oil system and filled with fresh Motul oil, Bought and fitted a new 3.50-10 rear tyre as it was junk. Gave it the same Slam and underglow treatment as the SJ. Any lower in the back will need fuel tank relocated/modifications and the front tyre pretty much rubbing on the cross of the forks. Took it for a ride this evening and it seems to move along well. pics from the good side at a distance on full droop on the stand. Good Smoko runner tbh

  44. Been a long time since my last post. Slowly chipping away at the car. PCV bypass and catch can fitted. New cooling system with big alloy radiator and electric fan and controller. Alloy rocker cover. Bike carb manifold finished and bike carbs fitted and running. Rev counter dash fitted. I'm currently playing round with the tune on the carbs as I want to get it as close as possible, then give the engine a freshen up before sending it for a dyno tune. I have a wideband AFR so I have been playing with jetting and mixtures. Its not bad and a big improvement on the dog of a down draft that was on it....idle is so smooth now.
