  1. So, back in October 2015 a nice OS member from Wellington sent me this Snapchat of this glorious car, with all glass attached. In the mighty Taranaki/Midhurst. Got pretty excited, hoping I could get me a rear window, quarter window latch and well anything really. Did some streetview sleuthing® and google stalking™ and managed to track down the fella who possessed it. He reckoned he'd sold it some time ago, and the bloke was yet to pick it up. Fella reckoned he'd get in touch with the bloke to see if he still intended to take it, as he had already paid for it. Followed up every few weeks until recently with unsuccessful phone calls. Till a few weeks back he said that no, the bloke didn't want it anymore, and if I were to reimburse his purchase price I could take it. This is how I spent the most I ever have buying one of these, $200, robbery I tells ya. So yesterday I set off from the lovely sunny coastal eastern Bay of Plenty, and drove the width of the country to the also sunny coastal western Taranaki district. Was greeted by this mess, half a dozen cars deep and with a few more bits missing but it has the crucial window I need and hopefully some more is salvageable. Aired the tyres, managed to jack it up somehow and un-seize/disassemble the rear brakes and fit two OK rear wheels. Dragged it kicking and screaming onto the dolly and then drove back across the country. Made it home fairly uneventfully, although there will be a decent amount of debris trailing I think. Tell me about the sickness here. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/22150-waimaks-gsr/page-18

  2. So thought I would do a write up on a project I did for my brother over summer/for his 21st birthday present. So he has a mini that he absolutely loves and he saw some roof racks online and wanted to do something along these lines... Did some research and couldn't buy anything suitable talked to me and did some CAD modelling to do something way cooler than that. Wanted to add some curves to it as the mini isn't a very square car so squares would look weird on it. Curving the roof rack in both directions looked good and wanted to create a 'floating deck' with no stays in the corners so it looked lush/kinda like it wasn't attached. Wanted to do it all out of stainless so it is shiney AF. Used 3/4" dairy tube as its easy to work with and aesthetically was the right proportions for the mini. Send cad files to autobend and they rolled and bent the tubes to suit. had to cut + weld to length (ignore my rubbish welding pls) Got it all welded up and test fitted good My brother did some woodwork with Kiwa?Kila? wood and came up real nice! Pic showing clamp/mounting arrangement Turned out pretty good and looks sweet. Best thing is its super practical also. Just did a west coast trip in it with his girlfriend and they could stow their luggage on it. Here's a few sweet parting shots of sweet south island west coast.

  3. Here is a photo of a not so jacked gloria wagon. 50mm blocks in the back and kawasaki special springs up front. sills are pretty much spot on level but looks whack as front guard opening is so big. would like the front a touch lower at some point but this will do for now. Next is wheels, either 15s or 16s to help fill the guards. not much room in the back so wont be anything cray cray //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/41006-beavers-87-gloria-wagon/page-6

  4. well it is all legal after a few minor things like park lights and a indicator and getting horn to work but……. since then it has developed a massive oil leak from the back of the head and is now smoking! So as I'm not to fussed on pissing around much more with these old carby engines I have found a mx5 motor and bellhousing and am going to do the swap for fuel injection life. may as well as it was always the plan for reliability and economy just had hoped to at least use it for awhile as it is. if i get motivated i may try chuck a gasket at it and see if it comes right and use it for awhile until i have all the conversion worked out. here is a very technical drawing of the plan of attack

  5. It bolted in ok, sentradave very kindly fiddled my shaft and swapped yokes. He also did the rear brake lines. Re mounted fuel pump with some rubber and ran a new fuel line as the old shit was fucked as. Clever use of rivnuts to mount the handbrake cables. It bolted in great btw, untill i tried to adjust the links to get the correct pinion angle and now nothing fits. I got a supertrapp though, so i've got that going for me. I'd like to thank the following; sentradave for engineering and moral support pooman for taming dave evan for doing the things i didn't feel like doing romandave for showing us the magical brake bleeding technique dell'orto for the sick hookups I've got a few tricks left up my sleeve to solve the diff angle problem, so I need to visit zebra and see what they have to offer.

  7. wee bit more progress, made a number plate/reverse light mount with lights I got from AALAWS grandads shed and a random bit of ally sheet also got it registered (2016 Ford Escort Trailer) Lady @ VTNZ wouldnt let me look through the pile of plates she had (BUT WHHHHYYYYYYYY!!!!!) but I guess it says "For My '58" and the numbers are pretty close to those on the 125, so whatevs. Other suggestions welcomed on a SAE. Just need to find time midweek to take it for a WoF. Cut up some ply for the floor - instantly filled up with shit again Also bought some some vinyl and some fancy gold foil underlayment. I should have just got the cheap stuff without foil as the foil came away from its foam backing which the vinyl was glued too and made the roof sag. Rip it out and more glue between the layers i guess. May bang in a roof support of some kind to help the ceiling stay up and also to mount a light to. Still need to install carpet and interior stuff will steal all that from the van as well as the sink and etc. Storage will be an issue as theres not really enough room to raise the bed or stow thing up high so stuff will just be loose until bed time i guess, but there is a lot of room underneath for a fresh water tank and the spare tyre (will also check the vans spare winderupperer for possible swapsies).

  10. i took the sump off and had a look up its bum to see if there was anything obvious wrong with the piston but i couldn't see fuck all so i took the head off which resulted in still not being able to see fuck all wrong so then i took number 6 piston out and i think i might have found the problem. 2016-05-01_03-08-56 by sheepers, on Flickr

  11. got the struts crack tested yesterday and this morning i took all the bits to work and bead blasted them all. then Richard (the guy who's buying the car) came over and gave me a hand to paint the bits. we als installed the rear springs and shocks. I'm waiting on the top hats from T3 and i can put it back together and put them back in the car. 2016-04-30_02-45-49 by sheepers, on Flickr 2016-04-30_04-20-51 by sheepers, on Flickr

  12. Got some things done today... BOV mounted Made mounts and spacers for the coil packs And the diff...3.55 torana ...LSD.. And drilled to 4x108. It had some mounts on it for other calipers but I don't know what. So I took a trip to pick a part and grabbed some focus discs and calipers as well as a full set out wheel studs from a sierra. I drilled the hole out for the thicker wheel studs. And made some tabs to moist the calipers.

  14. OK yeah.. so I have ended up getting a touch carried away with this little wagon and sort of going against my original mission statement of 'keeping it all manky looking and just scrape it through a wof'. The reason for the slight change of heart is because when I started cleaning out the engine bay and really noticed how deep and yucky the surface rust and crusty bits were I soon knew I would have to paint it. Then I pulled the last of the wiring out so I could clean it out and I thought to myself as I was feeding the wires through the bulkhead 'well that's an ugly bit of cable routing..I don’t really want to see that again’. Before I knew it I had Hannah inside watching for fires while I welded discs of steel into all the bulkhead holes from the outside. Rewinding back a couple of weeks, because this project has become glacial in its progress. First thing.. those wheels. I fitted them and rolled the car out the back while I used the hoist for a customers car. It looks great on the Turbos. They certainly do suit this car better than on Viva one. I had also noted that the Viva wagon is exactly the same colour as the water tank... I had been umming and erring about removing the battery tray from the engine bay. I knew if I did that I would have to fabricate a box down the back under the floor due to the wagon needing to be clear floored for max usefulness in earning its keep. I also knew the tray was hiding things. Bad things possibly. I removed it. Not easily either. It seem that the fella who spot welded it in place was either drunk, had too much coffee or was suffering from MS. There was no order to the spots and I couldn’t find them. I couldn’t just chisel it off because doing so would dent and wreak the inner wing. Took ages. Off with it and look at that. Yuck. Glad it was gone because no way would that stuff had rested from its metal eating duty. With it gone I looked over the general mankyness of the whole bay and realised it needed to be done properly. I removed the heart. It was only being held in place by two exhaust nuts and the two mounts. So tiny. With it out I whipped up a simple engine cradle/wheelie tray thingee to put it on so it can be moved about the workshop easily. Hannah is going to get paid in kind words, cups of tea and biscuits to clean the engine for me. I noticed that the frost plug on the back of the head looks very dodgy indeed so lucky it was out anyway. It could have spoiled the party later on… I filled up holes, cut our more rusty patches and generally cleared it all out for a nice clean bay look. I cut off all brackets to do with the ugly factory throttle linkage. I have instead been given a later Viva HC throttle pedal like I have fitted to Viva one. Big thanks to Andre yet again for having one in his stash of bits. Hannah laughs at my idea that if I have the same pedals then when jumping from car to car for daily driving they will feel the same to drive. I don’t think she realises the power of the mighty 1159cc Viva. I also dealt to the rust that was in the drivers side A pillar… Welded up the cut in the hinge bracket that had refused to let go of the pin ages ago at the very beginning. After welding up all the holes in the bulkhead leaving only the clutch cable and speedo cable holes I ground them all smooth. I then removed the now very scratched and sad looking screen. I think it might be the original. With it gone I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of rot in the well. Only one corner had succumbed and it was not bad at all. I cut it out, welded it up and moved around to the back where it was rotten in the pillar. With the screen out one can easily marvel at the beauty of such a mint dash top.. Now fixed and strong again I stepped back into the engine bay and continued grinding, sanding and smoothing the bay. To earn this episodes title of ‘getting carried away’ I even removed the fuse box and welded up the hole. I might have to do this mod to Viva one some day. Finally I applied some Brunox epoxy rust neutraliser. This is now where I am at with the bay… I had popped into Nelson last week for welding gas etc so while there I went to an automotive paint shop and bought some epoxy primer plus three cans of colour matched spray paint. Well they were colour matched at the time. I had forgotten to take in my little bit of steel which had un-faded paint on it. So instead me and the fella behind the till tried to match the colour off a internet photo of a Cactus green Viva off the nerdnet on my phone. Never easy. Once home I sprayed some on the car. Whoops. It’s a bit brighter. But its still nice and looks 60s so it’ll do. Anyway- any engine bay painted in one neat clean colour always looks better. So that is where I am at now. I have heaps of paid work on right now so Hannah having finished her current work in one days time will get some cleaning and painting jobs. This way she shall earn the privilege to hold up traffic in the mighty Viva wagon (hatch..) on the hills around us. I have been having many thoughts about engine swaps or sneaky turbos and simple injection systems don’t you worry. But really I have strayed far enough already. I will however be re-wiring the bay so to allow for really easy engine swap/changes in management etc for the future. Keeping all the lights/horn/starter/alternator etc separate to the engine loom. Ha..the current engine loom. All of 3 wires? Temp, oil, ignition feed. Old cars eh? Giggle

I payed $5 i think at the mcleans island swapmeet. Pretty happy with them and theyre staying on. Next up is to mount the mudguard and mount an oil tank.

  16. So it's been a long time since the last update but things have been happening. We pulled the engine and gearbox again to fix that noises bearing. While it is out I painted the engine bay and the engine. All the pointless wiring has been removed and the rest is being tidied up. Have removed the guard and under sealed them all. Fixed rust also. This guard is off because still need to weld a patch in inner wheel arch. New shocks all round and tires. Repositioned my aerial so it's on an angle. Think it looks better than straight up. Can extend it out to about 5 feet also. Engine all painted. Redoing the extractors as previous job was rather shitty. Easier fixing when engine of car Rebuilt clutch master, brake was rebuilt a little while back as well. A guard, fixed any issues with it and under sealed. Overall seems to be coming along ok. That's about it for now. Will hopefully have exhaust fixed all soon and engine back in. Discuss here if you want //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/36619-daves-prince-b200/?fromsearch=1

  21. so i'd love to tell you all how great this thing is to drive and how much i've been enjoying it............ but that would be a lie. the lemonlux is still losing reverse intermittently. i can start it, go to reverse out of the garage, and nothing. try again the next day, exactly the same conditions, the thing hasn't even moved, and it works perfectly. can't bloody work it out. i had the sump of the box off again today, pulled the shift solenoids out and tested them, one seemed a little sticky but after a couple of tests it was working fine. not sure if i'm imagining it, or if i just made a shit connection the first couple of times with my car battery/cut off coat hanger test rig. sealed up the sump again and put it all back together, just waiting for it to cure then will top up the box with fresh ATF, again, and see how she goes. i'm also going to try disconnecting the speed sensor on the rear of the box next time it loses reverse, apparently this sends it into 'manual' mode, and reverse should work, if its a solenoid/electric/computer problem. i was also given a free A340E from behind a JZ, if i can't sort this reverse thing then i'm going to try swapping over the tailshaft housing and the bellhousing from my box and just use that, its an earlier version without computer control (apparently) so if i can make it fit then it should cause a lot less issues. fingers crossed i get a solution out of one of these options a picture of the lemonlux in its natural environment, up on jack stands in the shed: fucking thing. cheers Matt

  27. So in absence of doing any actual work on my racecar, I've been doing a few events in my daily Levin testbed/hack around car in the aim of knowing exactly what suspension setup I want in my racecar. The two things I wanted to determine were; 1. What springrates to run on track to eliminate my previous tyre outside edge scrubbing issue and crippling understeer? 2. How does front swaybar go on the track and on the road + how does this effect spring rate required? 3. Is their a happy medium between a track/road/targa setup I could achieve? So in order to scientifically prove this I entered a trackday at taupo and booked myself in for an epic tarmac hillclimb. I had the same Tein coilovers in the car I ran in the racecar previous to rebuild so had a decent reference for how it drove. Used 400lb springs front and rear with Cusco swaybars front and rear along with the same old Semi slicks that have been sitting in the shed for the last 3 years.. Things went well. Lapped around the 1.46 mark on Track one in the afternoon. In summary from trackday; 1. Front swaybar was awesome. No understeer at all and perfect front/rear balance with rear stepping out when I wanted it to. Spring rates were perfect albeit a lack of suspension travel probably helped me out 2. open diff was painful but wheelspin not as bad as expected. They are shit and effect handling SOO much in a fwd car. 3. People who drive Skylines and GTR's are a bunch of pansies. Come on people if my 100kw POS road car can beat your uber power car around the track you're doing something wrong! All in all lots of fun and doorty noises were had Next up was the Tarmac hillclimb - 9km's of epic targa road on Pekanui rd (by Ngutunui school) Raised the car 20mm to try get some suspension stroke/stop the shocks from bottoming out. Other than this did nothing. Made some good noises Ended up 4th in class and doing pretty well. Everyone was impressed by it for a cheap/low cost basic car. Enjoyed tarmac driving a lot and gave me heaps of motivation for racecar doorty things. Things I learnt from Tarmac Hillclimb; 1. 80mm suspension travel in each direction is not enough even with stiff springs - bottoming out unsettles the car something chronic and makes it want to crash into the scenery 2. Spring rate was slightly too hard, need to aim for 350lb front springs and standard front swaybar 3. Damping is KING. controlling bump and rebound settles the car and makes it feel like you are driving on a cloud. I used a lot of left foot brake to settle the car as much as possible but it still wasn't enough to really push the car or be comfortable when something unexpected comes up. Tein's are not up to Targa driving style and epic MCA's are required. Considered Bilsteins but thing won't be cloud-like enough for a light car. So now I've done my testing with this car it is for sale so I can focus on doing gravel stuff in rally car and making progress on racecar. All proceeds will go towards buying some shocks for racecar. If anyone wants a really cheap quick road legal track/club car let me know. Keen to get around $5k for it.

Speedo is fairly accurate as it was showing 170-175 when I last looked haha We only get to drift this track once a year because of smoke issue etc but its amazing fun, not many places you can be foot flat in 5th on entry and just never lift from the start point

  35. Mate. Grab a manual either in hard form or pdf. Read up on what to do and how to do it. .....then. do it. Best way to learn is to have a go yourself. And if it doesn't work well all you've lost is some time (and pride if that actually bothers you.) You can always part it out after if you have no luck.

  49. Exciting news! Little Viva wagon runs! It sounds quite sweet too. I had a go at getting it to start ages ago but the points and condensor were shot so I gave up. Today I had to move the car from the hoist to make room for an E21 Bimmer that’s in for rust work. With the wagon down on the ground and parked up near the bench I thought I’d get it going and strip out the engine bay while Im there to make better access for the repairs needed. I had been given another dizzy since the last time so I ripped the points and condenser from that, set it up and got sparks. Set up a fuel can and as soon as the carb had fuel it started. Awesome. It revs nice, idles nice and sounds really good. Time will tell once its running and driving as to how good/knackered/tired/gutless it is. Also today whilst between mucking with the ignition and helping a friend with his Saab I pulled the brake servo off, threw away the single circuit master cylinder, pulled the heater out, bonnet hinges off and some other bits in the search for any more rot. Luckily the usual points behind the hinges were solid as was the heater plenum/channel. I will remove the radiator for a tidy up in front of its mountings. I’ll take off the dynamo and throw that in the bin as planning an alternator upgrade. Pictures from this today.. It was raining to start with so perfect excuse to spend day in shed with Hannah and Rowan and tinker with our respective cars.. This next one.. look at that for some lovely hose locating bracketary.. Engine bay cleared out for a looksie.. Tidy heater/ventilation plenum thingee.. Rust hole.. Another hole.. So over the last few weeks, or since the last update, I have been whittling away at a few bits on it while it was up on the hoist. I finished the chassis rail repairs. As suspected the passenger side rail was solid but for a few little holes and around the jacking point/gearbox mount. Its all strong now. Next time its up I’ll clean up and paint it all. Then some decent cavity wax inside. I’ve swapped the alloys over for some old wheels I had kicking about and had the tyres removed so I can weld up/clean up two of the alloys that the have been curbed. It looks horrible on old skinny steels. I look forward to some new tyres and get them Turbos back where they belong! I am planning on getting 175/70 13 so it retains an element of comfort and that slightly older look rather than the more racy 60 series tyres I have on Viva 1. Next rust repairs will be either the engine bay bits whilst its off the hoist or sort the rotten rear valance out when its back up in the air. Luckily for my wallet I have a few jobs coming in. Unluckily for Viva it waits in the queue as its doesn’t pay me money. Im getting quite excited at the prospect of cruising down to the beach/into town with my ropey looking wagon so I think I see a few evenings spent on it now. Its gonna be perfect for mtb trips too J I will have to get a shopping list together now. Things like brake cylinders, seat belts etc. I will be keen on some Chevette front seats too if anyone can help- I hate driving with out headrests plus Chevette seats are really comfy. Im sure this list will grow. Those with Chevettes... expect some requests soon..... Tim, Chris...
