  1. Nick the sparky came over last night and did some wires. the wiring on this thing was really fucked, there was just shit going everywhere and things linked that should not be linked etc so Nick has pretty much re-wired the front part of the car. the lights/indicator loom wasnt too bad but hes tidied that up and looped the high/low circuits so all four headlights work as high/low. the engine loom is in two parts now with the computer loom being separate and the power feeds/alternator/starter trigger/gauge feeds all being together and running in their own loom. it is pretty tidy now with just a few things needing hooking up under the dash to get the motor running. oh, while Nick was practicing being a choice cunt he also reco'd the starter and the alternator so they're both brand new now too. but last thing last night he started going on about mopars so i cut his head off and rested it on the dash, as you can see in this picture, 2016-01-28_08-57-45 by sheepers, on Flickr

  2. First run was this one, against a mates MR2, he ran his first 13 second pass with fresh motor/turbo build. I was slower. A lot slower. First time ever drag racing, I managed to miss 3rd and came in at 21.5 seconds. Ran 4 more passes, all were between 19.8 and 19.4, about what I was expecting/hoping for. Nothing spectacular but it's a 50+ year old car with a stock hilux motor and a 350 Holley. I was happy, and had HEAPS of fun Last run was this, the quickest/fastest of the night:

  4. Thought i'd follow up on this, ended up buying a davies craig 281x112mm cooler, came with just enough hose to replace the whole low pressure hardline loop which went up to the front of the car(Was kinda bent anyway). Mounted up easy with the included parts, cant comment on its performance yet as i have only had a short drive up my driveway so far.

  5. Well, well nothing to exciting has really happened to the Escort, I mean i havent done anything exciting to the Escort. Its in at Hewie's Garage in Dannevirke getting all of the panel work pristine so stay frosty. To pass the time over the christmas break was really me sorting the Cortina out to haul back down to Christchurch and making a custom dash cluster for the Escort which ive made out of MX5 bits, anyway to pictures... So bought a normal 'L' cluster and got the hole saw out for two 45mm holes Broke off the original plastic mounts and re glued them to suit the MX5 gauge mount points. Was a near perfect fit with me having to dremel some of the plastic on the back. And the finished product, needed a lick of black satin to clean up the new cut holes. Overall the gauges are a bloody good fit and suit the escort pretty well. Hopefully more updates pretty soon once the panel beating is all done but to do list FE3 + Gbox mounted and running Dash pad reupholster Nardi Torino Rear leaf reset Brakes/hydraulic system sorted Slam and wheels J-W-G

  8. MK2 UPDEIGHT08 These past few weeks have been a mixture of excitement, confusion, and overall joy as cosmetic restoration of lil 808 continues. The pictures sum it up but for those who prefer to read I'll attempt to explain how I went on a feel trip completing this just in time for Leadfoot & REunion... Inspiration began: Became a proud owner of a Mazda Japan chrome eyebrow (to complete the top chrome). Massive thanks to Craig OLDMAZ Most of the parts to complete it: boot spoiler, fender mirrors from Rtid, lowering blocks from Stephen rot808, and nuts from Scotty BRDFLU and my fish flag from the Bosozoku at Daikoku Futo PA I also received a pair of lowering springs from my parents. So in my mind I thought "sweet as! chuck the wheels on, chuck the spoiler on, fit the springs and blocks, put the fender mirrors on and good to go!" however... Firstly, I looked closely and noticed my boot wasn't flush to the sides so would provide an uneven base for a spoiler. This required a day of gentle persuasion (hammering shit out of it) and soft speaking (cursing wildly). Ok boot was sitting right now so I booked in to get a warrant, and booked in to get the spoiler shaped by Paul Weir... I started it up, very excited as hadn't heard it in a few months and went to leave the garage to get to my warrant in time, but the problem was just that. I couldn't leave the garage. I ran upstairs to get Dad and what happened next was one of my fondest memories regardless of the situation. Dad just kept trying to move it out by doing burnouts on the garage floor filling the house with smoke. The warrant was out of the question but the memory made up for it. Found out later in the day my front wheels pushed hard against the brakes and were completely stiff! So I got my warrant, and I got the first part of the spoiler shaping done by Paul, all was going to plan! Until I put the lowering springs in. Note: if you buy a rotary, chances are the previous owner has already cut your "standard" springs by at least 1 inch. My way of finding this out was putting in my new lowered springs, and looking in horror at the tape measure that stated I had in fact raised the car by 20mm. So off they went to Christchurch on overnight delivery last Wednesday, and returned back to me on the Friday morning, impressive. Meanwhile as all this is happening, the fender mirror springs are being shipped from Thailand (expected delivery of 3 days took 3 weeks), we spent more time with Paul fixing up spoiler number 2 for Rod Millen's RX3 that I picked up halfway to Hahei, and the lowering blocks were getting reshaped from Dad due to a whacky centre hole. So yes, the drama is (hopefully) over for now, unfortunately can't get the mirrors on in time but have made that priority for weeks after REunion. Thanks to Stephen & Paul Weir we got the wheels on nicely, the boot sitting flush, the spoiler shaped in time, and the lowering springs and blocks in ready for it's unveil at Leadfoot Festival. (let's also mention the 4 hours I spent cleaning, polishing, and auto-soling to have it heavy rain on the drive home) And here are the pictures of the process involved: Shaping the spoiler to fit Fitting Rod Millen's spoiler Paul Weir fiberglassing Rod's spoiler Bare bum before Rod's spoiler (to be painted and stickered for Leadfoot Festival) My spoiler fitted 20mm higher than before The ideal low, thanks to Stephen for risking your nose for this shot So that's all for the next few weeks! Should be at Caffeine and Classics this weekend, Leadfoot Festival next weekend, and REunion the weekend following! ありがとう

  10. Been busy this week, but trying to do a little bit when I can. Not sure where the trans seepage is coming from so will pull it out and give it a cleanup and filter change while I have the opportunity. I removed the shift linkages, vacuum pipe, kickdown cable and neutral switch wiring. There's no easy way to drain these things, so just crawled under and cracked the pan... Thar she blows... Looks ok inside, and I must be getting better at this with age, only got oily from the wrists down this time. (I love the smell of trans fluid in the evening)... And I chucked the pan back on and drained the torque converter too. Only really the driveshaft and main mounting bolts to remove now and things should be ready to lift...

  12. My old mighty 81 vauxhall Chevette with a little twist to it. Bought this car 3 years ago for my sons first car all stock standard. Few months later, it blew a head gasket. We decided to strip the engine down and to sell off in parts. I had decided to take it off his hands and have been looking for a project for a while. I found a Nissan sr20de engine with 5 speed gearbox that had been worked on, lots of money spent on the motor with forged internals etc.. And bought this engine for a cheap price! The first time the engine was going to be placed into the car, the sump needed to be tubbed so it could fit over the x member and an oil cooler was fitted to give it extra capacity for oil. Custom radiator was fitted, front brakes and callipers had to be changed to Audi rotors and holden Astra callipers for it to actually stop!! The good thing about this car is that it is all certified!Heavy duty clutch also fitted in and lightened flywheel. The whole build took just over a year to get it all certified. Surge tank, high volume petrol pump and battery are in the boot. She has never had any problems, never broken down, and runs extremely nicely! Good change from 50hp to 180hp.Drives and handles well and surprises a lot of people

  16. I've just done this for a friend. Is a bit of a pain in the arse getting it approved. They don't want it to be used as a one-off approval for each person but more for companies making kits for cars/bringing stuff in for popular models. Talk to your friendly certifier. There are different levels of certifiers too so make sure you find out who does scratch builds in your area and talk to them. I'll find the requirements for the drawings and out some pics up. They can be drawn on paper (don't need to be CAD necessary but does make it nicer)

  17. Yeah another way is to hold a big crescent on the nut and tap the handle on the ground. But Suzuki recessed the super thin nut on these so I couldn't get a spanner or the vice jaws on it. Am happy enough with paying $14 for the socket from BNT though, way better than the $32 SCA want lol Hey have you still got that UZ50 injector/TB etc? I'm pretty sure that I have got the rest of the motor and ECU etc here, went to rob a couple of bits off that "GY6" I brought from you the other day and realized it has a multi pick up flywheel and has Suzuki's name for Nicasil cast on the bore. Cut up the bracket today and bent the pipe away from the wheel a bit Thinking of getting the pipe Milspec coated through work to prevent any rust issues in future. Pulled the clutch to bits and found that my uprated springs are way to big, but fit in the factory 2 arm clutch fine so have swapped it back for now Upjetted the carb and tried to test ride, realized the variator rollers where way to heavy before I even left the driveway Made them lighter Ended up at 4.3g, still too heavy though as it's only just starting to come up into it's power band now. Thinking 4g might work nicely, will order a new set once I find the ideal weight.

  19. Sorry I was posting on my phone and didn't see this. Acetone is just one of the many solvents you can use, in consumer quantaties it is fairly expensive to use for general cleaning, although it will help remove tar etc. Sorry if you don' t want to scratch the chrome then how will the paint stick? I just assumed you were dealing with fucked chrome hence the paint.

  22. *** be careful of using alkaline based stuff on unprotected polished alloys. They won't be polished afterwards.

  23. Even better use scotch brite and solvent (like thinners) it will melt tar/everything and prep the surface.

  24. It's a caustic solution of some kind. A strong solvent will work at least 1000 times better.

  27. Was getting pic heavy, so 2 posts! The new exhaust had left Deutschland on the 16th of December, as it was the holidays I wasn't too surprised when 6-10 days came and went, but when it went from days late to weeks late I started getting a little nervous, a month late I got hold of racing planet and after another week or so of asking me to have more patience they got DHL to launch an investigation, 2 days later it got to NZ then another 3 days it got to me today where it finally arrived! Looking like it's been on a bit of an adventure Inner box wasn't as bad, but you can see where the pipe has tried to escape the bottom of the box Looks mint though, fitted the silencer to it and then had to go back to work rather than install it So yeah attempted install tonight Bracket needs work to fit the engine and the pipe is slightly bent so even if it did fit the engine the bracket wouldn't line up between the pipe and engine. There is meant to be room for a spacer between the pipe and the mounting bracket, so I think it's going to be a case of heating the head pipe up and giving it a bit of a tweak outwards to gain clearance. The bracket should work out after a bit of angle grinder surgery lol And once again I still can't believe how well it was running with this pipe!! Tomorrow I'll hopefully have time to finish mounting it up and start tuning it. Also need to get hold of a 34mm socket to change the clutch springs.

  31. Cats out of the bag then eh? Thus my strong words that FSAE is the best thing I've done, ever, period (except meeting Laura and getting married, yaadaa yaadaa yaadaa). If you get the chance, get involved. The people are Awesome. The competition is Awesome. The cars are Awesome. This job is a unicorn, and so far it's every bit the dream I was hoping it would be. I did get another job offer out of being involved with FSAE. Not automotive related, and more 'conventional', but still an amazing graduate position. The opportunities are out there. Get involved. Do it. Also, that article makes David seems marginally arrogant. He's really not, he's a bloody smart dude, and knows what he wants, which we're there to help him achieve. He's got a good sense of humour, and is a car nut like the rest of us. One of the other guys that has come on board was working on his supercharged MX5 in the workshop this evening, and David was right there alongside, talking car shit with us. Good times.

  32. I rate this a solid 8 out of 10 and would get a 9 out of 10 if you did something about straightening up the camber on the front wheels. It makes it look a lot weird.

  33. 351c into XF falcon. Because XE came out with a v8 and had the exact same brakes etc (as far as im aware) will i have to upgrade anything to get a cert apart from a driveshaft loop? No engine/trans mounts have to be modified or anything, so easy because the previous models had them factory.

  34. i did a few more bits and pieces on the car today. i lengthened the lower control arms on the diff to get a bit more clearance between the driveshaft and the floor and a few other little things. then i lowered the car off the jack and realized that the car was sitting lower on one side than the other. a quick measure confirmed it was 20mm lower on the right rear. i jacked it up and took the rear wheels off and found that the right rear spring perch had unwound itself and was 20mm lower that the left side. all of a sudden all of the weird things the car had been doing made sense. when i moved the tunnel up at the back to clear the bigger diff i left lots of room so the driveshaft/diff nose would never hit the floor. but somehow a couple of months ago it did. that was really strange at the time. i couldn't understand how it had done that given how much room id made for everything. there was other stuff too, like I've been adjusting the panhard bar to stop the outside wheel from rubbing but i seemed to be moving it backwards and forwards and not getting a consistent result. it always touched on the outside. i don't know how long its been like this but given the amount of crap in the threads id say a long time, perhaps over a year. its been hitting the bump on the right side almost constantly which explains its weird feeling turning left. i also wonder if the weird experiences i had with the T1Rs weren't exasperated by this? who knows. i can't believe I've never noticed it before. once i measured it it was obviously on the piss. i guess I've been fairly focused on getting the red car done and not really paying much attention to fuck all else. anywho, its fixed now and feels like a completely different car. a better one for sure.

  36. The last few weeks have been pretty shit. Our dog 'Bear', affectionately known as 'Piggy', who was a massive part of our lives got hit by a car. He came with us everywhere and lived in the house with us and watched TV on the couch with us and was just with us constantly like a child. So without him has been real shit. I keep having these oh no I've forgotten about piggy moments cause he was with me all the time. Losing the pig combined with thinking about whether to chuck in farming and move back to chch to go engineering again has left me with very little motivation for work on the car.

  37. eventually i got sick of the bonnet scoop, so i got a panel/paint guy i know to sort it out. it was meant to be ready for a combined photoshoot me and the gf were getting for our cars, long story short it ended up with a matt black bonnet for a couple of months and the guy who did it charged me a decent amount over what he quoted. have to admit he did a great job though. i actually liked it with the matt black bonnet, was definitely not the end result i was looking for though so much cleaner without the crappy bonnet scoop!!! gf's RA28 in the background, those who toyota together???
