  1. Oj so motor is all self supported in the car. Tans x-member is just some RHS tacked between the chassis rails, I will make something nice when the body is off the frame and I can get some more steel! Just about to pull the steering rack apart and cut it down, then see how much clearance it has with the sump. May have to notch it a little, or probably just get a stock sbc sump instead of this yuck deep one Anyway happy new year OS!

  2. So, I bought this to keep my sedan company : Seems like early falcon utes are all the rage now. Actually been looking for ages as some of you might know. It ended up being the least rusty one I could find in my search over the last 10 months. Its actually really straight, the tray is in really great shape, no dents and still has the original wooden boards as well. It Has bit of a ratty look but I have toned it down a little since buying it. The metal gold flake is quite in your face but its kind of cool. I think I might paint the B pillar sides the same cream body colour though but keep the roof as it is. Im not sure about the pin striping or the gold seats but its one of those things the more you look at the more used to it you become. Gives it a bit of character I suppose! It has a XW 221 pre cross flow engine, BW35 auto with T bar floor shifter, headers, twin exhaust, XF radiator with twin electric fans, stock drum brakes and stock diff, Mercury Comet metal chrome dash surround, plus its lowered of course! I have swapped my steering wheel over, makes it a bit more roomy in the cabin as I am quite tall and these things are not renowned for there interior space! It drives pretty good, better than I thought it would ha-ha. I need to do a few more little things but for now its a good useable ute to have some fun in, plus it was already registered here in Victoria. That was actually the selling point as made it easy to get in my name, so pretty happy with that

  3. So, I ended up Painting the sides of the roof and I also painted a spare correct model visor I had laying about. Looks heaps better now I reckon. Cheers to camel for popping around helping me fit up the visor, bit of a two man job as you have to stretch that sucker on. Been driving it heaps, nearly sorted all the bugs out of it. Needs a carb kit next, not looking too flash. Also need to put taller gears in it, its no good for cruising at 100. Luckily I still have the 3.5:1 diff from my XP sedan project, so will swap the gears over at some stage.

  4. Build thread //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/41664-rivalrx-1972-mazda-618-coupe/ Right. I bought this last year or so from Idaho USA and now it is sitting in a barn in NZ...stoked. I need to have it complied therefore the following I'm having done at the same time as the rust needs fixing Rx2 rear beaver out on Both rear quarter rust patches sorted Area below the front and rear windscreen repaired for rust Steering column moved to the right hand side (yes LHD to RHD conversion) Steering box and idler arm switched Once complied it can be certed for 13b and all the other bits before being road worthy. It's spent its life in Idaho which is one of the top 3 driest states in the USA making it a perfect project. I bought it based on a few pics from craigslist so I'm stoked to land it in nz and find it's pretty solid. These were only produced in USA for 1 year making this one rare Mazda...Wikipedia says... 616/618 (USA)[edit] The 616 was a major component of Mazda's United States expansion in 1971, having been preceded by its rotary brother, the RX-2, the previous year. It featured the 1.6 L (1,586 cc) engine, which was later used in the 808. The American Capella was updated and renamed the next year. The 1972 618 had a larger 1.8 L (1,796 cc) engine. Lasting just one year, the 618 nameplate was not used again in the United States and the only Capella for 1973 was the RX-2.

  8. Oh I sooooooo want a Chevette wagon. Much easier to attain than an HB Viva wagon. Yours looks great- I am glad it has the proper better looking recessed lights- nz kept them a lot longer than the uk before we went to the ugly 'afterthought' poppy outty lights.

  9. Pic of the ute tray, finally got around to it! Bonus! I got the fuel gauge going today, put a new 6 volt regulator, as the old one was stuffed. Still no go, so also had to replace the gauge as it had burnt out. Its good knowing how much petrol is left, that is for sure! Also gave it a oil change ready for the cruise to Phillip island Kustom Nat's. Should be a big turn out, its a 3 day event but I am just going for the sat. Will have to cruise at a leisurely 80-90 as my diff gears are really short at 4.0:1 However I just won a 2.83:1 ring and pinion to fix that though just need to install it one weekend. Then I can get back into the XP sedan again. I have been neglecting it a little bit as of late getting this one sorted!

  10. most of the parts arrived on Xmas eve only a few to come for the moment. Also over the weekend with loads of help form Billy we managed to get this done Opted to go without shortening the gear box. Have a Quaife short shifter on the way. Still some work to do but now the hard part is done just waiting on the engine to come back now. With the bike carbs sold now I need to work on how I'm going to fuel it once it has been run in.The plan is ITB's but time is not on my side before the nats for this

  11. An easy way is to use a wiper control box. They were commonplace in the days where cars only had one or two fixed speed (not intermittent) wipers. Once installed, you can dial in the amount of time delay between wipes. Some of the fancier ones could speed up/slow down each wipe. I have a few but am hoarding them for my own cars... Like this:

  15. Progress update on the ke25 Managed to find some new wheels that I liked. SSR XR4 Longchamps 2 x 14x7.0 + 1 2 x14x6.5 + 1 the current stud pattern was 4x110, so my mission was to convert the stud pattern to 4x114.3 to accommodate these new rims. I got Ke30 rear axles and drums and ke30 front hubs This is a realitively straight forward exercise with info availbile on the net but people do it different ways. My Diff is a U-Code. I should've searched for U-Code starlet rear axles and drums as these do not change the track width. The Ke30 ones add 10mm each side. Need to trim 5mm off each splined end of the Ke30 axles so they don't butt out. I did this with a beefy drop saw. once that is done I bolted them up using my original brake backing plates and brake assembly. The Ke30 drums are the same diameter as the KE25 ones but are a bit wider allowing that extra 10mm to be taken up. the front is a bit easier. KP starlet hubs would be the best option as they use all the same bearings and seal as the Ke25. With the ke30 Hub you need to use the ke2# bearings and also get a custom seal as neither the Ke20 or ke30 will work. I will post the seal size I used when I can remember. but other than that you can use all original brakes up front off the ke25. I got a non directional Maxxis tyre for the wheels 165/60R14 which achieves a nice stretch look without being too over the top. also allows for it to sneak up under the rear guards with that extra 10mm track width - JUST. I think it looks good, give me ya thoughts. thanks matt.
