  1. Well this has been stashed away and kept itself quiet a while then eh? however recently things have had a shuffle round here in Datsun land and this little car now has a new owner. Meet Greg. Oldschooler for long time. He is a bit of a Datsun fan and kicks about in a CA18det powered 180b... This is him here.. (not the wombat) A fair while ago I had realised that the restoration of this car was not going to happen in a hurry under my hands and I should really find it a new home. The advert stipulation was that it was to be sympathetically saved and not just split for parts. I had a few people enquire about it but no one actually committed. Then Greg rang. He needed a new project in his life and always liked the shape of this wee car. I was really happy to see it go his way has his ideas for it are pretty much what Id do. Ie; Nice wheels (13".....), lowered and a sweet engine upgrade (13b PP brapper Greg!!! - joke. It has to be an LD28) Greg is gonna take it on as a project to learn some more skills from but to start with I'll sort out some of the more critical nasty bits of corrosion which are a lot easier to deal with having a hoist for starters. Then when he comes up here to pick it up (and deliver my 3rd Imp for me ) we'll do a few welding lessons teach him some hopefully handy skills to help him out the continuation of the repairs. So a couple of months ago (maybe longer..my brain is all muddled up by Imp projects) Hannah and I stripped the Datsun right down to an empty shell. This had to happen so I could get a proper look at the corrosion and not have bits in the way while dealing with it. Typically we found a bit more rot but overall is all pretty easy stuff to deal with. Surprisingly not rot under the windscreen. Very lucky considering the seal leaked and had all the flexibility of a Crunchie bar. I carefully packed it all into our van and we took it down to Gregs on the way to the Oldschool nats. We stayed at my parents on the way through. I just had to get a pic of them holding a wing from a car they bought new but until more recently thought was crushed and not seen in many decades.. Greg now has some stuff to sort through while I start on the shell. Now after having sorted through some other work and dealt with a spot of IMP fettling I started proper on this shell two days ago. First off... those sills. Yuck... I want to get some real strength back in place so then it can be lifted happily on the hoist without fear of crumpling. I started on the drivers side sill. There was a previous repair hiding in here... The rear lower wing that covers the sill looked like this inside.. It looked terrible inside the main sill but luckily once cleaned out the inner is solid. I Painted it in Por15 last night and continued on with the repairs today. The sill tops were really good and the shape was pretty basic too. So many spot weld holes to drill. I must get an air punch/joggler tool! Greg can grind the welds down so saving a heap of my time/money.. The rear arch bit was a slightly awkward shape on the car. Luckily the otherside, although rusty too, has kept its shape enough to copy. Then the outer skin of the lower wing (guard..) which is where I finished off with this evening. In order to stop the thin panel it attaches to above from warping I folded over a tight bend. This will add some stiffness there. The bend faces down so condensation cant collect. Its almost finished enough to start on the other side. I'll be sorting through the repairs so that once Gregs pot of gold runs out he can continue on with less daunting stuff

  2. With the soft springs and lack of rebound valving truck tends to do this.. watch very end, kinda missed it. Not turning in the vid, my crappy ali fish eyed camera just makes it look like its a corner. its ok in 4wd, just does it in 2wd under power. but tbh don't really care that it does it under power. mostly the body roll around corners is a bit extreme . enter "offroad swaybar" kit. its basically a weak swaybar that can handle high travel. not sure how well its going to work, will find out the hard way like usual. Had to relocate the limit straps again , 4th time??

  3. Holden came back friday, had just about forgotten about it! Got some sweet rostyles plus some brown door cards and an 80's shaft-radio off @Threeonthetree, nice to meet you Neal! unbelievably (and probably in a fit of jealousy) my marina failed to proceed after coming back from auckland, sputtered and died in my driveway! Not too sure whats up with it, poor spark. Anyhow here's some pics from the beater, am hoping to have this thing complete in 2019, much work awaits

  4. Love that Raleigh chopper. I've tried talking my wife into letting me have something like that inside the house as art. When I came up with this, all she asked was "Oh Christ! You're not leaving me for another man are you?"

  5. Now a limp cardboard C&B isn't any use to anyone, so if you hadn't guessed...time to get some steel out And all done. Needs 2x spacers to centre caliper...but they're still making M6 washers I think? I'm pretty happy with that. Cost nothing but time and using left over miscellaneous bits from wrecked shit I brought for cheap on trademe mainly to get the motors out of for other projects.

  6. removed the battery tray and huge washer bottle bracket. found the perfect radiator in my shit i have in garage .was oe of the ones i had for my mk2 its a 70mm thick rx2 alloy rad and a bloody good size. so i measures it all up and cut the slam panel to fit it. should be a good fit. started making the bottom and got it welded it...made it to incorporate the bottom bracket for the rad to sit in. thats it so far.

  7. Thanks for all the suggestions, it is getting the brain matter working. When they cutup the GT Car wagons a few years back I would have loved to get my hands on some of the "Artwork" on those. I had a dream to start a coffee shop where the decor was side panels salvaged from the scrappies called "GT's"....would have been ace.

  9. Development has slowed, but the Niva is driving well, even completing a few road trips. Fuel economy was a tad crap, but performance has been satisfactory, I had the wideband hooked up the majority of the trips and the results are pleasing, while still a bit rich, it never leaned out under full power, for now that will have to do! I recently returned from Jackson Bay via the west coast, here's a few pics, such a nice place to travel through. On the way I called in to catch up with a good mate, TCGC. Found some long straight (bumpy) roads Beaches Surf was a bit lousy On the engine fixing side I had a fellow OSer 3d print some intake trumpets, they look the part, I just need to tidy them up a tad, After 2000km of worry-free motoring something had to give, most likely picked up some British virus near Timaru and now sports a large oil leak from around the sump, i'll have to explore further, so for now she's having a rest as I focus on work.

  10. So this was sitting forgotten about for months, but 4:30 yesterday I randomly thought stuff it lets pull it out and go to @64vauxhall's open day. Plan was to just pull it out, swap a charged battery in and load it in the van and have an early night. Well as fate would have it the one seal VG couldn't supply when I built the engine had let most of a litre of 2t oil fill the crankcase, in the process of attempting to clear it I managed to both strip the kick start and absolutely fry the starter motor... Luckily I had a spare, but it killed any chance of an early night! Found a friend to park up with

  11. Wheels! So I have been collecting some wheels. Set of 14” SSR MK 1’s 8j A-Disk Pair 14” SSR MK 2’s 7j Set of 14” Work Equip 03s 3-6.5j 1-7j chees- was selling his Mk1’s so I grabbed them and had the lips and faces tidied up, and they also got a good polish. These will be the wheels that will go on the car. I’m thinking I may require some 7.5s on the front but I won’t know till the car is on the ground to see how it sits. I also have new hardware for them. The guards will need to be rolled to fit the wider wheels. If you have any tips on how to not damage the wheel arch chrome let me know in the discussion thread Thanks. The MK 2’s popped up at a nice price and are like new, so I picked them up. Hopefully another pair will Pop up sometime to make a set. The Works were only purchased as wheels that will be used for wof and cert duties as the Mk1's wont cut it.

  16. Made some mounts for the gauges. Also made a mount to add some strength between the pedal box and dash. The wiper motor was just dangling around with the single mount so made another that connects it down to the bottom of the dash. Once they were made there wasn't much else that needs access from behind the dash so I welded the dash in. This is the second heater mount I made, the other one didn't look right as it didn't go up as high and wasn't the correct angle. Attached it with some rivnuts on the original firewall stiffeners or whatever they are. Found a high stop light in my pile of parts so decided to make up a bracket to sit on the seat frame. Gave all the dash parts, cowl vent and handbrake a sandblast and rustkill ready to paint. Painted with 2k gloss black. Made up a new brake line mount on the diff because the other one was fairly close to the exhaust. Have ordered a new line and fitting for it. Finished all the lines for the airbags. Here's a video of them working, the back still goes up very quick but that should hopefully slow down once there's more parts/fuel.

  18. The engine has been set back in the chassis approximately 'heaps' mm's. Lol! Fucked if i know without going out to measure. But the front spark plug of the engine is sitting somewhere around 100mm (probably a little shorter) behind the front axle CL. This effectively shunts the gearbox back heaps too. It also means the OEM torsion bar adjustment mechanisms fouled on the newly positioned manual gearbox. Faced with the decision to either convert to coil over or modify the existing setup - the existing setup won out due to it costing nothing but time. But farrrk!!! What a balls aching job. Everything's on angles and I ended up having to fabricate near everything. The original adjusters were originally closer to the driveshaft. They have been swapped out for a pair of KUN26 ones, then plates made to allow them to be mounted close to the chassis rail. See pics. All this equals heaps of room to allow a big inch MoPar to monster the inside of a Lux chassis.

  20. Chur bo number two showed up - hopefully last big ticket item I have to buy And while Im poor am focusing on the cheap labour intensive bits - manifold #2 coming along... Any wastegate boffins out there? Cant decide whether I risk 2x 40mm Turbosmarts or go with the ~$100 per side extra 45mms... US guys seem to get away with twin 38s on LSx motors but many applications Ive seen have more room so better able to build ports that help with flow to the gates. Mine wont be quite 90deg turns but arent exactly setup for best flow...

  22. I've been keeping an eye out for a set of these in 15". Some appeared on Tardme last week and they were in driving distance to collect too. No one else bid.... so I probably paid too much. The centre needs to be gold. I wanted 15" so I can put bigger brakes on the front. I also made a start on the jig to narrow the rear subframe by 145mm. The subframe will be welded to the two inner lengths of angle. And the two outer bits of angle are parallel and welded to the bench. Once I think the subframe is sufficiently braced and welded. I will cut a section out of the middle of the two inner bits of angle. Then I will be able to chop bits out of the middle of the subframe and 'just' slide the two halves closer together while still keeping them aligned. But I ran out of mig wire. On a weekend.

  23. I never envisaged I'd end up here. But just like weed is a precursor to more dangerous and experimental risk taking, it turns out gopeds are too. Unknowing I've gone from this: To this: And now somehow ended up here... Yes the equivalent of smoking a few harmless joints with your mates one day...then waking up on a blood stained mattress, down a dark alleyway with a smack needle hanging out your arm a few years later. Somehow, and I never saw the warning signs (though everyone else did) I've ended up buying a pocket bike. Not the best decision for a 6' 4" 100kg ginger. However...fuck yeah, seriously fuck yeah...this thing is ridiculous!!! It does 80kph, you have to be so careful or it will pop the front wheel up. It's simply mad how stupidly fast this motor is. So for now I'm embracing my new addiction...I'm in control, I only do it socially...I could give up anytime I wanted to.

  24. Sent the truck home on a tow truck on Friday arvo nothing I did to it, the front left wheel bearing made a pop and then the wheel got real wobbly sparkle sparkle removed the hub spindle had a little marring, fairly light so I just cleaned it up No dramas getting the races out outer bearing race pinged apart and split as it was removed. rollers had no grease in them, might have been part of it Tapped in the new races slight issue the outer race was a loose fit. probably this was a cause. same bearing numbers, but I could rotate it by hand with little effort. The two old bearings didn't look that old, so probably the last time it went, it wallered out the hub face, new one went in and has now spun and cooked it. Fortunately I deal with ancient worn out junk all the time, so I used a pin punch to make the hole smaller and pressed the new race in tight. Not ideal, but itl last till I swap in the 2nd gen spindles anyways made sure to pack the hell out of the bearings, and clean everything up ace

  26. Failed Deadline So I/IT failed the deadline of toyotafest. It was always going to be a tight one, but it definitely got me motivated to get it done. Suspected Blown Head Gasket a month out stopped it from getting there. I just want to bin the 1g-eu, so il keep an eye out for either 1g-ge / 1g-gte / 2jz-ge Anyway... After checking the other wheel arch, no damage was found. Further investigation shows that the lower control arms are actually different colours. So my guess is that it was once in some kind of accident. I managed to pick up a cheap Altezza LSD. So the goodies swapped into the F-series Diff. The rear sub frame was dropped and sent off to have the outside lower control arm mount modified to run an eccentric bolt. Hopefully to remove some camber for certification. Unfortunately they brought down the bolt hole more than I showed. I wanted the ability to wind some camber back into it after certification but it can always be changed in the future. New front brake rotors, pistons and bearings were all added. Had some issues with the caliper cage not lining up with the rotor. Checked the new rotors, thinking there was a problem, but they matched. The brakes came with the coil overs so I’m not sure how they once worked. Had the cages machined to fit and its together now. Also Tidied up the rear break pistons and got new brake hoses all round. Unfortunately with the addition of the RCA’s the lower control arm hits the brake shield. Will need to bend the shield to make it work.

  27. Ok been doing some research this thing has been messed around with lots of little bits that add up. Still trying to figure out exactly what but so far everything you would do to a GTI golf for a healthy power gain without going crazy has been done, it shows it absolutely rips when its running good. So next plan is to pull out a few things control valves throttle body maf sensor and test them one at a time if good make sure they are clean internally and refit if not I'm going online shopping. Any shitty vacuum lines will get swapped out for new ones too. Some sensors on these cars were part of a recall so will make sure those have been swapped out in the past.

So I started on Facebook at complete cars and this Nissan Leppard came, hell of a ugly car though but it's a V8 and the same price as the V6 Commodores on offer.. Now I can start the chassis

  34. All the rust work is finally done! Rolled the guards, managed to pump them out about 45mm. Wheels has been a big issue until now, local company stocks a wheel made in Ireland called Revolution wheels, similar to Superlites and the quality is excellent for the price considering the other crap on the market for more e.g Rotas . Most importantly, they clear the 4 pots without spacers! 15x8 0 offset. Ordered some Toyo T1Rs 225/50r15 for the rear, undecided on the front.... Intercooler plumbing done....exhaust almost done, first start is rapidly approaching

  35. Got a reply from Catlins brewery as follows, Kerry Norm is in Wellington with his family for a few days for school holidays, so I don’t want to bother him til he returns. I am not sure if he will be fine with this, as he may be tied up with shooting ducks, as you probably know that is opening weekend!! I will let him know of your request, and get back to you soon. As we don’t have a licence to sell alcohol from the brewery directly to the public there can only be samples! We do sell merchandise, though. If I was to host you it wouldn’t have the flair that Norm adds to a visit!! Peter Might have to make it another time perhaps. See what Norman says when he gets back. I had forgotten that they aren't licenced to sell retail directly from the brewery.

  36. Long time coming update time. Have been doing things on this in no particular order so here goes Reinforcin' stuff Before After Common problem on 2002s is the engine mount on the passenger side is prone to cracking. This should fix it. Another problem area, especially on earlier 2002s are the control arms. Boxing them in either side should do a world of good Finished fixing dings in the bonnet and is now primed Looks like this on the car Getting there at snails pace but at least it's something right?
