I bought a VZ ute to use as a mule while we were doing a house reno about 5 years back. 6 speed manual, V6 Alloytec and 200,000km on the clock when I bought it. She was a thirsty beast around town. A bit better on the open road. In short order I had to replace the coil packs and the injectors and then at around 220,000km the ECU crapped out. Holden in their wisdom decided that mounting the ECU to the engine block was a really good idea. Multi layered circuit boards thrive on heat cycles apparently. $1.700 later she was back on the road, and I moved her on before anything else broke.

That is one of my favourite vz colours, its not a very common one! The vz v6 models seemed to be a bit of a lemon i had a vy with the last 3.8 and it was great and had zero issues with it.

Oh yeah, i didnt mention it but i tested the battery and alt and both had good voltages. It is a Japanese battery, so no idea how old it is, but it has no issue starting the car. I do wonder since I was creeping along in traffic if the revs, and voltage, dipped a bit low and caused the CANBUS to throw a wobbly.

The Alt has a normal solid pulley, so fancy clutched pulley here, so no idea if the ECU can control it.

You can also have pretty wild voltage fluctuations with the ecu regs when they are on the way out. My commodore was all over the show charging voltage wise when the reg was on its way out but didnt throw any codes just noticed because i have a factory voltage gauge. Blairs auto electrical have a massive stock of parts was 120$ and i replaced the reg and rectifier for good measure was relatively simple just need a grunty soldering iron for the rectifier to the windings.

  3. Have an 05 vz calais 5.7

has been a great car owned for 5-6 years , haven't had many issues with it ive had to rebuild the alternator, replace a aircon pipe and a few bushes ect here and there. Have daily driven it at one point doing 4-500k a week, now its making 410whp with alot $$ spent on engine and handling, brakes ect also.

mine was a low ish ks example and had been garaged most of its life and lived under a cover when i had it outside. Lots of fun can pile the family in and cruise easily enough room for people in the back ect.

For Tawa Wellington area, and Porirua

Kenepuru Car Service Centre is my go to, good honest guys, two sites, one by Moore Wilsons on Kenepuru is the original and the newer one which I go to now is by the Linden Train Station in Tawa.

The newer one is the place that was in good bye pork pie I think. Tried to verify with google images but couldn't find it... pretty sure it was though, maybe it was the remake?

Only bad thing is they are always super busy and packed.

Always a range of cars old stuff and new.

Yea I second this Russel is a gc and ive been going to him for years with all sorts of vehicles and he’s always been fantastic.

  5. Anyone know if there has been any rumours past being charged RUC and claiming back for phev come next year? Been looking at a used outlander but if full price RUC come in it will kill off the savings for me with the cost difference between a petrol and the phev over a 5 year period.

  6. Just a cert question on calliper adapters, these have been previously certed they are adapters for evo brembos to holden commie uprights and clubsport discs.

providing they are the correct thickness is the weld holding the two pieces to get the offset correct an issue? as I thought they had to be a single peice?

  7. Awesome story, I have my step dads last bike before he passed away a few years ago he got me into riding as a teen ( also much to my mums dislike) and although nothing special model wise nor my regular kinda bike it holds a special spot.

Do you have fancy respiratory stuff for this? Most of the fumes are less toxic than a petrol/diesel fire, except the hydroflouric gasses which are feckin nasty. Scarred lungs and cool stuff. That's the stuff that gives me the willies

Any car/house fire requires RPE and now there is more study into the effects of wildfire and that smoke also ,BA is standard practice all the plastics ect are highly toxic and carcinogenic. Also battery fires are toxic as so I dunno what you mean by less toxic than a petrol/ diesel fire theres sulphuric acid and heavy metals in there too. Basically think of it this way there is nothing in any car fire you want to breathe all of our gear afterwards is bagged and sent away for cleaning. Carcinogens are probably some of our largest long term health risks we have very high rates of cancer as an occupation, standard procedure for where i am is usually ether we will get ready in the cab and get to work from there or leapfrog where one person from a distance will start apply water from upwind/ out of the smoke while the other person starts up and they will take over and start the fire attack while the second person is getting started up then work as a pair. Yoeddy may be a bit different as he is a rural / natural enviroment brigade and they dont usually have breathing apparatus.

We got called out a few weeks ago to a eV on fire at a place in the riwaka hill (the one you go over before marahau)

Place was up a 1km long driveway through the bush. Lush spot. Glad it was tipping it down with rain because a plastic car spitting out flames from lithium batteries you really just can't stop easily  is not a thing I'd like to see in the dry heat of summer around here.

Sadly I never got to see the event because we got told to leave our truck at end of drive - there was enough trucks up there already. Damn it for being late to that party.

Was it the actual pack or just a car fire? Ive heard of a few where the car has gone up haven’t heard of one where the pack has actually gone here yet

Modern cars are built way safer with stability control, collision avoidance, airbags etc. No amount of wof checks are going to change that though.

Interesting how focused the media are on EV fires. Yeah they're harder to put out, but they catch fire way less than petrol cars. There are almost two hundred thousand vehicle fires on USA highways each year.

When an EV catches fire though, it's international news. When a ship carrying EVs catches fire, everyone wants to point the finger at the EVs without any real evidence.

I dunno i think its just fascination because they aren’t what we have always had I haven’t been to a ev fire but did my last shift see the effect of a lithium scooter battery go up in an apartment the person was lucky it was sprinklered and is probably going to be lucky to survive with the amount of burns sustained. Part of the fascination is the ferocity that they burn when they get going a fire thats producing everything it needs to burn is pretty impressive.

  11. The 5.7 really comes alive with an OTR intake and a tune, my vz made 242 kw at the rears with rear exhaust and no cats and otr intake was alot of fun. If you look up the intake manifold numbers and you dont have the ls6 one ( came factory on the vy onwards? ) they are also a good cheap upgrade

Cheapest Phev Outlander I've ever seen in my garage now. Awful, but solid appliance value. Also wins my spreadsheet as it was less than $10K!

Whats the battery life like on it now as theres a few now getting substantially cheaper

Fire extinguishers are of no use for batteries

Well yes and no depending on battery size if you can cool the pack with a co2 and prevent thermal runaway then it’s possible to stop the battery getting to the point of fire ect. Currently we only have lots of water to battle with , your average fire truck here Carries between 1400-2000l of water anyways thats not enough to put one out ether without a water supply….

  14. @Ned Sorry if this has been covered , Ive been looking at a 2017-18 ish Ioniq the electric model obviously is there anything to look out for? looking to spend around 25k and need that extra range the ioniq has over the leaf for the $$ i was looking at.

  15. Ill be honest I wish I had brought it first time round, the quality of flare as you have found is far better. As you have mentioned the only limitation is the one size and you need a bit of extra length with close bends i just flared then did the final bend.
