BURGERFUEL MEET - MAY 2011

Hi Guys. I thought I would finally get round to taking my camera to one to the monthly burgerfuel meets so you can all see what you are missing.

It is a wicked night out so any of you OS guys in Auckland make sure you come along.

Here are the pictures. It was my first time shooting night photos so I hope they came out okay and if they suck then I'm sorry, I will try better next time. Let me know what you think of the photos.

Yes it was very dark. I had to use a very slow shutter speed to be able to capture enough light. I forced my ISO down to 400 so some of them are up to 10 seconds exposure time. With some of the other photos I cheated abit and they are actually composite shots made up of one shot with no flash and a 2nd shot using the flash set to 2nd curtain sync.

That way I could get plenty of background light before the flash went off at lit up the car itself. then I could blend the 2 photos together to balance the harsh light and shadows of the flash shot with with the more subtle long exposure shot. I am pretty happy with how they came out in the end. I was really unsure about how they would turn out on the night because I have never experimented with night shots before. I learnt heaps while taking the photos so I will give it a go again sometime and see if I can get some better shots.

Yeah I like the shots of your tail lights. I didn't have my tripod setup when you guys were leaving but luckily I had my 50mm f/1.8 lens on so I could shoot it hand held with a fast shutter speed of 1/25 of a second. looks pretty cool with the mood lighting of your taillights and headlights.

nice work with the camera.
it was very dark. and the lights in the carpark were off.
most of those shots look like they where taken at sunset.
it also highlights the fact that my car needs to be lowered.

Thanks.

Although it was very dark there is one benefit of shooting in Auckland and that is that there is a lot of light pollution so that allows me to get that "sunset" look even though it appears pitch black to the naked eye. and actually having the carpark lights off made it better for bringing out the ambiant light in the backgrounds.

Yes unfortunately with using the flash it does light up the inside of the wheel arches making the car look higher than it is. on the nonflash photos they were just completely black so you can't see how high the car is. I was going to darken that area inside the wheel arch but I didn't get round to it.

Thanks.

I redid the Cortina. this time as a composite image and tweaked the white balance and colours. I think it looks better.

Very cool man, well done.

I don't know too much on the technical aspect of photography, so can't really critique them, but I do think they look pretty.

Thanks Fred!

It wasn't the same without you though. No skids or tinkering with ECU's of any kind.

I blame pisser/urinate, he's responsible for skids, in my absence, he even thinks he's better at them :-)

Hopefully some of the OSers will do some ECU tinkering before I next attend one of these. Fingers crossed.

Fred.

Thats weird cos i had my laptop on me. who at the meet knows how to program cold start into a G4?
I'll do a skid once my car has been on the dyno.

Tuning cold start well is a process that takes multiple days due to having to let the engine fully cool to reach the lowest parts of the curve, or whatever they offer. I seemed to guess mine pretty well with a single attempt, though, so anything is possible :-)
