  1. I've been floating around this site for a while, figured now's a good time to start a build thread since I picked up a new project. Its actually for the misses But I've fallin' for it too. We initially bought a Nash Metropolitan, we basically stored it for a few years doing a few minor things getting it running and driving but at the end of the day it was a can of worms I just wasn't motivated to get into. So we picked up a 63 Corvair Monza coupe off trade me and sold the Nash within an hour of each other... Perfect! The Corvair's a reasonably fresh import, its pretty tidy with a bit of rust on the front floors and thats it. It was running a bit rough but came with brand new carbs so chucked them on and gave it a tune. Found an exhaust valve tappet was a little tight, loosened that off and it started running perfectly. Any way here's some pics... Excuse the Trade Me interior pics. I don't have any good ones of my own yet haha Discuss here, Cheers!

  2. God Bless the Authorities. I was looking at a Fatman Fab IFS front end and emailed them. Here is the response.... Due to the excessive new testing requirements on welded and cast automobile parts by the Australian and New Zealand governments we have formally withdrawn from those markets and will not supply parts to those countries. They are now requiring aviation level fabrication techniques and non-destructive testing on all welded parts. Cast suspension parts regardless of quality or testing are no longer allowed on any basis, while forged parts are required to have documented individual testing done per each part. In addition, we are receiving requirements for detailed engineering analysis far in excess of normal practice and empirical testing as is currently done. These additional costs in addition to the additional shipping and Customs cost for you simply force us to this regrettable decision. We apologize for any inconvenience. Where are my cotton wool overalls. Im vewy vewy precious.

  3. Been crazy busy at work so not a great deal of progress being made, but been hitting the chrome and stainless with metal polish and jamming it back on the car bit by bit. Also got my grill back from Bumper Replacements in Auckland. Really nice job and had a fair bit of rust on it before so the difference is just massive.

  4. The idea is to give it some old school lowrider flare. Lowering and patterned roof to begin with. I'll just polish the lower part of the card so it will have faded/rubbed through paint. First though get it up to spec for vinning. I'm in search of some 4 spoke SS Cragar rims. Any leads will be appreciated. Pic for reference... Cheers, Kenny Discuss here, Cheers!

  6. I have been looking around for a while for a new work truck, wanted to go old school and update it to modern running gear and some creature comforts. I didnt have much of an idea but liked the look of older Chev trucks, did some reading and looking and got to this point. Truck will be in the country mid April, it is currently running a 327 and manual gearbox, and pretty much stock apart from that. Plan is to get it complied with existing running gear then modernise a wee bit. I have an LS3 and 6L80 trans and all associated wires and mechanical stuff in my warehouse now (cart before horse) and maybe a front end suspension transplant from a later truck and a diff with a lower ratio. this one will be either a 4.11 or 4.56 ish I believe, so a bit on the highside. While the intention wasn't to start/have another project, Im quite fizzed up about it. Going to keep it stock looking, no fancy wheels or any of that crap. Will get some hand painted signage on it, I want it to look like it was always there.

  7. Spent a few hours this weekend sorting out the suspension. When I bought the car it was pretty low and as it turned out the front springs weren't captive. They may well have been "V8 Falcon coils" as per the declaration paper but whatever they were they'd certainly been cut. I ordered a set of Cobra lows, P/N CFFL23 which are 40mm lower than standard. The lowering springs are about 10cm longer than the cut springs which makes the cut springs close to half the length of a factory spring. Took the struts to work and had the springs swapped pretty quickly. Struts went back in without too much drama and I removed the 2" blocks from the rear to even the ride height out. I trimmed the U bolts as they hung lower than I was comfortable with so they'll need to be replaced if I have to put the blocks back in to get a wof but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Haven't measured the front ride height yet but I suspect it's come down more than 40mm due to the extra weight of the engine. Pretty stoked with how it sits now, nice wee bit of rake and it rides a hell of a lot nicer now that it's not hitting the bump stops over every bump.

  9. With some help from good mates, the 13b bridgie is now sitting where it should sit. I had the oil pick up extended by SDP (Stephen Dean Performance) and then 3 Bonded the sump and baffle plate on. SDP will be coming to measure the mani angle this week and then will get into fabbing that as well as making risers for my quad throttle body intake. I’m happy - aiming for Chrome in August for a non-road legal hoon…….

  12. Woop woop. Been pretty busy with swapping motors in my wagon, nats and leeboes daddy shower. However finally been getting some time on this. Spent the last few evening's tidying up the wiring and refitting all the dash, kick panels etc. Pretty happy to have that done. So fit my new steering wheel. Pretty happy with it. But needed a more fancy horn button. Thankfully, I had bought a bunch of mooneyes stickers when I visited von makooooooo at magoos hot rods over nats weekend. Was perfect size. Much win. So driving this to work at some point over the long weekend to finish the exhaust. And that should be it really. Cert ready! (I hope) Anyway. Rock and roll.

  13. Got the tray and cab back on. Plenty of room for the exhaust to go out between the chassis rails and guards. The cab was sitting slightly on the driveshaft hoop, so cut a hole and made a patch. Then cut a big hole in the floor!

  15. for those interested in an already involved project here is my dads 1965 Pontiac Bonneville when it was raced in the 80s it has beefyer swaybar in the front and one put in the rear. the front suspension has been lowered and aligned for racing and good turn in. disk brakes are installed in the front to replace the drums. along with a dual circuit holden hq master cylinder. the motor is the original matching numbers 389 couples with a th400 trans also original and untouched driving a 2.56:1 diff also original. the car is now just giong to be used as a awesome powerful cruiser. with some racing heritage. He has had the car 40 yeas this year. the last 20 of those it has resided in the garage in hibernation. during the new year i set about installing the 389ci v8 back into the car and making it run and drive.....stopping was another issue.....later though as typically an old car does it has some rust so that will need dealing with before i go for a wof nothing to bad just a little in the radiator support panel/cross member , both c pillers around guttering, right rear door shut area and the left rear dogleg . all fixable though. this is how i went about fixing the radiator support panel... just take the whole lot out and put it on the bench....... much easier drive down the road to wals... no bonnet....no reg..... no wof...no worries for those interested i have some old racing photos of the car from the 80s. i will try take more photos of what i do on the car.

  19. Or option A http://www.jegs.com/i/Cragar/260/1422040402/10002/-1 $500 US plus some freight (or get them to put into @chris r's van that is coming from USA to NZ fairly soon) I know it says golf cart wheel but Cragar list those wheels as 965lb load rating - so unless a Corvair is heavier than 3900lbs with a driver, 3 hookers, a boot load of liquor and a full tank of gas then you're golden. http://www.cragarwheel.com/wheels/wheelsdetails/cragar-series-410c-ss-golf-wheel

  21. When reusing super dry old native that has been standing in a building for many decades it is often good practice to pilot drill the nail holes. If the nails don't bend when you try to hammer them in the wood will split so either way you're fucked if you don't.

  23. Clamping can fuck hoses. If you go too tight. Just enough to stop the pressure. Like having to stop mid stream while having a piss to write your name in the snow. Too much clamping will do damage.

  24. This is my life nowsanding sanding and more sanding.had to buy some more Autothane primer filler, 4lts used up already, all the small removable parts are primed, working on the doors, then the front fenders, going to take the shell off the spit this weekend so I can finish up the front and back ends, aiming to have it all done by the end of the month, BUT, my work is relocating at the end of the month and have just started paying us Monthly(broke ass) the Mrs is filling in for her charge nurse who has just resigned and is working full time for the next month and a half not to mention the boys Rugby is starting soon, we're going away in the school holidays and all the other normal day to day shit like mowing the lawns and other diy crap still needs to be done!Fuuuuuuk.YeaHaw!!!

  25. Been out of town at a wedding (best man duties) so no progress over the weekend. Tried a bit yesterday when I got back, my dust shield gaskets had arrived so put the steering knuckle together, then being hungover (and stupid) I installed a wheel bearing race the wrong way round in the rotor. Of course the taper meant there was no lip to tap it out, so - insert swear words here... New rotors on the way. Wouldn't mind so much but I had spent ages cleaning them up and painting them. On the bright side the ones I've ordered have races installed, so I can't fuck it up again...

  26. Well, at last I have a large grey pontiac in my garage. Still a couple things to paint like the skirts and the detail on the 'waterfall' trim that goes over the hood and trunk. Grill has been rechromed and will do the front bumper too plus a few randoms like indicators and tail lights, rear bumper is still pretty good. Have a bit of a list of stuff to do, now at that stage where I have to decide if I just want to get back on the road asap or drag it out doing more stuff. I'd like to do as much Dynamat as I can afford, at the very least in the doors/rear quarters. I had a felt kit and new rubbers for the front quarter windows to go in but this didn't happen when it was apart as I 'd hoped it might. Might be the time to pull doors apart and do this, and rechrome the quarter window frames as they're a bit rusty. Hmmm. Anyway, here's a couple of random pics. Since I have such a list of things to do it seemed logical to put the venetians in for a test fit! Priorities... Not 100% sure on them, think they'll work when more chrome is back on car. Currently look like too much of a feature. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53947-shifters-51-pontiac-chieftain-talky-stuff/

  27. Shithole eh. Embarrassed to show this, sort of a legacy of working on umpteen projects when time poor, and... just not putting shit away... (not proud) Spent most of Fri evening and all Sat tidying up, took a load of junk to the tip, a fish bin of extra tools to charity shop, made drill holders, bought an extra 3 drawer chest, stored stuff logically - and actually have a bench again... and used said bench to have a go at setting up the upper control arms. It was a bitch, had to try to screw pivot caps in without binding up the coarse threaded bush, while keeping it centred. Eventually managed it by screwing each side in a third of a turn at a time, and levering the bush through its range of movement to make sure it was moving ok. Got there in the end though, had to press these splined bolts in once happy with it, so no going back... Also got to use my new (to me) vintage vice, an old Record 75 engineers model I'm very pleased with, I'll restore it when I get a chance...

  28. There's a new Burgerfuel opening in Hamilton and we've been invited to head along and get free burgers! They will be having a cook off at the new store where all the staff practice cooking burgers and test the equipment before the actual opening date on the Monday following. The owner has extended a personal invite to oldschool.co.nz to come along and display our cars and enjoy free burgers. They'll also be bringing along their 1971 Ford Ranchero ute to display with our cars. The details are: Burgerfuel Rototuna Saturday 22 April from 11am until 1pm. FREE BURGERS There's also a possibility of moving our meets out to Rototuna, so we should head down there and scope it out. Who's keen?

  35. Won't need one if it was modified prior to the rules. If it was being certed today then it would, there has been more emphasis on it in the past couple of years due to a wof inspector being killed by a car that had no inhibitor switch or gear indicator, someone started it in gear and it squashed him.

  40. something i forgot to mention, while this is all going on we are living in the garage. i dont have any photos of that but its pretty cramped. i still needed to get a celica into the shed because its my daily and i need it. so i built a wall across at one celica depth in from the big door. the space we're living in is about 5.5 x 6. in one corner is a bathroom that is 2 x 2. so far its been fine. the rain on the roof has been so loud that we couldn't communicate verbally and it isn't winter yet so we'll see how that goes. all my crap, including lathe is in the celica end of the shed. ive built a bench which the nose of the celica fits under so i can still get it into the shed. 2017-04-02_04-55-31 by sheepers, on Flickr

  43. Mayte, I was on the fence until you mentioned free snags. Love 'em So for all those planning on attending I propose the following amendments: We travel from Auckland down to Hamilton on the 30th of April, attend Midnight Upholstery's Open Day, visit the Hamilton classic car 'Classics Museum' and the associated swap meet that will be occuring on its grounds. The classics Museum Swap Meet is a $5 entry per person but children under 15 or those who look younger than 15 like chees- are free. There is a wide range of food available including the Diner themed restaurant at the Classics Museum itself, a BBQ at Midnight upholstery which is less than five minutes away or a wide range of Waikato culinary delights including Waikato Draught, pies and McDonalds. And some decent food too puhuhu. Since the drive from Auckland to Hamilton is probably the shittiest drive in the country IMO, we could always meet at the Drury BP and take one of several alternative routes to Hamilton including: - Turning off SH1 at Pukekohe, cutting across through Tuakau and heading south through Pukekawa on SH22. Then heading East back to SH1 through Glen Murray along Glen Murray road. This road and the area south of Tuakau are good driving roads with a lovely bush scenery and plenty of hills, corners and straights. This route would see us rejoin SH1 at Rangiriri. - Turning off SH1 at Pokeno, heading South through Pukekawa on SH22 but continuing even further South through Naike, crossing the border into the Waikato shortly after and then turning East onto Hetherington road and joining SH1 back at Huntly - Turn off SH1 at Rangiriri, Head South through Rotongaro, Glen Afton and Glen Massey, thenheading into Hgaruawahia and on to Hamilton. Or feel free to suggest another route. There are roads to the East of SH1 but they aren't as entertaining or enjoyable to drive through as the ones on the West as suggested above. But I am open to feedback as it's all about what you guys and girls want. 44. had a busy week and weekend, got the first couple coats of red on the car.did the bottom and the inside and dash area, pretty pleased with it, did one coat on saturday, missed a couple spots, worst thing that happened was sweat running out of my glove on the wet paint, bugger it! gave it a wipe with thinners and it came really nice on the second coat today. Got a few small runs but stoked with it. not bad for a rookie!
