  2. Haven't updated in a while, there has been a lot of work going into the colt recently. I brought some bigger jets because it was running lean and the spark plugs weren't looking good. Having the right main and secondary jets made a big difference in performance. Then a couple of months later i noticed a whining noise from the engine, it was getting louder and then when i went to start it up the engine did a massive buck and the noise turned into a rattle. We thought it was in the gearbox to start with but when we took the sump off there was a collar that holds the balance shaft sitting in there. So that explained the whining noise and the rattle was the balance shaft bouncing around in there. Just lucky it didn't do more damage! The engine builder took the balance shafts out and put sports valve springs in. It did give me a good chance to tidy up the engine bay and engine. I also brought some ssr mk1 wheels for a good price, they weren't in the best condition when i got them so i gave them a good sand and polish and now there sweet as. The repainted engine tidied up the radiator here is the wheels, before I used pumas to get all the rough stuff off, it worked perfect as it shaped to the wheel then used a range of sand paper finishing with 2000 grit and then started polishing and the final result [/url] I also set up some led lights in the interior haha After i got the engine back we took it for a run to Taupo and everything ran smoothly.

  4. It's only been 3 months of no progress, whoops. Oh well, back into it now. Decided against trying to make it out of round tubing so just used some 30x30x2mm RHS as it's much easier. More updates over the next couple of days hopefully.

  5. so did she pass, you bet she passed after the wof dude gave her box a true smashing like I mean I was cringing she was legal once again after four years of hard work, Have a few photos I will share, it even made the journey of 1200km to nelson and tiki touring without any to major hickups, not bad for a engine that was sitting for four years, So yes I defied all the odds people where saying "you cant build a car in under a month" well guess what your wrong because I did plus some Here are some pictures from along the way from getting stuck in a reserve to scenic views

  6. The chassis is now fully welded. It is so much stronger now, hardly twists at all. This is the design I've come up with so far. I was thinking of using 1.25 inch round tubing and getting it all cut out on the tube laser we have at work. It will be double layer like the last image, so there's room for the exhaust etc to go through. In-between will be hoops for the drive shaft as well. Does it sound like a good idea?

  12. So thanks to a lovely chap at the swap meet this weekend I got a free Cortina bootlock which is the same as an escort WINNNNN The lock had no key which was no problem for me as I want to use my escort key How to make your key fit other locks FIrst I pulled the tumbler out and then inserted my key, holding one side of the tumbler you should see prongs protruding, all you basically do is grind those flat so no prongs are protruding, the old key can still open the lock aswell as your key good to know =P. Simply put back together test with key until perfect sorted, this can be done with any barrel tumbler lock. If you want diagrams or more indepthh I can do so

  14. Another moment of stupidity and I'm now the owner of a 32 channel Calrec S analog mixing desk. I figured it's a winter project with the assumption that it's going to freeze over for the next decade and I'll then emerge with a 3ft beard and a completed desk. The unit came with tons of spares, reportedly cost upwards of $750k when purchased in the early 2000's and there won't be a person here that hasn't heard the results of this desk. Its both a bit of NZ broadcasting history and also an interesting project to add to the collection and help to kit out my retro analog sound room/studio when it's completed. In it's current naked state What it's supposed to look like. It takes a truckload of cards like this

  19. Stephen the GC has also kindly enough given me (yes, free) a set of Aussie spec r100 taillights. They are in need of restoration though and i'm in no rush to get these so wont be doing anything to the for a while yet but going to eventually bead blast then and may even get the rings straightened out and rechromed (will probably just paint/powder coat them black as chroming is so fucking expensive). Will also try hunt down some Jap spec lenses. Oh yeah, here's a pic of the front end mocked up again (with the old grille though). With the new flares fitted they fowl with the front lip, looks like we will be trimming the front of the flares slightly, may even notch them to make fit up all gravy (shit picture sorry). Talk shit get hit here //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44085-tai-scamps-mazda-1300/page-2. Tell me what I'm doing wrong. Chur, Tai

  20. I've also picked up these sweet retro racing seats. Luckily they happened to pop up on Gumtree (Aussie Trademe) just 10mins away from where I live. Paid an arm and a leg for them but still much cheaper than getting something similar out of Japan or America. They're a similar style to the optioned Hakosuka Skyline/Datsun 240z seats. They are a very small frame so once again I only just squeeze into them - means I cant get fat and fat cunts wont be able to ride shot gun so no biggy. They also came with one headrest so will need to get another made up as I doubt i'd be able to hunt one down online. Have also hunted down a replacement rear seat as my original was stolen. They will be getting retrimmed at some stage to match the fronts .

  21. OK so it's about time I update this thing. There was very slow progress over the xmas/nye period but now things have got a back on track. Onc again we have had more fucking around issues with the guards but it looks like it's all going to work out. Going from the previous post we could only adapt the rear flares to suit as the fronts were too askew to fit up half decent. I was able to sort out another set of flares for a very good price from GC Stephen (hooked me up with the first set) however even though they were based off the same Group C Mazda RX3, these ones had come from a different company (fibremaster in Aus), whereas the first set were out of Japan. If you look closely at the picture (sorry shit picture) you will see that the dont have the little lip at the bottom, they are also of much poorer quality and are a bit more warped. When we first tried to match them up to the car we were thinking about getting rid of them and getting a full custom set moulded up by a local fibreglass champ but after umming and ahhing and some more stuffing around we were able to trim them back and get them mounted. As they are slightly smaller in profile they have been fitted to the front and the originals have been changed to the rear.

  24. Then while I had space in the shed, I thought I'd mount the engine on a stand and tackle the stuck drain plugs... First one was textbook, welded on a large nut, and the heat and something to grip let me twist it out no bother. Fuck I'm good (I thought)... The other one however was a right crunt. Welded nut after nut onto it, and the metal of the plug kept fracturing as I tried to take it out... Tried upping the current for more penetration but it seemed the plug metal was pretty brittle... When there was fuck-all to weld to I ended up grinding it flat and punching it to try to drill it out... Drilled it through (fuckin hard stuff, whatever it was) and upped the drill size till I could try an ezy-out. I've had mixed results with these, so hit it with more heat to try to avoid snapping the hardened tool... But still no go. Ended up drilling it right out and tapping it inwards with a centre punch to crack the thread... and finally got the fucker... So here's me at the puter now having a well deserved dram... and yes, that bottle's empty so just cracked an Ardmore single malt...

  25. Decided to do a bit straight after work as it was warm and windy, so good chance to wheel things outside and get the water blaster out... Amazing how easy it is to knock the grease off with a decent blaster... Surprised how good things were under there, pleased I made the effort while the guts were out of the way...

  28. Here is a view of the bathroom area closed in, looking from middle of truck to the rear door. I have installed a one piece molded fiberglass shower stall, acrylic free zone!! (must be the boat builder in me) The balance of the bathroom has a false bulkhead across the rear which will be accessed from the outside, this has also allowed for a built in cupboard that will be above the vanity, toilet will be opposite the shower stall. Push out, even managed some wiring for lights Here's a view of the push out pushed in, windows have yet to be cut out. There is a roller set mounted beneath the push out located on the floor at the out side wall line, the front rollers are rubber and soft enough to not mark the floor. The unit locks out on 4 x 20mm stainless steel pins that push into the wall frames. I have purchased a 2 1/2 seat Divan type lounge settee that sits in this push out, the settee converts to a double bed for the occasional guest. The facing trim around the push out will be solid timber and has yet to be installed.

  29. My old mighty 81 vauxhall Chevette with a little twist to it. Bought this car 3 years ago for my sons first car all stock standard. Few months later, it blew a head gasket. We decided to strip the engine down and to sell off in parts. I had decided to take it off his hands and have been looking for a project for a while. I found a Nissan sr20de engine with 5 speed gearbox that had been worked on, lots of money spent on the motor with forged internals etc.. And bought this engine for a cheap price! The first time the engine was going to be placed into the car, the sump needed to be tubbed so it could fit over the x member and an oil cooler was fitted to give it extra capacity for oil. Custom radiator was fitted, front brakes and callipers had to be changed to Audi rotors and holden Astra callipers for it to actually stop!! The good thing about this car is that it is all certified!Heavy duty clutch also fitted in and lightened flywheel. The whole build took just over a year to get it all certified. Surge tank, high volume petrol pump and battery are in the boot. She has never had any problems, never broken down, and runs extremely nicely! Good change from 50hp to 180hp.Drives and handles well and surprises a lot of people

  30. So I got this beast done in time, Got to the show thursday arvo after replacing the rectifyer which drained the battery. I had a trouble free weekend except for a snapped spring that I welded back together, drove it pretty much all night and had it on show all day from thursday to sunday. It was well recived I took alot of random people for rides and it seemed to have the biggest crowds looking at it, oh and after a couple drinks it found alot of limiter. I had an interview with a magazie and got stopped while cruiseing for photos with streetmachine and a couple others so hopefully with get some sweet magazine photos and didnt quite win anything but got a consilation prize during prize giving for best contraption and the organiser wanted to give me best motorbike but wasnt allowed haha people enjoyed the terribly bumpy ride Racing against a motorbike powered golf cart Bambi fell in love with an Italian hunk

  35. So got the car back from the painters and its looking sweet, the color came out exactly how i pictured it. The color shows off the lines much better than bogan black I cleaned up the bumpers and painted the back of them before after cleaned and painted the grill as well I tidied up some wires in the engine bay, it looks a lot cleaner now before after before we put the front end back on with the bumper and grill on its starting to take shape now with every piece we put back on. Carpets going in today, then its pretty much the interior to go back in and get a wof.

  37. I probably do some work on all of them at least 3 times a week. I've just come out of a three month non stop Lock up and car blitz with Neil, We emptied a quite simply stunning amount of stuff from the Lock up, repaired my Mitsi Ute, and wof'd and reg'd it for Drag day, pulled apart two 1974 Fairlane's (wait till you see them!) and got my Viva ready to put the engine in. We also bought two utefulls of classic push Bikes, sold 8 Motorbikes, Bought a 1977 Gs850, shipped 3 cars from all over New Zealand, Picked up the Oxford, started on a Red Bull Trolly, Bought picked up and moved 5 engines and put a P76 4.4 litre V8 in a 1982 SD1 after rebuilding a complete bottom end and failing to find a six cylinder head to complete it. I also rebuilt a 1982 Daimler Sovreign that had been left in someones garden for 5 years into a running driving wof'd and reg'd car and sold it. Organised massive amount of work on the Mustang, Moved the Caprice from Las Vegas to Winslow AZ to be race prepaired, Organised Hotels at both ends of the C2C and signed the contracts. I also looked at maybe 20 sections for sale around Auckland and the Waikato, and had to read up on the planning law surrounding them, check out the Auckland district plan, and arrainge finance to actually buy one! I also helped Ed buy an RX7 in San Francisco, and a Dodge van for me to ferry C2C folks around, sort a trip to the UK for two weeks in March, and move my pension from the UK to Kiwi saver. On top of this I worked mostly 6 days a week running a business and ran 3 Facebook pages for car fans. I start work at 8:30am work till 18:30 spend 3-4 hours at the lock up and then complete the rest of the things I need to do at home till 1-2am. Thats been my last three months, I know there's about a million things I've forgotton too. Man I know that thats a looooong answer, but it kinda points out how busy I am!!!!

  38. Following on from the discussion thread that I started where I had decided to change the engine out for something that is a touch friendlier on my wallet at the pump and wanted some ideas on possible swaps..... //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/34432-economical-engine-for-my-viva-suggestionsadvice-please/page__st__0 I have decided to have a good crack at fitting a lovely quad cam 24valve all alloy Mazda K series V6. I know it wont be as cheap to run as some other suggestions but it'll be cool. It will definitely be cheaper to run overall then the rotary. And I'm expecting it'll sound wicked. Certainly a bit more involved than the other option I had in second place which was a turbo'd Mx5 1.8. But I'm really looking forwards to some of the mini challenges that will pop up. Ideally it'll be the K8 ZE 1.8 (144bhp) or a KF ZE 2L (160bhp). I think the KL DE or ZE 2.5 ones might be too thirsty. But can always be fitted later- all the engines are the same external size - which is nice. So I left work early on friday and went to wreckers to measure up V6... ... showing the horrible ugly inlet manifold. I would not be using this- I have some good ideas floating about in my head on how to make a neat plenum setup. For other people who might be interested in these engines- here are the measurements I took. Its very compact for a V6. I did some measuring in my Viva engine bay today. It looks good. I have 140mm in front of the crank pulley which is more than enough for a radiator and fans. The NS cam bank will either just nudge the brake servo or it'll clear. I can 'manipulate' the servo brackets and shift it sideways another 30mm anyhow. The top of the v6 manifold should be no higher than the current alternator position so I have plenty of room there. The cam housings/ heads sit away from the bulk head by 100mm so enough room to use stock dizzy out back. Plus heads clear the clutch master. The stock V6 is a front sump as is the rotary. How handy. The V6 sump is deeper above the crossmember but I would reshape it and have a bigger winged pan for extra oil. I measured a friends rotary flywheel up. The rotary flywheel sits just 5 mm further away from the block- easy to sort when I make a flywheel spacer to suit whichever thickness engine to bell housing adaptor ring I make. Only problem is the rotary flywheel is 20mm larger in dia than the 1.8 V6 item. I know that others have used rx7 bell housings on V6 conversions so perhaps the larger 2.0 or 2.5 engines have a bigger flywheel diameter? So it's looking good. I almost bought a complete mazda mx5 today- cheap but reg on hold and no wof. I decided not to risk it and instead continued looking for a cheap engine by itself. Half an hour later, after I had gotten off the phone to tell the fella in chch I wasn't going to buy his mx6, I found this bargain on trademe ending 2 hours later.... http://www.trademe.c...px?id=521174964 Which I have just bought. Its a K8 1.8 but I think being a Jap import it'll be the 144bhp ZE model plus it has all the parts I need to start with. At $200 its worth the punt. I'll just tow it to my parents and start striping it down next weekend. Then I can weigh the engine as finding a reliable weight for these engines on nerdnet has been tricky. Very chuffed. Looking at a cheap KF 2.0L elsewhere too- again a JDM model with 160bhp. Hopefully I'll score that too. So for now this looks like the way I'll go. I am in no rush to pull the rotary out- instead I'll borrow a friends rx7 box and start making an adaptor plate to suit and any other bits that need sorting out. What I really do want to do is post up as much info on these engines and the modifications needed so people reading this thread can try them in other cars too. They seem pretty cheap to buy and so far seem like a really nice alternative to the norm out there. .

  39. So this is what I'm going for engine wise. If anyone can tell me what that supercharger there is, then cool. Ideally I'd like the Lysholm 1200AX but the one I saw for sale on the Tard was $2,500. Bit out of my budget for the time being.
