Ive just been fixing up an old 60's Suzuki Ma50 for my mate, everything is going smoothley, and im at the point where i need to sort out the ignition.

ive never done this before and would like to know the basics of wiring up the points to get spark. at this stage i couldnt care less about lights and such.

i found this but im not sure if its relevant, its from a jawa forum.

also labelling wires by colour is no use to me, so what are the red and green wires?? aside from, red and green trololol

I don't really think you can rely on colours cross models let alone cross brands...

Exactly?? is that not what i said?. im sure that regardless of colour the wires should be fairly similar on every bike. im just not sure on what ones do what.

I have no idea how the electrics on your suzuki are set up, I only have experience with vespas and an old puch.

I'm assuming you have a stator plate with several coils on it.

First you need to figure out which coil is for the ignition.
On the stators I've seen the ignition one looks a bit different, and the other coils have been wired in series to multiply the voltage.

One side of the coil normally connects to the chassis as an earth.
One side of the ignition coil (-ve) also connects to earth.

The other side of the coil goes first to the points.
After the points, there is a condenser connecting to earth.
Then the wire goes to the +ve terminal of the coil.

The kill switch just connects between the two ends of this coil to short it out.

Arrange the stator so the points open just before tdc and you've got a good start.

Hope this helps.
