  2. Got the FJ20 mounted on the stand to clean it up and paint a few things. Tracked down a set of FJ into S12 mounts to borrow and copy, extremely rare it seems but should be easy enough to make. Also found a guy who has some powersteer and aircon brackets, hopefully get them soon!

  3. I've been doing a few things to get the car running again. the wiring loom is hilarious in its fuckedness. Nick came over the other night and went through it and fixed a whole bunch of shit. there is still a bit to do to get the wiring sorted but its getting there, and its become apparent why it was difficult to get the starter to engage among other things. I'm going to hide most of the loom except for a small bit that goes under the radiator so its needs work anyway. so it now has brakes and a clutch again. I've attached a few bits and I've been cleaning and prepping other bits to go back on. oh, and Greg came over earlier tonight and fixed a couple of runs and polished them out. 2016-01-14_08-38-00 by sheepers, on Flickr

  4. So the other night Gal and I built this. We both found it to be hilarious. But I needed one of my own... Luckily this cropped up on TM with giant 32" wheels. So I brought it, and made this! What a blast! @scooters

  7. Oh Boy I got plenty excited seeing the engine bay like this.... Its not nearly as close to going as first appearances suggest though. The banananana extractors and 48 Delortos are just sitting there. Spot the gaps. And a few minor details like the gearbox mount is now 25mm too far back behind the pinto perhaps making the driveshaft too long. It still looks the business though!

  9. I had been looking for a 4wd or a ute as I need something for moving my dogs and mountain bikes and general trailer pulling. I came across an XE ute on facebook for sale and commented on it, a mate saw my comment and gave me the number of a mate of his who had an XH XR6 that he wanted rid of. He had a work ute, so the xr6 hasn't seen any use for a couple of years and was too good to rot away in his driveway. So I bought it Its recently had a massive brake system overhaul as he was starting to get it WOF ready but didn't have the time to put into it. So it still needs a bit of work, new battery, wipers don't go, door hinge pins etc. I've got a new battery and hinge pin kit, have got an entire wiper assembly on the way from trademe. It runs really mint, its only done 150k. Hopefully I will be able to get a WOF on it pretty pronto once my wiper assy arrives next week.

  16. Left work early to cycle over to BNT to pick up the cylinders, no luck there, they were the wrong ones for manual adjusting brakes so I rushed home and worked some magic to just make it to VTNZ before 5... Pretty stoked to have the wof but still plenty of work to go, even though the brakes work i'll order in from Russia the correct cylinders just for piece of mind!

  19. so, usually I post up stuff when I thinks it's coming together well, but most of the time I've got no idea what I'm doing, like the last two days. start with this. I have not been looking forward to trying to seperate these. take a not quite as stuffed example. this panel was on the old baja I cut up, seems the short baja fibreglass bonnet needed some clearance. spot the diff this side is rough! started hammering it into shape. than I chopped this out, just past the old welds still trying to suss out the best way to stick it all back together. tried to save the dash side of the lip, but as you see.... so I guess I'll have to make a new one? I also sprayed some primer on the roof, for now, and cut out and patched the holes. trimmed the new panel up and had it blasted by the same crowd on henderson valley road. pulled the dash out, thought about cutting the lip off it as a doner. so now I've just got to make this all fit back together again. oh, and I welded up about 15 holes under the dash from radios and stuff over the years. was hoping to have this finished and back on the spit soon to finish up the sills. ah well!

  20. Been a long time coming but Mags is finally back on the road! Took her for a quick spin round the block. Running with a bit more grunt than before and the new clutch was definitely a good call. The overheating issue is probably the next focus - the gauge shows H pretty early on, although we don't really know how accurate this is. We recently chucked in a new temperature sender - does anyone know the normal resistance range on the temperature sender for these cars (i.e. normal running temp resistance)? Will probably look at getting a new radiator at some stage too as has a bit of wear and there's room for a larger one which will definitely help things. Probably should grab a wof + reg too lel.

  21. Getting closer to the wof, except the rear brakes. After failing I pulled them down and all looked happy, so guessed they still had a small amount of air I bled them and went for a re-check with little improvement. Returning home I had a read of the workshop manual which mentioned automatic adjusters on the shoes, from memory I saw no such thing, so back to pieces again and the auto adjusters were no where to be seen, bugger! Weighing up the options I looked at swapping the backing plates for niva ones with manual adjusters just to get through, while stripping one hub a new problem arose: At some stage in the past the 4 bolts that hold the hub to the axle have been replaced with bunning's specials and were all stripped, so down to edl before work to order some new 10.9s and thankfull I looked that deep (paranoid enough I even used a torque wrench!) After a few calls with gee motors it turns out the wheel cylinders are self adjusting and the end cause is the left rear is seized on one side, but just my luck they are out of stock, BNT may have one so fingers crossed the one they have in stock is auto adjusting and i'll be on back the road this weekend........... maybe!

  22. I was briefly on these forums years ago, when I had a 1977 KE35 SR but since then I have been living carless in London for the last 6 years, lurking about the forums to get my old car fix. I moved back at the start of the year, so it was time for a new old car. I got this Galant Colt GTO at the start of Feb in really good condition. It had a bit of a refresh in the 90s including respray in the original colour and the addition of louvers and a sunroof. It's my daily drive and I think that the sudden increase in usage was a bit of a shock to it's system and lots of bits and pieces that were close to giving up started to go. It was running quite hot and starting to leave a few oil drips on the driveway. So I had to sort a few seals (tailshaft, crankshaft, rocker cover gasket), a heater hose and add an electric fan. But of course fixing one thing leads to others crapping out so I then had to fix a small leak in the radiator and get the water pump reconditioned too. Also needed a new Alternator with external regulator so got that taken care of at the same time. Anyway, pics: Definitely needs more low and a few little bits and pieces like window seals could probably do with replacement but for now I'm just enjoying driving it.

  23. So, thought I better get myself a classic Japanese car awhile back, because new german daily driver cars are boring me lately. Was looking at old Toyotas and Datsuns etc but I decided it had to be a 70's or 80's 2 door coupe of some kind in the end. Pop up head lights would be a bonus. Got thinking about my S12 RX Silvia CA18ET notch back I owned back in the early noughties and thought hmm, that was a pretty cool, cheap fun car. Anyway started looking around in Australia and realised these things just are not about. Luckily I got a lead on a car that was not even advertised and found this : Original one lady owner Nissan Gazelle S12 , The main reason I bought this particular one, other than the fact its so clean is because it has a R180 IRS disk brake rear end and they are quite rare here, most of these sold new in Australia came with drum brake live axle rear set ups and I was not too keen on that. It has factory AC that still works, power steer etc. Really original car, factory head unit still fitted and all that stuff! Pretty hard to find in this kind of condition these days, I mean it is 30 years old! When I got it, seat covers and window shades had been fitted its whole life until now, so the interior has survived really well. Only downside to the whole deal is that its a CA20E. Automatic. Yuck I know. But at least it's been cared for and never thrashed. The Automatic can jog on though, I plan a manual conversion very shortly.

  35. The height adjust screw for one of the headlights was bung so while I had the grille and everything off I took the opportunity to make it all nice and clean and black. Before: After: Much better. the headlights have always been a tiny bit on the piss — the lines are not quite vertical/horizontal. They can't be rotated though because there are little tabs on the back of the bulbs which correspond to slots in the headlight cups. Am I missing something? Discuss here if you have any ideas. Cheers

  36. my brake bits have been dribbling in from around the world, and i can now assemble the front brake calipers. Calipers are cast with FIAT/Girling and are also used on Dinos and Panteras and some other super expensive and rare cars, but also including (thankfully) old volvos (amazons and P1800s), which have a large aftermarket suppy, so are also avalaible new, all from Skandix.de (reccomended) Gulp. pads are fairly easy to come by, as used on only the finest british tat, these were only $9 on rock auto New cylinders in - fitting the rubbers is a bit of a trick! Read to bolt back on with new soft lines Just waiting on an ebay purchase for the rear cylinders, and some handbrake hardware and the rears will get the same treatment (will see about the rear pads being reshoed at a later date) and once installed i can drive it out and turn it around to get at the drivers side rust - untill then ive kinda run out of things to do.

  37. Came back from summer break to find this in the lounge: Inside is all thats needed before I can head for a wof, seatbelts, ball joints, indicator lenses and a few other cosmetic bits and pieces, wasting no time I began to fit and cross items off the list, first of all, the drive donut: Amazed at how mangled these things can get and offer no sign of damage! all was going well til this In my order frenzy I forgot that Ukraine is LHD, so my new fancy wiper arms are upside down, any Ideas on how to fix these? pulling them apart doesn't look possible from the crimping, possibly heat and bend but then will I be able to patch up the powdercoat to look as pretty as they are now? And the reason for the odd shaped package: for 20usd I couldn't resist some aero, it fits terribly, the finish is horrible, but I have some chop strand in the shed and pretty sure the bogan points can be saved! And on the positive side I went for a wof today, even with 4 inspectors crawling over the car the to do list was very minor, rear brake imbalance, high beam warning lamp bulb blown, sway bar not fitted (opps! my bad forgetting to put that back on!) and what would appear to be a typo in the vin number, looks like somewhere in the system a 7 got confused with a 2 and so I need to call ltsa to sort that out, unless someone has done an epic job of converting a Lada Discussion for tips on wipers : //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49397-nickjs-1989-lada-2105/?hl=2105

  40. Bled the clutch up, took a day to gravity feed the lines full again. Also faffed around for aaaaaaaaages getting the gear linakges connected including cutting and bending them so the dont bind on themselves (both sets i have, have witness marks so it cant just be me!). Parts car comes through with the goods again, with a radiator. Its not perfect but at least the bottom tank is whole. Polished the top which is so shiny its blown out this piccy Also got a lace up steering wheel cover for christmas Started swapping over the column switches, they are a weak design and the levers break out at the base - 65Fiat kindly let me have one of his spares. - the eboxy glue doesnt stick very well and it catches on the wheel, so may try fibreglass (PE) or making a metal ring of sorts like the later model ones have to spread the load better around the switch im gonna need to replicate that somehow - Anyway, set the timing, filled the carbs with some go juice and put the exhaust back on (well just to the 2 into 1 section by the gbox ): Pretty close to driving this out of the garage under its own steam! Wont be going far till i get the break calipers re-sealed tho.

  41. today i took the motor out and in traditional OS tradition here is a picture of me playing actual guitar in the hole. you probably can't tell but I'm playing a fine rendition of the sound of silence. 2015-12-24_04-25-34 by sheepers, on Flickr 2015-12-24_04-08-58 by sheepers, on Flickr so, onward. whats wrongs with this picture?? 2015-12-24_02-54-59 by sheepers, on Flickr thats right keen eyed reader! the pipey bits should line up with the slots in the fire wall, but they don't. id been intrigued by this oddity for some time and today after i got the motor out i decided it was time to investigate. i have no fucking clue how this was assembled in this way, i could not get it out without breaking the housing. its the wrong heater core but i suppose that much was obvious. there just was no way of getting it out without breaking it. so i broke it. 2015-12-24_03-02-46 by sheepers, on Flickr whatchaaaa gonna do now? well, tomorrow is Christmas day so ill probably take tomorrow off. boxing day however is prep engine bay day.

  43. Aaand today, a bit more progress on the rust, BEGONE! BAM! I actually did cut and weld that but forget to take any more picks till I'd finished So thats the whole passenger side done as far as rust/metal work goes. *** Thought i would pull the clutch master from the spares car to see if i could cannibalise any bits from it to take to the brake shop with the calipers - it wasnt looking good in the car all oxidised and rustly looking but once i got it off : KAPOW! Oh yeah! It has previously/recently been resleeved with a nice brass sleeve and was not even seized at all The parts car has just paid for itself twice over, and after a clean and reassesmble, the pedal box is all completed. Car is also on the ground and awaiting some more weight in the front. Im just waiting on some o-rings (or valve stem 'seals') to reassemble the head and put it on the block before i lift it back in.

  44. I may or may not have had a massive sulk at the car for 6 months, I couldn't figure out why it was running lean and I'd had enough of it. Plus I was busy with house stuff, so it basically didn't get touched until a couple of months ago. I started by sorting out the ugly patch on the drivers B pillar (no pictures of that), it's now all painted up and looking good. I was talking to a mate (Pete at Mullins Tyres in Avondale, awesome guy to deal with), and he really made me face palm. When the last owner plumbed up the fuel lines he never installed a breather, so the tank has been vacuuming up. I was pretty embarrassed that I'd never thought to check it, but at least it was easy to sort out. Drilled a hole in the fuel cap and away we go. Pulled the car out of the garage for the first time since January on Sunday, sprayed it with the hose and put it away. Next up is getting the driveshaft checked out, then another wheel alignment (5th in 100kms.....), then cert again.

  45. Lots of little bits and pieces lately, been collecting parts: some spare chrome trims, a couple of interior pieces and some badges – a rechromed boot badge and a NOS rear quarter badge. Also got some nice new black carpet. The carpets aren't moulded, they're all just shaped flat panels, like lots of mats, so it was easy to cut new pieces and get them all edged. I'll get some pics when the new carpet is in. More excitingly, I decided on a fairly extreme fix for the little tears that were starting on the base panel of my driver's seat. The metallic green colour was going to be pretty impossible to match, so I got a set of slightly tatty seats from a Colt GSR, sporting several shades of green and got them recovered by Greg (64valiant) at Midnight Upholstery. Super recommended, they came out great, can't wait to get them into the car. Before: And after: Decided to try something a little different with the back panels, I think they came out pretty cool. Greg was super easy to work with, real nice guy and the quality of the job done is excellent, definitely check him out for any upholstery stuff you need.
