Popular Post danger
Picked this up today. Got it for a song, pretty stoked. Feels awesome to ride again, especially with my feet up compared to sport style bikes in my past. Its a roadster XLS which is basically a sportster with a bigger tank, this bike seems to have been fitted with a Dyna tank and rear guard though which the seat doesn't really fit. Super chromed out including swingarm etc. Its an old soldier but it's had a fair bit of money spent on it. New tyres, wheel bearings, brakes and clutch. Even has a WOF. Biggest let down is probably the rusty front wheel, other than that she's pretty tidy all around. Performance wise it's nothing flash but it starts easy and gets along quick enough. Gonna do maintenance work and maybe lower the rear at this point. Will probably paint it black as I've always owned black bikes. But really I just wanna ride the thing. Here it is in my 3 bedroom garage Chur,
Duke Blackwood
My uncle has a soft tail custom of the same vintage with the same paint job, cool bike man!
danger
Clocked up a casual 200kms this arvo after giving it new engine and trans oil. Set the tappets too, these things are so awesomely simple to work on. Took the exhaust shields off as they were a bit rattley and theres already too much chrome. Keen for some forward controls and maybe some bigger cams next
Chris.QCR
Awesome mate ! What oil you running ? Mine has a separate oil tank .
danger
Just some 20w/50 GTX and I used harley primary and trans oil in the trans with a new oil filter from HD. The engine took like 4L which surprised me a bit. Found out my year has an electronic ignition too which is a bonus. From what I've read, 80-85 Ironheads run EPA friendly detuned "Q" cams. The older style "P" cams are a straight swap and make a ton more power. Haven't really pushed it over 80MPH so far. Just cruised. I have some shorter evo rear shocks on the way to drop the back a little. May change the top shock mount to fit the mounting hole on the chrome on the rear fender too. Chris.QCR
Sweet ! Costly for the filter and trans oil ? I need to do mine . Also where you get Evo shocks from and how long are they ? $? Are we locking in riding to hanmer ?
danger
Nah went through the local HD Dealer. I think the oil was $16 for a quart which is plenty and the filter was $20. Got the evo shocks off trademe for $200, think they're 11 inch. Hanmer would be sweet. Will see what the weather thinks about it closer to the time

danger
After getting grumpy at the lack of choke on carb I just ordered one of these. Supposed to be pretty good. http://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/p2876/buy/m-c-parts/carb-amp-fuel/harley-davidson/carburetors/sudco-international-mikuni-vm38-carburetor-kit-for-pre-85-xl-sportster-amp-shovelheads/ Guess cams will have to wait. Rookie
Swing arms are for girls Chris, you know this....
danger
Hardtail looks sweet but dunno if would suit my bike with the big tank and all the chrome. Plus would mean making/buying a new oil tank and seat etc Got offered a custom softail frame set up for a new twincam dirty, dirty cheap which has me thinking. Would be sweet with a crashed donor bike from turners or something.

danger
Might look into welding a softail rear end on. That said I'm still keen to see how it looks when I put lower shocks in the rear. May cut the springs haha Edit: Faaark, the more I look at the pic of it in my kitchen, the more I think the most badass thing to do would be to get a non-chrome swingarm and lengthen it an inch or so. Would effectively lower the rear and get the wheel sitting in the big twin guard better.
danger
More slam Pretty stiff in the rear now but I prefer that. I had the shocks preloaded right up before or it felt too floaty
