XSVWGN
DISCUSSION THREAD Hey everyone, I recently joined oldschool but have been trolling here and there for the last few years. As my turbo ae100 corolla wagon was nearing completion I spyed a bright yellow 1980 corona on Hustle Live and I had to have it. I parted with some stereo equipment and $400 and I went over to Wainui to pick it up. As soon as I got it home I started stripping it down to see what I was going to be working with. Eye moved the driveshaft as it was banging around and I took the fixed backs out that were pretty much welded to the floor Fuel lines running through the middle of the car.... Car was built for skid and originally had a RB20det in it Front had been hacked up to fit a huge radiator and to clear room for the intercooler piping. The passenger footwell had also been smashed up with a hammer to make room for the wastegate to clear... Turned out they welded the bumper to the car rather then put four bolts in.. Battery tray behind passenger seat Removed rear windows and found rust so that was repaired Crack in bog around fuel filler... As I removed it I realiser the fuel filler and surrounding area was rusty so that was cut out Started pulling it all back Started to regret pulling it all back as I found previous repairs and more and more rust All the way under the dash it was like this. Has rusted through the rain gutter.... Now what do I do!!!
XSVWGN
Found a guy on trademe with a sedan shell in his lawn. He cut the front end off and sent it up to me. Cost me $150 so I definitely can't complain. Completely rust free too. Well, surface rust but that's nothing. Was thinking about sticking this front on as it hasn't been molestered at all! Previous owner also took a hit in the front right hand side and this is how he tried to counter things... Scored a complete interior for $40 from a guy in Paeroa that wrecked a wagon he found in the bush.
XSVWGN
As I was looking on trademe another wagon popped up but it's a 79 (same shape) and it looked to be in much better condition then my yellow one so money was traded hands and freight organised and I got it transported from Christchurch to Wellington. It has no engine but it was complete otherwise and it came on some 13x7hotwires with decent tyres too I had now sold my turbo corolla so I went a bit mental buying parts... 2jzge - 82k, loom, auto gearbox, ecu -$700 Shortened hilux rear end set up for 4link Pulled these out of CHCH two weeks ago and got tyres on them yesterday too...14x7 Volk Racing Wheels
XSVWGN
Brought some Tanabe Subaru coilovers off trademe for $100 and started stripping them down to make my own coilovers. Remove the sleeves, springs, hats and camber plates and I will use them all on my setup. Camber plates are getting re drilled to suit my setup at the moment. I will drop the car a further 20mm by using the camber plates too as the standard top hats are really deep. Now following seedy Als post on coilovers I stripped my standard ones and cut around the bottom spring keeper I them brought some brand new Monroe ae92 corolla inserts that were 55mm shorter then original so the standard strut housing will be cut down to keep the new inserts captive Tidied up the struts by grinding off the rest of the bottom spring keeper Also brought some series 5 RX7 4pot callipers yesterday so they are on their way too so I will be looking into setting those up at some stage.
XSVWGN
I'm really keen to run power steering in this rather then the steering box so if anyone has suggestions then thrown them my way. I have been told to look in an 86 powersteering rack and column and go from there. Sound right?
XSVWGN
Over the weekend I got some work done on the corona. I picked up my struts and put my coilovers together. Huge drop in height from standard that's for sure and I have set them 7 threads up just to see how everything will sit. I put them in the car and realised the camber plates will need to be re drilled.... Take into account there is no engine or gearbox etc and it is sitting at this height. I then put her in the garage and next on the list will be to drop the rear end and see how my shortened hilux setup will fit. I am also contemplating building some rear strut towers to run a coilover suspension setup on the rear rather then the normal shock setup. Just an idea at this stage. XSVWGN
Well i havent updated this build thread in over a year and not much has changed really. Well i sold my wheels, sold the 2jz, sold my coilovers and sold the corona rear end too. The rear end now sits on a s13 subframe (not mounted yet) with plans to run s13 hubs, knuckles and adjustables up front. I have wanted to get another 2jz for a while now so i can start playing around with mounting things and then this turned up on trademe for $700!!! Deregisterd but all i wanted was the engine. Managed to pull the engine out last Saturday and on Sunday a guy from palmy turned up and took the rolling body away for $550 so i was really happy. Playing around trying to put the 2jz into the corona So i picked up a 1ggte radiator for $200 recently and have that a go. As you can see there is NO room to run fans here and on closer inspection i may end up recessing the firewall to get some better clearance up front. The other thing is that the sump sits on the sway bay so i will re think things and may run a custom swaybar setup Thats all for now. XSVWGN
Had a chance to get into the garage again today. I got more carried away with tidying the garage then i did working on the car but i still got some stuff done. I wanted to drop the sway bar to see what kind of room i would have with the engine as the sump sits on the sway bar currently and then i realised that the caster arms and sway bar are all mounted up to the same thing so i ended up removing it all. Sump sitting on the sway bar in this pic Removed all of this. Will have to make some custom mounts for the caster arms Front end is pretty empty I put the radiator in to have a look at clearance and have market out what sections i need to remove. The whole bottom radiator support panel is going to need to be replaced as it is full of rust so i will end up having quite a bit of room. XSVWGN
Evening Everyone, Today i got up to all sorts and the pics will reflect that. I also dropped my AE86 Powersteering crossmember to Spire Fabrication in Kapiti last week to do the mod that Sheepers has done. 40mm box tubing at either end and had it cut down on the ends to fit my chassis rails. I pick that up next week so im looking forward to getting that back and bolted into the chassis. The box tubing is to help drop the JZ down a bit as it is a really tall engine and it also helps sort the suspension geometry as well. Love this bottom radiator support. The more i look the worse it is. Massive steel plate on the front and underneath there is another steel plate and heaps of bog! Brought some s14 adjustables and they pretty much bolted straight in. I will be using a full nissan front hub assembly, s14 lower control arms and rxt 4 pots so its a bit of a mongrel Also took some measurements as the 2JZ fits in the engine bay JUST and i cant run radiator fans so i am recessing the firewall to give me some more room to play with Then i pushed it outside so that i could air out the garage from all the grinding smoke etc. Man its a pig thats for sure!!! XSVWGN
So i got carried away and brought some things from driftmotion.com. A bit of a rookie error on my part as i got stung $150 ish in freight from the states and then i got hit with $140 in duty when it came into the country so this radiator shroud and a few other little bits i brought now have turned into expensive parts but hey its all a learning opportunity. I am VERY happy with the quality on the shroud and fans to say the least though MISHIMOTO!!! Matt
Popular Post XSVWGN
Wow i havent done anything on this car in so long. In the last 18months i have had reconstructive hip surgery, reconstructive ankle surgery and next Friday im having reconstructive shoulder surgery. Im 31 and falling apart! Anyway back to the car... so i sold my 2jz and the adjustables etc as my surgeries have been through the public system as ACC are a pain in the ass so ive had to sell parts to pay bills etc during my recovery. I have managed to get yet another 2jz and the plan was originally to go 2jzge+t but now i am staying NA and have a manifold being built at the moment to run individual blacktop 4age throttle bodies. Manifold is being built by Simon at Max Fabrication. He does awesome work!!! My wagon is currently at Spire Fabrication in Paraparaumu upside down on a Rotisserie. The S13 Silvia subframe is being mounted as we liaise with Andy Smith of Smith Autos in Levin who will be doing the cert
XSVWGN
Well when i got my 2jz it didnt have a water pump pulley and i had wanted to get the silver ones through driftmotion but the freight was going to be about $88 on their own so i got these ones from Aliexpress And here is an update of the S13 rear subframe conversion. Chassis rails got the cut to be able to build the strut towers Front mounts made and tacked in Welded in and chassis rail notched Rear Mounts folded up and in place Discuss here
Popular Post XSVWGN
Went down and checked out the progress last week and was happy with how everything is going. Have spoken to Andy Smith the cert guy and he is happy with the current progress. Car will head up to Levin in the coming weeks to get his approval. Top of the strut towers were to be made out of 5mm steel and the rest was made of 3mm thick steel as per the request of the Certifier. a tad over kill possibly but better to be safe. The adjustables come really close to top suspension arm but i will replace them with aftermarket adjustable arms Back of the strut towers were made flat and clear the rear seat which is good
XSVWGN
Wagon is on its way home today. Really happy to have it all done and dusted and then it will head off to the Cert guy in a few weeks. Towers are a bit bigger then i had expected given the suspension isnt too big
XSVWGN
Haven't updated this for a while. Car is on the rotisserie at home in the garage and nothing new has really happened. I did receive my individual throttle manifold from @evil_si (Simon at Max Fabrication) and to say I'm happy is an understatement. Looks awesome on the engine! Need to get it in the engine bay to see how much room I have for trumpets. This manifold uses the standard 2jzge intake runners. They have been cut down and a 10mm plate was CNC'd. All throttles needed no modifying at all. Quite effective and didn't cost me the moon.
