Lord Gruntfuttock's 1971 XY Fairmont Big Grunty Discussion

From what I've read on the WWW, the eddy heads are bolt on and go at your own peril.

Ah, the old 'they say on th' web'... :-D

I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find problems with any brand, generally anything inherently wrong is ironed out once something has been in circulation a few years...

But yeah, Edelbrock pretty much markets for the Chebby crowd, and any Furd products are almost an afterthought so they weren't my first choice. But after looking at what was out there, reading umpteen real world reviews and checking several import options, ultimately these were:

  1. local,
  2. a decent price, and
  3. fit my system pretty well

So I bought 'em (and yes, they will be checked out prior to install)...

If it was performance I was after I'd probably go for the Twisted Wedge 170s, but that was more than I need, and the Performer RPMs match my setup. The cheaper E-streets actually performed well on the dyno in many tests, but are built to a budget to compete with the knock-off brands, so I spent a little more for better quality components. These are the 1.90" valve options, the 2.02" would have required more work than I want to do. Rockers is the same dilemma, no point going top-end on a street car, so trying to find a decent mid-range set that will do the job, reliably, for a long time...

I'm trying to find the grind specs on the cam that is in it, it is mildly lumpy, and seems to go ok so I will probably leave it in, just gotta remember it is a 351 cam so has a different firing order...

You know what it's like when you start looking at speed shop catalogues and you get a chubby for the bits available - I have to keep reminding myself this isn't a track car, she's a weekend cruiser with a bit of kick. I just wanna take my fambly on cruises and be able to do skids... :)

Do you remember who you brought it from? Has it always been a Southland car? Looks like an old family friends who had one 25 years ago that colour down there.

The owner 25 years ago?

That'd be a skinnier version of me, a gangly youth held together with hormones and acne cream, spending my apprentice wages almost entirely on beer, trying to get laid, and pornography.

My how I've matured...  :-D

you have a very tidy xy fairmont there mate,  have a few of these models myself. really enjoying seeing  your progress, so the plan is to have that c4 rebuilt?? and fit the new heads, looks like you already have a good intake manifold/ dizzy etc.  i have not had much to do with the winsors, i run clevelands in most of my falcons. be good to see it all back in there and even better to see a video of it running and driving??

Trans should be all good, had it serviced a few years ago, and fluid was nice and clean, so will just replace filters, seals, clean up and refit.

yeah I like the old Windsor, much smaller than those great lumps of clevos...  :)

so why did you pull the engine?

  1. It was overheating randomly, think there is a bit of crap somewhere in there or a gasket issue
  2. has never been set up to run on unleaded
  3. opportunity to add some go-faster bits
  4. chance to tidy up/clean the 45 yr old engine bay
  5. to justify buying an engine hoist that was on special

:)

  • 2 weeks later...

I chased an overheating problem in my 351 for ages, just randomly started doing it one day in the central melbourne gridlock and then from then on any time I sat at the lights the temp would start to move.. apparently with some clevo's 30 thou over starts to cause some symptoms, you also have to have the right stat that shuts the bypass ring as it opens (and have the brass ring installed), I went with a stant high flow one from the states. I also forked out 900AU for a 4 core GT radiator from fomoco which didn't seem to make much difference haha, the other thing to do is the impellor mod on the water pump which just involves riveting a disc to the impellor to reduce cavitation, seems to be a higher rpm mod but it seemed to work.. I was also using as s/s flex fan and while people pooh pooh them it pulled a shit ton of air at low rpms so I deemed it ok, when I finaaly get the old bitch back on the road I'm gonna look at modifying a 1HDT cruiser viscous hub and 10 blade fan to fit..

Hopefully digging all the loose crap out of the block and fresh gaskets will cure the old girl of her hot flushes...

I'll check the water pump and have the radiator flushed because of the loose crap in there, but these were replaced/checked a couple of years ago so should be fine. Rad is the 3 core job and in great nick.

CHI heads look great, I just didn't know enough about them.

Indeed it does.

"Thumpr Camshafts are the hottest cams to hit the streets in more than a decade. Thats because they give you the big cam sound your looking for, with out the drawbacks. Applying a camshaft design originally created for sports car endurance racing, they incorporate early exhaust valve opening, long exhaust duration, and a generous amount of intake and exhaust overlap. Best of all, Thumprs will not negatively impact power output or streetability."

Will check them out.

Cheers...
