  2. Some parts arrived from America on Thursday. Floor patch panels, a few small bits and also 2 13x7 reverse 4 spoke Cragar's. I wasn't sure how good the rims would be but turns out they're nice! With these rims I can test fit them all round. I'm certain they'll fit on the back with the IRS but the front I'm not sure about. I'll sort that this weekend then know what I'll need to complete the set. Happy as! Discuss here, Cheers!

  3. You can see in the pictures, the way I done it in separate pieces, then glued it all down. I didn't bother with underlay as I'm not to fussed with the softeness and noise. The few yellow bits in the photos are where the seat rails bolt On, il bolt in the seats then cover the rest with carpet.

  4. So some have asked to see pics of some of my other cars. You've probably seen 1 or 2 of them around no doubt. I've had the 46 Chevy Fleetmaster for the last 14 years or so. Its an ever evolving project. Love this thing. Recently converted to 5 stud using 55 hubs for the front and changing out the dif to a Nova dif. Doing this I converted it to open drive using a converter on the end of the original gearbox. Now its geared up to cruise a lot nicer on the open road. It still runs the original 216 dipper, never misses a beat: Then my 78 Camaro. This build has been a real eye opener haha: And the most recent other than the Corvair is the 77 Thunderbird Town Landau. Its fully specd with, from what I can gather, every factory option it can have, down to the fake luggage straps. We picked this up in Wanaka and did an epic roadtrip back to Hamilton. Loved it. The cars real tidy with 49k OG miles on the clock, been in the country since 81. Slowly putting my touch on it: Those are the current cars I have. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a lot of money haha I've put a lot of time into these and a lot of help from friends and family. Also my crazy obsession doesn't help. Sometimes its a curse haha

  5. Also If you remember seeing a while ago in this thread a sparkly Fa50 frame, I finally got around to bolting it back together just before dromeageddon. I decided to fit 14in dirtbike tyres to it after getting a sweet deal from a fellow oldschooler for maximum dirt tractions for backup at dromeageddon. As a note, they do fit but just. To get the rear wheel on involves fitting the wheel with the tyre deflated and then inflating once bolted in place. I also had to remove the stand as that rubbed hard on the tyre and the carb filter elbow misses by a whisker BONUS IMAGE. CHECK OUT THAT SPARKLE

  6. That's the finished product for one of the seats. Defanatly not as easy as I thought. I appreciate the work of pro upholsters. For a first attempt, I think it turned out alright, better then they were before, I think anyway. There's a few loose bits that need to be stretched out, but not sure how to do it without taking the cover back off and glueing it down.

  7. Here's a Bit more pictures of the sewing. It's quite hard as the machine is super quick and i can't slow it done anymore. There's no room for mistakes haha. Un stitched the old covers and traced them onto the new vinyl. Got them sewn up along with some pleats and piping.

  8. I've been floating around this site for a while, figured now's a good time to start a build thread since I picked up a new project. Its actually for the misses But I've fallin' for it too. We initially bought a Nash Metropolitan, we basically stored it for a few years doing a few minor things getting it running and driving but at the end of the day it was a can of worms I just wasn't motivated to get into. So we picked up a 63 Corvair Monza coupe off trade me and sold the Nash within an hour of each other... Perfect! The Corvair's a reasonably fresh import, its pretty tidy with a bit of rust on the front floors and thats it. It was running a bit rough but came with brand new carbs so chucked them on and gave it a tune. Found an exhaust valve tappet was a little tight, loosened that off and it started running perfectly. Any way here's some pics... Excuse the Trade Me interior pics. I don't have any good ones of my own yet haha Discuss here, Cheers!

  9. Well car failed cert. Pretty small list in all honesty, but one of them is possibly a big job. No spring washers on engine mounts. (Easy fix) No rear bump stops. (I thought the were on the shaft of the shock) Rear suspension is too hard. Upper 4-links touching on chassis. So the last 3 are really all hand in hand with each other. The car still feels a little bit like you sitting on bump stops. I'm wondering if a lot of this is too do with the 4-link arms being rose-jointed as opposed to the factory arms having bushes. So my plan, too lift it a bit higher, find different shocks for the rear... again... that also have bump stops on the shaft. Hopefully this will sort the whole 3 things out. I lifted it tonight, about 15-20mm. It's given heaps more clearance underneath so that, combined with bump stops will fix the upper 4-links from touching the chassis and hopefully, improve the ride quality so it's suitable. Certifier will be back in Rotorua week after next so I'll get it done by that and then see how I go again.

  10. So this happened today... That's gonna slow progress a bit. A bit pissed off cos wife and kids away and thought I'd have a real good run in the shed. A few weeks in a cast unfortunately (again)... [edit for reason] Punched something I shouldn't have (not angry - clumsy)... ooh just noticed I can see the metal splinter in my index fingie I picked up the other day. Should have got them to dig it out...

  11. Needs cert to be legit, even if it somehow sneaked thru entry cert it would more than likely be picked up at wof time, or insurance if in an accident. Looks like it has had brake mods as well. If it was, for example, a camaro that was a 6 cyl and came in with a 350 you might get away with something like that because it's a lot more tricky to figure out what the standard engine was, and it could have had it from factory. But a 54 truck with a v8 (which chev didnt start making till 55) , and from a different manufacturer, and more than likely some American "engineering" will be obvious to anyone that it's not factory.

  13. Corvairs had handling issues during development, mainly due to the swing axle rear suspension among other things. GM's partial solution for this was to specify that the cars ran approximately a ten psi pressure differential front to rear. This alleviated the problem to some extent but often the owners would forget or ignore these instructions (because who puts 20psi in the front and 34psi in the back right?) and it directly led to quite a few crashes. The fallout of which was highlighted in Ralph Nader's 'Unsafe at any speed', especially once GM started really pushing the tyre pressure differential. Needless to say, it soon became apparent that this was a band aid fix to the problem. Whatever wheels and tyres you run, for your own safety please run approximately 10-16psi higher in the rear tyres than you do in the fronts. Run it with equal tyre pressures all around to compare and you'll see the difference. I've pined these things for years and nearly bought an early first generation '61 3 speed base model a year or two ago. Oh and a little true story: When the engineering team at Rootes Group in the UK were contemplating a rear engined car (later to become the Hillman Imp), they purchased a brand new Corvair and used it on their test track for evaluation. They rolled the car in moderate cornering (supposedly equal tyre pressures) and some of the occupants were pretty well injured. They then completely rejected swing axles for their upcoming Hillman Imp and instead fitted an articulated multi link rear setup. All that aside, I love these things and can't wait to see it in person someday. Good luck and I'm looking forward to the updates. Oh and the inevitable flung fan belt that these things love to do.

  14. Been crazy busy at work so not a great deal of progress being made, but been hitting the chrome and stainless with metal polish and jamming it back on the car bit by bit. Also got my grill back from Bumper Replacements in Auckland. Really nice job and had a fair bit of rust on it before so the difference is just massive.

  15. Oh right, so you wanted the rest of the story too? Sorry, here goes.. Repower, pt.3 So I took a Friday off work, parked the car in the garage and started stripping stuff out of the engine bay. A surprisingly short amount of time later, all the mechanical bits started falling out. Oily, broken 1100 begone! Sorry, I didn't get any air guitar shots, it was too hard to take selfies while lifting the motor out... And it's in! After fitting the ancillaries, filling it with fluids, fitting the manifolds, timing it and winding it over to get oil pressure, the moment of truth arrived. It fired up and ran sweetly, so I had to take it for a cheeky test run sans bonnet. Excite! The valve clearances had closed up a bit, but after adjusting them and checking the head bolt torques, it's been fine. I also replaced the starter solenoid, because one of the terminals broke off. And the Hitachi carb works alright too, I might still play with jet sizes if I can find some others to experiment with. The difference between the engines is night and day though, like it actually goes up hills now. The transmission is smooth, and all the fluids seem to be staying in their respective places, so i'll call it a win. Since then, it's continued to provide effective, reliable daily transport. I gave it a polish and it came up pretty nicely, considering it's actually six different shades of orange And I took it camping at Whatipu over the New Years period. Had to stop on the way home for an obligatory gravel road shot: discuss/tell me to put a rota in it: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/48306-mk2martys-1976-escort-moredoor-discussion/

  16. Here's my beast I picked up for $50. It's not a walking foot machine, if been told it's quite hard doing upholstery work without the walking foot, especially sewing vinyl. But I purchased a roller wheel attachment which is meant to help a little.

  17. Project discussion: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/55789-corona_man-1979-toyota-ke30/ I thought I'd start a build thread on the recently purchased Ke30 Corolla I have just purchased. I'm off work at the moment so am going to try and restore it back to original condition within a month. The car is in pretty.good condition, has minimal rust in it , but the 4k motor is stuffed. I will just be putting back in a 3k or 4k motor. Interior is a bit old, no carpet and seats are ripped up. I will be doing all the work myself, panel and paint, engine work, re upolstry, the lot. I will keep up regular updates if anyone is even interested in it. Here's a picture of it as is

  19. These are a couple cars I've had in the past. There have been others but these are the ones that meant the most... 1982 EX Lancer GSR. This thing was awesome. Factory injected turbo, 4 wheel disc, LSD blah blah blah... Loved this car, still kick myself for selling it. I still seeing it kicking around Hamilton. After it went through a few hands it looks like its found a good owner: And my 85 Cressida. Manual and had a 1g-gte coversion done when I got it but nothing else. I chucked an LSD in it, repainted it, wheels, lowered and gave it a good tidy up. Was a tidy car, I used it as a daily but had to let it go. Kick myself over this one too: Cheers, Kenny

  20. So I haven't really done much on these, I successfully passed my basic handling test and acquired my motorcycle learners licence. since then Ive really just been enjoying riding the Ax100 around the streets. Ive run out of gas a couple of times, and the fact that it runs premix is a nuisance when that happens/means I really have to plan trips to the gas station. Apart from that, Its great fun to ride. A few weeks ago while the weather was crappy I spent a couple of evenings out in the garage chopping the wiring and fixing a few issues to allow me to finally get around to fitting the round headlight I purchased. Aesthetically its made a HUGE change to the whole bike for the better. It looks a lot lighter and much more towards the look Im aiming for. Fitting the round headlight gave me the issue of having nowhere to mount the ignition switch. Previously the switch was mounted in the body of the rectangular headlight, but a few modifications to the wiring resulted in me being able to move the switch to the side cover I'd made earlier. numbers on the sidecover are a quick scribble with a crappy paint pen to see what I thought for making a proper set of decals/number board. Now I need to purchase new rear indicators as ive lost one lense and new bar grips.

  22. Mine is on the right-hand end of my bench which is also next to a roller door, good for sending grinder sparks onto car windscreens
    1 point
  23. Mine's in the middle of the bench but the bench only extends half way along the wall. Grandfather mounted his in the middle of a bench that extended all the way along a short wall of his garage and made a removable hatch so that if he needed to work on long stuff it could just hang out the hole in the wall. My pipe vice is semi outside for ease of use with long pipes.

  26. So ordered some bkack carpet and binding. Striped out the old worn carpet. I done the carpet in a few different pieces, not just one big piece. I also made up a shift boot and handbrake boot , out of vinyl, and sewed it to the carpet. Then got some binding and sewed it around the edges to make it look tidier.

  27. Import compliancing question: If I bring in something ex-USA which has been engine swapped, what is the process at this end for compliancing? hope it slips through un-noticed? or be upfront from the outset and see what mods need to be made to it to get it Low Volume complied. 28. So I started pulling the dash out, I want the interior to be all black, so am going to paint all the plastic bits. I also removed the heater box. The previous owner had disconnected it, I presume because it leaked. I pulled the heater apart, and got to the heater core, and.no surprise it had a small pin hole in it. I soldered it up and tested it, it's good now, so can put it back in and a warm working heater. Next on the list is new carpet

  38. Woop woop. Been pretty busy with swapping motors in my wagon, nats and leeboes daddy shower. However finally been getting some time on this. Spent the last few evening's tidying up the wiring and refitting all the dash, kick panels etc. Pretty happy to have that done. So fit my new steering wheel. Pretty happy with it. But needed a more fancy horn button. Thankfully, I had bought a bunch of mooneyes stickers when I visited von makooooooo at magoos hot rods over nats weekend. Was perfect size. Much win. So driving this to work at some point over the long weekend to finish the exhaust. And that should be it really. Cert ready! (I hope) Anyway. Rock and roll.

  40. Well, at last I have a large grey pontiac in my garage. Still a couple things to paint like the skirts and the detail on the 'waterfall' trim that goes over the hood and trunk. Grill has been rechromed and will do the front bumper too plus a few randoms like indicators and tail lights, rear bumper is still pretty good. Have a bit of a list of stuff to do, now at that stage where I have to decide if I just want to get back on the road asap or drag it out doing more stuff. I'd like to do as much Dynamat as I can afford, at the very least in the doors/rear quarters. I had a felt kit and new rubbers for the front quarter windows to go in but this didn't happen when it was apart as I 'd hoped it might. Might be the time to pull doors apart and do this, and rechrome the quarter window frames as they're a bit rusty. Hmmm. Anyway, here's a couple of random pics. Since I have such a list of things to do it seemed logical to put the venetians in for a test fit! Priorities... Not 100% sure on them, think they'll work when more chrome is back on car. Currently look like too much of a feature. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53947-shifters-51-pontiac-chieftain-talky-stuff/

  41. Mayte, I was on the fence until you mentioned free snags. Love 'em So for all those planning on attending I propose the following amendments: We travel from Auckland down to Hamilton on the 30th of April, attend Midnight Upholstery's Open Day, visit the Hamilton classic car 'Classics Museum' and the associated swap meet that will be occuring on its grounds. The classics Museum Swap Meet is a $5 entry per person but children under 15 or those who look younger than 15 like chees- are free. There is a wide range of food available including the Diner themed restaurant at the Classics Museum itself, a BBQ at Midnight upholstery which is less than five minutes away or a wide range of Waikato culinary delights including Waikato Draught, pies and McDonalds. And some decent food too puhuhu. Since the drive from Auckland to Hamilton is probably the shittiest drive in the country IMO, we could always meet at the Drury BP and take one of several alternative routes to Hamilton including: - Turning off SH1 at Pukekohe, cutting across through Tuakau and heading south through Pukekawa on SH22. Then heading East back to SH1 through Glen Murray along Glen Murray road. This road and the area south of Tuakau are good driving roads with a lovely bush scenery and plenty of hills, corners and straights. This route would see us rejoin SH1 at Rangiriri. - Turning off SH1 at Pokeno, heading South through Pukekawa on SH22 but continuing even further South through Naike, crossing the border into the Waikato shortly after and then turning East onto Hetherington road and joining SH1 back at Huntly - Turn off SH1 at Rangiriri, Head South through Rotongaro, Glen Afton and Glen Massey, thenheading into Hgaruawahia and on to Hamilton. Or feel free to suggest another route. There are roads to the East of SH1 but they aren't as entertaining or enjoyable to drive through as the ones on the West as suggested above. But I am open to feedback as it's all about what you guys and girls want. 45. Right, finally interesting stuff to report. Car went into the booth today. Really happy with the colour but damn, is it impossible to photograph! Looks dark grey, light grey, brown and green from different angles. Something I've heard from other people with this colour. It's definitely not going to be a popular choice with everyone and a few will probably think I missed a sweet opportunity to go some new metallic but I really wanted to do something a bit different while staying very 50s and understated. Anyway here's some pics...

  47. Did a few wee jobbies on the bike today; Modified a sx85 expansion chamber to fit. Will probab.ly do nothing for performance because it's not the right type of pipe for the engine but it looks rad. It'll be the job until my PE175 pipe turns up (then I'll mod that to fit). A GC from work bent some stainless tube for my rear hoop so I welded that on too. Now I can get onto making a proper seat. Managed to strip a thread for the exhaust too. And painted a couple wee things. Rad
