Discussion Thread - KK-Kolonels 1983 Holden Commodore VH Wagon

So the new project arrived today - shameful and horrid I know but I hope to make a purse from a sows ear - or maybe a fleshlight from a sows vagina is more apt..

Image

oh BTW - its a 82 VH Commodore - rough as guts but surprisingly little rust

already had the WOF check and it has failed on

1 The windscreen.
2 The fuel pump's leaking.
3 Wiper blades
4 Headlight aim.
5 Exhaust leaks
6 The grille's insecure. He's also taken exception to the oh-so-classy temporary bonnet release sticking out of the grille.
7 Handbrake.
8 Left rack end.
9 Rust in the right lower sill at the rear.
10 No brake fluid in it.
11 All the brake hoses need replacing.
12 The driver's seatbelt has a cut in it.

He hasn't finished the WOF either because of all the spares in the back

DARGH - 7 days to go till Hawkes Boes and I still have to get it LOW and reliable too....

Got into it hot n heavy on Friday night / Saturday and got the majority done..

Pics - car still looks a bit poo and the small 13" wheels make it look higher than it actually is - but once it is cleaned and has some big steels on it, it will be much better..

So after a few days of smashing knuckles, drinking copious amounts of beverages. spending even more copious amounts of spoondoolies, I have at least made it to a near legal state.. it is in tomorrow for WOF recheck, wheel alignment and balance new wheels/tyres. Will advise how I go with recheck.

Image

Left to do tommorow night... (AFAIK)

Clean paint, remove all buildup of grime in crevices
Vacuum carpet and clean up
Fit CB radio
More low...

Have found myself a tidy replacement bonnet to get rid of ugly dent in front of mine - Uterus is bringing to Napier - will fit in carpark at backpackers and use old bonnet as a paddock surfboard.. Also to talked to painless dent removal - they should be rolling by tomorrow night to suck out the ding in the RF door..

Still needs epic paint tidyup but f--k it, Ive owned the pig for a whole 5 days so far and spent all of it getting it legal.. paint aint necessary for a WOF

Only other worrying issue is the motor is a bit lemony I think - but will just do as Mr XXX does and roll it with ease till I get a replacement motor.. Anyone got a cheap 202 and 5 spd for quick and easy conversion??

On a good note - the heater works - first old school car I have ever owned that actually has a working heater AND fan.. Yeehaaaa

Now back to work and figuring out how to lower it more without cutting springs...

Peace!!

All done for roadtrip now - just have to clean it, pack it and drive it, then when I come back, back into some more long term plans..

Had an interesting night. Picked up the car from WOF recheck/Wheel alignment. Drove comparatively nicely - though its was still a gutless POS which ran on 3 cylinders at idle.

Made a bracket for the CB antenna and ran the antenna cable to the CB - as I was doing this I snapped a plastic vacuum T-piece off the inlet manifold - just about ruined my night - freaked out for 2.5 minutes and thought hard how I am going to fix it.

The plastic was broken off flush with the manifold and it had a gaping 8mm hole down the centre. tried a couple ideas and then went looking for a bolt I knew I had - found the tapered thread bolts from my spare Austin doors - slathered it in a magical sealant I have and proceeded to use bolt to cut its own thread into the plastic.

Leak fixed and WOAH all of a sudden it now runs on 4 cylinders at idle - fuckin T piece must have been semi broken in the first place. So stoked!!

Felt so good I decided to fix the noisy PCV valve - so I stole a PCV valve from JB's HQ and fitted that which quietened up the engine a whole lot.

Finished installing the CB and went for a drive.. Engine magically picked up another 40% power and was much more pleasant - I even think the front suspension has sagged a little bit in appreciation...

Now I only have to clean and pack it - then I'm off to Napier... See you GC's there!!

FUCK YEAH!!!!

So my week of work is finished - pretty stoked with the result of my labours..

Never tackled panel work with more than a limp wrist before so half this week was a steep learning curve with advice from many helpful learned chaps.. (cutting off and stitching on a front end was kinda daunting TBH)

Image

Its ready now for me to deliver the panels to my buddy to give a blow over next week (and then drop off the car one night for the front apron and surrounding structure repainted) I've bought a litre of factory colour matted down so it should match the rest of the car (better than the olive drab would have) while I gather resources for a full repaint in olive drab..

In the meantime I'm off for a reckless day/night of fun to reward my week of hard work.. (after I finish my washing and pick out the bogies loaded with sanding dust...)
