Steelies
Got the final components for hydraulic gear, fluid, some advice and all the hoses this week, stoked. wallet not so stoked. rear is just about complete. just need to do tank bracing and complete welding on panhard and rear is ready for assembly and testing. exhaust, battery tray done still looking very touch and go, ie perfect for a trip to wagnats. Popular Post Steelies
long time no post! well, the 'dros are on the way out, try and get me one of them wof things, the last one being in 2010. here it is on the way to a quick wag camp we had recently. will miss this 'ride'height, IMO it's about the only thing that makes an XM look less goofy!

Popular Post Steelies
yep so she's back on the road, little bit of an update eh. - a bunch of rust needed doing, plenty more to go. sills etc. - front short shocks, Ultima, from online auto parts aussie site - had some standard KYBs floating around for the rear. glad i didnt cut the original shock mounts out during the hydro process! - whiteline swaybar and bushes, as above - new spring packs care of Archers springs, Rotorua. - thermostat, first time in years - fan shroud, first time ever - went back to the muzzy rims with some maxxis 175/70 14 biccies - new rear brake lines - super-drone side exit exhaust managed to stay, yeah! it drags round left handers under the right circumstances - stoked. - cleaned all the paint off the front end trim. fuck it drives so sweet now (for what it is), best it ever has. still a bunch of niggles but pretty happy with it. the new springs are great but came down a whole bunch during the trip to Wagnats. a little unusual for new ones. anyway, just got them back from HG Inghams blacksmiths in the Hutt. i dropped off the springs and my old main leaves on monday, by tuesday's end i had them back in the car with the old main leaf added to the pack, and all reset to suit. will get it out for a drive tonight but from standing on the towbar the car is noticeably stiffer, and only sits a half inch higher at the back, unloaded. loading up a bunch of shit and a Hemi2doz in the front and driving it for a week/nats should be a good test!

Popular Post Steelies
waggy went to the south island again, long time no wag there. it managed to run well, let us down at a crucial point, get fixed, run well, run shit, and all the usual falcony goodness. here it is at a particularly sweet spot we hired in golden bay. would trade again currently on the third 'yay it's fixed' since then, fingers crossed it will continue to behave. last couple years have just been juggling wheel/tyre/lowering block combos really. clearly zero preventative maintenance.
Popular Post Steelies
Wagon gets love! After discovering strawberry milkshake in the gearbox things had to happen. Friends appeared and engine floated away. In there was a motor I bought from a ford guy, he dragged it out and my dad and I put it straight in back in 2004ish. It's been shitty but reliable, but @sentra Dave sent me another mystery engine years ago.. So in she goes! Untested as per tradition. Sorry it took so long Dave. Legend has it donk is from his jet boat, ideal.
Popular Post Steelies
C4 box got a birthday, apparently it was full of corroded, broken and sloppy parts.

Popular Post Steelies
Things. New gearbox x-member. Since I've owned the car it's had some period Ford stamped member hung off a couple bits of angle and has suffered from being first point of contact for ground/car meetings.. with the box out it was finally time to flick that nasty shit with its ground-hooking flanges, gain a tiny bit of ground clearance, and a bunch of much needed room for the exhaust. Dave Jackson got a nosey under the covers, coolant parts, carb kit, gaskets, a fantastic voyage of breaking plastic vacuum trees off in the manifold right at the end, and ignition/other parts from the previous anchor. Adapting accelerator linkages and other stuff also in the mix. FYI falcon suckers, thermostat housings are NLA, repco get em in from Kilkenny castings in Aus.
Popular Post Steelies
A bit closer, turns out replacement flex plate was incorrect so current one is off to get fixed up. Boring falcon info to follow: flex plate appears to be a Windsor v8 part with counterweights drilled off to become 'neutral' balance to suit the 6cyl. Apparently it's a thing, as the 6s are more likely to have borg Warner transmissions that have different mounting holes and offset in the flex plate, but the fantastic Windsor engine got the c4 and shares the same offset, tooth count and crank mounting with the 250 I6.
Popular Post Steelies
Shit's in and runs! Vital Fluids for motor and box gobbled up and stayed inside, yay. Kiwi Engineering fixed the ring gear, Colliers (both in Levin) checked the balance, all G. Got choke bits from Weber Specialties and other stuff from around the place. Road test yet to happen, exhaust currently sitting on the ground etc. Wagnats coming up awfully fast.. Should have taken a before Pic, it was haggard in a few places
