Aha! A discussion thread!

I've found in the past when i've painted stuff that if i get a rough surface i can usually coloursand/polish it up pretty good. try rubbing down a bit between coats and then put a couple of steady clearcoats on the top and cut them back with fine grade sandpaper then buff out. Any good to you? This worked very well with the metalflake i put on my daily, its was very bumpy with the flakes so i put loads of clear on and cut it back to smooth - i even polished it by hand and it still came out good

Any word on your bits yet?

What paint type are you using? If its an enamel it should come up nice and glossy straight away and you can't touch it with sand paper for a good few weeks as far as I know. It takes a while to harden.

Sweet, I haven't had much experience with painting myself but I've seen a couple of cars fresh out of the booth with a paint type like that and they do look dull until buffed

if the finish is dusty looking try getting a little close when spraying and going a little slower

if its just slightly satin looking like this

then its proably just a base coat and would need a clear coat on top

took me that long to type that youve already beaten me to what type of paint it is

just go a bit slower get the paint looking nice and wet when you spray it

acrylic lacquer, best give it a week otherwise your polishing efforts will be wasted, the solvents that are still in the paint will 'dry' the surface out as the evaporate making it go dull again

leave it outside in the sun a few times to speed it up

you can polish it now if you just want to see results, but when you get round to the final paint job leave it as long as you can bare too
same as the primer, give it plenty of time do cure before painting
