sure its not stressed out? not since it was bent 10 ish mm . . . . it will be fine as long as you don't heat it up to much . . . . . Toyota steel is much better than china spec . . . . . are you lot serious? just read all of the comments and think about this for a minuet !! this is the bit that connects you to your steering . there are reasons why you don't straighten them, heat them, or repair them. its cause IF THEY BREAK YOU ARE IN THE FUCKING SHIT5 points

The guy would have the shit beat out of him? Nobody can give an accurate answer to that question of whether it would fail or not. In all honestly probably not. We chop and weld steering components all the time with drifting they get ndt'd and are accepted by msnz with the supporting paper work. Have they broken? Mine no but many have usually from impact. Its ok tho as we sign out lives away when we go out. if you get killed or kill somebody (and yes that also happens) you knew the risks so did your family tough shit. The poor guy traveling to the dairy to get milk for his wives tea didn't sign his life away tho. he infact did everything properly with regular maintenance keeping his car upto wof standard. But gets killed due to xyz breaking off some other dudes car because he thought it was ok to do so. Even tho it wasn't illegal to do so. He still fucked it up now theres a guy paying the ultimate price.... Get where im going3 points

I knew this would turn to shit. as soon as I said it shouldn't be done , I knew all the people would find some shit to argue with , make a big deal about it . turn it into a argument of what can and cant be done. blar blar blar but its the law its the law because you have to cater for dumb fucks who kill people from being ignorant and stupid . AND DOING IT WRONG! something you may have over looked , not everyone knows "how hot to make it" I didn't make the law, but its there and that is it. look at certifiers and the hoops you have to jump through to get a cert. they wont touch cast/heated/welded/fucked with. this guy asked for some help , you guys were giving him bad advice , so I said something. simple as that.3 points

more removal of the things. will get a glass guy to remove the windows i think. probably cheaper to do that than break them. no big rusty surprises hiding which was good i knew this bit was lurking not much more to come out of it. will probably make some sort of frame so i can flip it on its side or upside down to do the underneath stuff. also have to decide how to tackle the body- i might get it properly blasted and primed. im going to fix the rusty bits myself but i will give it to a panelsmasher to get it straight and paint it. also been looking at other mods im going to do engine wise- current plan includes a new exhaust, might use some of these or similar, they are for a dodge truck. turned around and the collector shortened and re angled, should be able to make the pre turbo part of the exhaust shorter, and flow & sound better3 points

Heat it up and straighten it in a press, it isn't ideal but chances are you will get away with it. It really isn't that dodgy, people have been straightening things for years with no ill effects, basically it is just scare mongering from people who have very little knowledge in positions of power. Even if you don't get away with it the worst that is going to happen is that the caster will pull that wheel straight and you will have to pull to the side of the road steering with one wheel, no big deal really. To get past the wof brigade just wire wheel and paint and no one will know.3 points

heres some relevant info on welding struts together that have cast/forged bits http://www.lvvta.org.nz/documents/infosheets/LVVTA_Info_05-2012_Welded_Aftermarket_Suspension_Struts.pdf as far as i know, none of these struts have been approved, one manufacturer had one tested, it failed, they modified the welding process and tried again, still no good, so they basically said "fuck this, NZ is a tiny market, CBF" and didnt bother any more2 points

Right you lot. End of the day it's written in the wof rules that you will fail a wof if a steering or suspension component "shows signs of welding or heating after original manufacture" Here's the relevant page http://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/general/steering-and-suspension/steering-and-suspension-systems2 points

The old girls been putting along and the little 1600 Kent moves her very nicely, even made the trip from CHCH to Palmy over the Christmas break without a hitch, I recently had to do the head gasket as it popped and was making massey ferguson noises all over Wellington CBD. Ive also rebuilt the starter motor. Lately ive been acquiring parts for this girl consisting of an Aussie 6cyl diff (Falcon internals), Not one but 2 pre facelift GT/GXL Dashes/Centre consoles, New old stock guards, Grill. I also got a set of NOS Lucas Ranger spotlights in perfect condition, even had the switch to accompany them! Plans for the Tina have Manifested to me wanting to put a 302 Windsor in her with an off the self kit, but for the sort term it will be to fit the GT dash, fit a set of tombstone seats2 points

so, the other side. i ground back the massive amounts of bog to see what was hidden benith. no surprise, a few very bad repairs. Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr this is how thick the bog is on the sill. i might have to make a whole new sill but we'll see when i strip the rest back. Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr this is a rusty bit at the top of the arch. Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr so its not as bad as the other side which will make life easier. ill start on this side tomorrow if everything goes to plan.2 points

Please say you are still going to put a fake browning .30MG and a dummy ammo belt coming up through the front guard like in the picture? Don't see that style on the road anymore.2 points

lol really , this is some sort of justification to repairing a cast steering components ??? is your axel directing the vehicle? is your axel about 130mm long and bent 10mm??? common , just think about it its really a simple thing to grasp here, look at all the things that could go wrong how many people could be killed. just if this one thing fails from a repair that you cant be sure is a good solid repair . its not illegal cause the there is a 0.5% chance that it would fail, its illegal cause you don't know if the repair has been done successfully, and its been proven time and time again that it can fail . this isn't something you can measure with a tape measure or tools from home. you haven't got any of the NDT testing or x ray inspection , you have a willy nilly "don't heat it up to much" type of answer . this shouldn't even be an argument , its ridiculous . , go have a Google , go do some research of metallurgical science, find out for your self why its illegal . we as a car community shouldn't be condoning bad practice, we are here to inform and help each other . Im not going to argue about this any more. I feel what I have said should be enough for anyone to grasp the seriousness of this topic. don't muck around with cast steering stuff its just not worth it. just throw it in the bin and get a new one.2 points

look at all the work you have done to your car, think about the implications of your steering braking whilst going somewhere, or if you are on the motorway ? look at the all the work you have done going down the toilet if it does go wrong,. what happens if you take out a car full of people from crossing the center line? im not going to argue about the strength of cast components, before or after being bent then heated and straightened, or how you can have success at straightening it . because there is no NDT testing or any way to prove that you are right . this stuff can fail that is why its not meant to be done . this is a proven fact . this is why its law. its to keep everyone safe cause no one can be sure the repair is sound . don't be ignorant and say its safe , its illegal to repair for a reason the point is if it goes wrong and you have tried to repair it , then its your fault. is all your work worth a easy replacement part? or someone's lives ? just think about it, its not a expensive part to replace2 points

nope, from a legal point of view, still cant weld it to a casting, doesnt matter weather its someone who knows what they are doing, or if its crack tested.1 point

Crikey this got outta hand lol The reasoning for the whole thread was to get advice from an experienced engineer in whether or not there can be a safe way in straightening a cast steering arm. I do realise it is illegal by the books, but same with welding your steering hubs to coilovers, UNLESS it is welded by someone who knows what theyre doing and is crack tested. Which brings me to another question, could it at all be non destructively crack tested to ensure its safety or is this a whole different path?1 point

yes. with only minimal skill its completely safe and directly in the same catagory as changing 13 inch steels to 16 inch alloys without certification.1 point

Mark got the engine back together and it's up and running again, as promised. I picked it up tonight, and will be getting it re-dynotuned before I take it to another track day soon. A short test drive showed that the car runs a lot smoother than before, and definitely has more power/torque down below. Smells wicked on Mark's premix too.1 point

So with the monumental help of Mike-E, I managed to get the car safely up to auckland. Loaded the car on first... Then filled it with shit... Put tables and an engine hoist on the trailer too... Thanks Marshall Profiling! In the end, I towed the car trailer up with my partners Landcruiser - it didn't do too badly at all! And here the Disiesel is all safely in it's new home: I kid you not, unloading this thing was such a fucking mission - it took from about 9ish until midnight - I had to reverse up this mega steep driveway, then detach the trailer and jack it up enough for the car to start rolling back, then gradually shimmy the trailer out from under the car. Pretty much by myself too cos my girlfriend has a broken ankle and wrist! Ahhhh fun!1 point

finally got some motivation to get back into this so stripped the well side back to bare metal and removed the old plain tailgate and got the mazda embossed one on i stripped all the sides back to bare steel and cleaned up the inside of the tray and painted it all black the new tailgate has no hooks on it and it looks way more cleaner in my opinion so i removed them (they were in bad condition to and had started to get rust hole in the tips) then i etch primed all the bare metal to seal it off, all in all its not in to bad condition some areas need a bit of attention to try straighten up or it may be easier to make up some new pieces to stitch in need to strip the tailgate next, also bench seat is almost finished getting upholstered looking forward to getting that back1 point

I've also been looking at gsp trackers for my cars. I'd like one with an internal battery preferably if anyone knows of one. Another thing I've been looking at is hidden cameras front and rear and a drivers side external microphone with a constant recording setup that overwrites old data as it records. Why you may ask? Well chch police have been on the abusive psychopath side of late and I'd really like to get it on camera so something is done about it. Last ticket I got I was 6 days out on my wof and the policeboy told me to "shut the fuck up" after I asked would he consider giving me compliance as the car had been off the road for 4 months(i had the car wof 2 days later, clean sheet). He ended up calming down a bit and gave me compliance how ever this is just another in the stream of bs I've had to deal with driving a vintage car. One time I got a seat belt fine while wearing my seatbelt, true story. The Christchurch traffic police are off the rails.1 point

5) Suspension I managed to pick up a full set of brand new Gaz adjustable dampers for the front and rear and managed to treat myself to a new set of coilovers which suited way better to my needs. This was the front set up before welding. Specs are 220lb springs, followed with keeper springs and adapted Cusco Evo strut camber plates. Struts after welding. Vern had to machine out the spring tops to accept the Gaz inserts, then lathe up some spacers to take the camber plates. Further the camber plates had the be redrilled to the Escort "small hole" PCD of 95mm. After a small bit of massaging the bolt holes i got the strut tops in followed by... The TX3 Turbo rotors were a bolt on fit and take up the whole pad of the Princess calipers which is bloody great, also the rotors are a shit ton cheaper then Capri vented ones at $50 for two. The rear ended up looking like this... The spring plates needed a quick weld up and redrill to accept the larger Courier/B1600 U-Bolts. Plans from now. Right now the car is nearly rolling. I just need a set of wheel studs to get it on some wheels so i can move it outside to do some work on it while having a beer and getting a tan. Just waiting on a shipment from the UK with some flash new parts for the front end. For the rear just waiting for the new year to get the leafs reset for a 2inch drop, sand blast and powdercoat (Suggestions?). Stay tuned for what ive been doing to the engine, its getting there but its got some cool stuff to do with itb manifolds and a lush stainless octopus hanging off the side... J-W-G1 point
