  1. continued... Fixing it bit by bit wasn't really working so i bit the bullet in May this year and stripped it down and sent it to a panel shop to be fixed. (6 1/2 hours drive to drop it off) New wheels 1st - to get the body massaged to make them fit Dropped off at BigA's dads shop to get all fixed up. Nice to have 2 Celica liftback's together (BigA's RA25 in the background) Some of the work done - very pleased

  2. Hard to believe it's been 15 months since my last post of this project! Crashed computers, new baby, work.....but pretty sure you don't want to hear any weak excuses so I will do a quick pic dump to show how the car came out. My goal was to have it ready for the road by Labour Weekend last year to make it to the Vauxhall Nationals in Tauranga, which I did, with just a week to spare. This didn't leave much time for road testing, but I had no need for worry as it made the trip from Nelson to Tauranga and back without missing a beat. Anyway, this is here all put back together. This is when I pushed her outside for first time with most of the assembly done but minus the headlight lenses and bumpers. ` Then I had later model reclinable seats bolstered up for more lateral support and painted them with vinyl paint. Old versus new. Getting close to all done at this stage. Lights working! Interior shot. Not great but you get the idea. Some pics of the car beside some other flat front Firenza's at the nationals in Tauranga. And some pics on our way back down the North Island. So I have barely done a thing to the car since then except put some more miles on it and plan the final stage, which is the engine and engine bay, which is still green. The plan had been to build up a good 2300 slant motor with some goodies I have collected over last few years...but then this little gem came up on TM and it was too tempting to pass up... This is a Lotus 907 all alloy twin cam 2.0L out of a Jensen Healey. These engines are basically an alloy version of the Vauxhall unit, but with the extra cam. Lotus actually developed the head on the iron Vauxhall block before casting their own alloy blocks. They are rated at about 140hp and considerably lighter than the Vauxhall unit. You can install the Vauxhall 2.3 crank to strock it up to 2.2L. It is a bit of an unknown as far as condition, but I have hooked up a starter motor and battery to do a compression test and it came up good on 3 cylinders, with the 4th a little low, but hopefully that will come up with some use. Regardless it should run. It just needs a few bits like headers and water pump. The sump will have to be cut around the crossmember too, which is the biggest job. Luckily it came with a twin sidedraft manifold and I have a new set of 45 Webers to go with that. Could resist mocking those up for a quick pic too. So that's where I am up to with this, just sorting the bits needed to complete the conversion and then to rope Alex (yoeddy) into doing the tricky bits for me. Hopefully this stage won't take another 15 months... better pull finger!

  3. Ok, so a little light at the end of the tunnel, have been trying to do stuff over the phone because work. Went into blackwells mazda this morning and talked to a couple of sales blokes both of which knew about the 121/rx5, said to come back on monday as the only person who can write the conformation letter is the parts manager, a guy called wayne.. so armed with the confirmation through carjam that my motor is indeed out of a 121 I should be able to pass my safety check.. here's hoping. I conducted a random act of kindness yesterday by changing the tyre on a 1500 beetle for a milf in distress.. hopefully with karma the way it is it will pay me back in registration hahaha..

  4. So .. I've been mega slack at putting up anything to do with my own cars... The current project that is in most pieces and getting serious work done is my rare 1977 Toyota Celica GTV LB (liftback) The story so far....... This was as purchased by my father many years ago. It was used as a service vehicle for my other 1977 Celica GT rally car. Dad always had issues with the engine timing and it never ran right. It was put in dry storage for many years until i decided i needed yet another project and brought it off him. First thing I did was found the engine was rather rooted and untuneable so over christmas i pulled the old 18RG and dropped an unknown spare we had purchased into the hole. Tidied it up while i was in there With a bit of messing about with carbs and tuning, it was running sweeter than ever. I have never liked tridents as mag wheels so swapped them out for a set of Bridgestone Zona -Spoke10 wheels i had around. I thought was a nice improvement. Also lowered it a little onto king superlow springs .. All was good for a year and a half until disaster struck On my way to visit sheepers one night, a van backed into the front of it and bending it Thankfully not a write-off and the it got fixed up reasonably straight. . . Looking at the condition of the car after the crash, being daily driven had taken its toll and it really needed some serious body work soon. Initially i was going to fix it bit by bit and try to keep it on the road, so the rear hatch and roof area had the worst rust and this was cut out a repaired.

  5. Hi All This is my LC Torana / Hb viva hybrid, it was my first car at the age of 15 and I rolled, bowled and arseholed it until I blew up the 1256 viva engine it had to pieces. Since then I Have taken it everywhere with me except for a few years stored in a tractor shed with the rats and birds! I've had it for 17 years now and after buying a bloody house I sold all my toys except the Torana, so now its time to get stuck in! I've been trolling the site for years, but never posted so be gentle with me!!! Any help, tips or abuse is always welcome!! The plan is....... -Fix rust in windscreens from dodgy 80s patch repairs -Fix floors because of leaking windscreens -buy new door skins from oz -buy chassis strengthening kit from oz -Find a shitload of bits missing from th 30 odd times I've shifted it -Find a viva 1800 magnum from somewhere for front suspension/ brakes -Chop narrow and mod the VR rear end to fit -Chop the shit out of the firewall/ tunnel -Fit a VR commy 3.8 V6 and 5speed and diff I just bought (holden/Vauxhall 4cylinders are shit and of the rocking horse type) -Do some skids I'm halfway through chopping the loom out of the VR as I write this taking a break from the coloured spaghetti!! Here's some pictures I found when I moved her back to Timaz way for a year, cheers for looking. Steve

  7. after many many years in storage while i built my crown and stuffed about with the V8 ive finally done some work on this thing. whats been done? new flywheel, 10" clutch and hydraulic throw out bearing. convert from steering box to power rack and pinion. Link G4+ ECU install. engine bay de-loom. so as usual i dont have many pictures because i just dont think of it at the time but i do have a few. so the power steering. its AE86 and i use AE86 power rack, crossmember LCA's and radius arms. to mount the crossmember you need to cut the ends off it and re-drill the mounting holes. you can also make spacers and drop it down by 40mm. some people dont do this and mount the AE86 crossmember straight to the bottom of the celica chassis rail. you can do this but it raises the steering and engine up quite a bit. the steering is no issue but raising the motor by around 40mm is more than im comfortable with. to re-drill the AE crossmember is quite a tricky process. what i did is to clamp the celica crossmember upside down on top of the AE crossmember. then i clamped straight edges to the mounting points for the LCA's on both crossmembers and aligned them. once you have them aligned you have effectively made sure the LCA mounting points are exactly the same on both crossmembers. then transfer the holes through from the celica crossmember to the AE. side note, when you space the AE crossmember down you need to put crush tubes for the bolts to go through into the spacer. its very hard to get the holes aligned exactly so what i do is drill the hole at 8mm. then i clamp the AE crossmember into the car using 6mm all thread. measure it and adjust it so its aligned with the car, then one by one i remove the 6mm rod and match drill down through the celica chassis rail into the crush tube with a 13 (i think its 13mm) drill bit. this makes sure the holes line up perfectly. some other points to note, AE86 crossmember and rack is 20mm a side wider than celica but the LCA has a kick in the end and the ball joint is angled which pulls the wheel back in. if you use all the AE86 parts the total increase in track is 7mm per side which equates to just under 1 degree of neg camber BUT, the bottom of the LCA will be closer to the disk by approx 6-8mm so check you have room. there are plenty of ways around this, like using stock celica LCS's and dealing with the track increase in other ways, or using offset RCA's (once again increasing your track) so its not the biggest issue in the world. the steering column needs to be modified so it has a bearing in the bottom end to support the shaft. there are lots of ways of doing this but i welded the tube from a AT141 corona (i think) to the bottom of the celica steering column outer tube. the steering shafts in the early toyota (and lots of other things, PG hydraulics sell the steering shaft bar stock) all have the same plastic rivet with flats style sliding joint so its pretty easy to use the parts to get the right length with the universal joint on the end. here are the few pictures ive taken, this is the crossmember all finished ready to bolt in. you can see the spacers ive used to move it down. it also has the engine mounts on it and ive seam weleded the whole thing. Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr this is the steering shaft with the new end showing the unis. Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr and this gives you an idea of clearance Untitled by sheepers-ra28, on Flickr so the rest. the flywheel and clutch all came from Brendan at night parts and you can get all those parts on trademe. the throw out bearing it a Tilton 6000 series one coupled with a Willwood 7/8 universal brake master cylinder. the Willwood part is really short and fits nicely to the firewall with a little opening out of the hole. as for the link thats ongoing but its not a difficult thing to get working if you follow the instruction. so yea, soon it will be supremely more drivable and i intend to daily it again for a while and park up the V8 whilst it gets some love and forced induction.

  9. It all essentially boils down to the fact that FCs rule. Get this going stat Mitch. Mitch knows the cage is shit. Doesn't intend it to hoon the car in anything official. Basically Mitch just wants to look the part, do some skids and do it all for less than the cost of a weekend for two in hamilton. This will be you in a few months. Good lad. Which, because its an FC will lead to:

  13. Ok so thanks to some peer pressure, and some bribery from our very own Bigfoot I ceased umming and ahhhhing about buying the Galant sell that had been calling my name from Zebra. She is a 1972(woohoo vintage reg) Mitsubishi Galant 16L... or Dodge Colt in the US... or Dodge Cricket in Canada (not to be confused with the US Dodge Cricket... which is actually an avenger lol... fucking "muricans! Shell is in very good nick with minimal bog or rust immediately obvious and the majority of the important bits there or there abouts including all the glass, dash, interior trim bits etc so the complicated to replace stuff seems to be there which is handy. Need to track down Engine/Box... i'm gonna go with the easy option of 4g63 non turbs which I know goes awesome in this weight body (had same in my second LB Lancer and it was a hoot) Steering column could be a little trick but need one of those too. Bigfoot has some spares that he has said i can make use of so struts/springs/dif etc so I can get her rolling which is fucking ace! need to figure out wheels and paint at some point soonish. But my mum had an awesome orange one on THE BEST WHEELS IN THE WORLD steve... aka turbos lol... and my grandmother had a rad silver one. Leaning toward a real rich burnt orange at this stage but it is early days... don't even pick it up till saturday haha. Anyway, pics As it sits right now: And how they are supposed to look haha: Sleek! Dodge! Low! factory spec! Edit: further good news is that reg is on hold and shit so once I slap it back together I can just get wof and roll, jeah! 15. Cheers man! I was impressed with it myself haha especially for rattle cans... I've tried this with more intricate jobs in the past and it's done more harm than good, reason I went for grease is that there's no risk to the underlying alloy

  16. Haven't really done much on this recently. I managed to purchase a rebuilt engine for it from Horse25, so have been tidying that up a bit and painting it before I get ready to plonk it in. Will probably tidy up and paint the engine bay at the same time as well as getting a new exhaust made up for it. Not entirely sure what my plan is for intake yet, got a Weber 32/36 and manifold off i500gt which I have (probably badly) rebuilt and will use to get things running at least. Still contemplating if I want to go down the bike carbs or sidedraught route in the future. If anyone has any opinions or suggestions feel free to let me know in the discussion.

  21. Progress has been made! And not just buying stuff, although there has been a little of that… BMAC has kindly welding up the intake plenum and fixed the engine mount. Now I just need to try and remember how it all goes back together after so long. Committed to GumBoot round 2 so better hurry up! A little bamboozled by some plumbing. See //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/44851-rwd-4age-water-works-advice-please/ Made up The List, it came to a page long and promptly got to work buying stuff that was not even on the list. I just could not resist these wheels and super bargain. They should do three things I hope. Actually be round unlike the silver ones from my Felicity my Green Mk1, fit over front brakes hopefully, look super awesome. Now you see bling bling modernity Now you don’t

  23. Went in for warrant today, not the best result but nothing too major! *Horn to work (took connections off and sprayed crc on them works now! ) *Adjust steering box play (the fella said he wasn't too concerned about how much I adjust out as long as it's better than it was) *A few holes in the exhaust need filling up (anyone got a mig I could use?) *Worn right rear brake hose (will buy a new one) *Brake ballance uneven (mentioned I should just bleed the brakes and replace with new fluid) So not too big a list to cross off before next weekend!

  27. So a quick update. (turning into a gardening thread....) Spent more time clearing out that last big bit of gorse. Its now a lovely big area that we might just have to put a picnic bench and small shelter on. Then could rent it out to cycle tourists etc in summer I went into the bush and cleared back all the manky scrub that was hiding the ferns. Its a sweet job as the difference is amazing. We also cleared more gorse and sycamore/hawthorn trees from along the roadside of the drive. This weekend we will continue along there and clear out as much as possible. Its looking heaps better without the sycamores as they are tall skinny ugly leafless trees. Really glad to get the hawthorns gone from near the gate as so bloody prickly and nasty.

  28. Wasn't happy with the end result with the plumbing, so ended up making a bulkhead to make it tidier and easier to pull the engine out. All oil and fuel lines, and the electrical bulkhead plug run through it. The only potential issue could be if I need to put a scatter shield round the bell housing (thought of this 5 minutes ago). Also been looking at the way all the oil lines are running at the pump and filter, and it looks like I have the wrong remote filter mount, the ins and outs need to be on the opposite side to where they are. And nearly have all the brake and clutch lines sorted barring a few fittings and a metre of brake line. I'm picking it'll be an absolute arse to bleed. For the record -4 Teflon line is an absolute c@*t to make up. Still need to work out go pedal cable attachment etc...

  30. Oh Yea, Nats, Went down a week before nats to do a "Tour of Love" with Manu, Laura, KK and Sherie. Went all over the south island. Such an awesome trip with such awesome people! Only had 2 issues with the Z. One was when a plug lead fell off heading out of blenheim. I though it had munched a stone as it doesn't have any filters. The other was the well into the 4 digit fuel bill. Did about 2400 or something ear plug wearing, exhaust fume sniffing, pothole swerving ks by the time it rolled back into the garage. Was very glad to park it up. Was a thoroughly enjoyable ordeal. A few pics stolen from nats thread too: I do like this car alot.
