  3. May as well go non grease all the way through. Almost everything runs non greasy, and it's not like you're stressing them. Coz, Marina... Up to you. I've done 400,000km and 35 years on non greasy joints and only one is fucked.

  5. The need is that it makes the job a hell of a lot easier when you have the fluid behind the seals to create the pressure required to pump it through. Dry seals don't seal very well and it can take a bloody long time to get going. A fresh rebuild is different because you have presumably used fluid or rubber grease during assembly and is not comparible to a cylinder that has been sitting on a shelf for six years. There have been times I have regretted not bench bleeding a cylinder first. There have also been times they work near on straight away. I usually just dump some juice in the top and pump it till it jizzes all over the floor and that works good enough to bolt on.
  6. Oh back on this, EGR generally isn't harmful on petrol engines and you can play around with it to improve economy if you need an excuse to make more graphs. Minimising blowby and feeding it into a catch can will keep your pistons clean far better than ditching the EGR.
  7. Yes I believe I just said that. Also yes you can remove the valves from a lot of modern engines by hand. Far easier than mucking about with a spring compressor that usually never fits anywhere anyway
  8. It's interesting how a lot of modern engines have gone away from hydraulic lifters. Harder wearing surfaces, less thermal expansion and better oil technology means there's much less need for them.
  9. Modern cams don't bed. Look at the buckets, they are hardened and mirror smooth. They slip over the oils smooth as silk.
  10. Yep nyloc is legit. Ya can chuck some locktite on too if you really wanna but I never do.
  11. Another reason for gunky combustion chamber is low tension piston rings. If you've got it that far apart it's probably worth reringing it with better rings
  12. 600° is pretty safe. Ya can push 700 if you really wanna but for a big lump like that 600-650 is mint
  13. I really think you're worrying about the cooling system way too much. Keep it simple and it'll keep working. Great news on the increased boosts though!

    It's quite amazing how much some boost improves the economy. My shitty old 3L gained an easy 200km more range once turbo.

  18. If the oil is clean it can be pretty damn hard to see where it's coming from though. Especially with how difficult it can be to clean all the residual oil out of all the little recesses it accumulates in, you sometimes can't tell if you're still looking at old oil or freshly leaked oil. I've considered adding fluro to engine oil too but also dunno how it goes.

    I once found some complicated formula for figuring out compound turbo sizing, although I'd just slap on what you have and give it a jam. Should be sweet.
  20. The insurance company doesn't have to prove anything. It's totally at their discretion whether they'd pay out or not, and if the car is no longer in the state it was originally insured for, it's essentially breaching your contract. That goes for any modification really, regardless of legality. This isn't the insurance thread though so let's move on.

  22. My old boss was doing a cert on some vehicle a number of years back, and during the brake test one of the calipers departed company. He saved it, barely, but what's the go if the car did fly off the road and fuck up the certifier?

  24. Ok so here's what we do with drum brakes. We don't have a brake roller at work so on light stuff it's purely based on whether it pulls or locks a wheel when it shouldn't. On the heavy stuff that requires a CoF it has to go to VTNZ, which do have a roller. So we take the vehicle for a spin and get the brakes nice and warm. 9/10 times once they're hot, the imbalance is gone.
